Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare malignant plasma cell tumour. We report an extremely aggressive case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the right maxillary sinus, which had metastasised to the brain and rib. A 56-year-old man presented with recurrent epistaxis and acute anaemia. Nasendoscopy revealed a medialised medial wall of the right maxilla and a mass occupying the whole nasopharynx. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right maxillary tumour with extension to the ipsilateral nasal cavity, nasopharynx, right sphenoid and ethmoidal sinuses. There was an extra-axial brain metastasis.

We report the case of a 44-year-old man who presented with a chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) of the sphenoid sinus, which filled the sinus and clinically and radiologically resembled a mucocele. Chondromyxoid fibromas are the least common cartilaginous neoplasms of bone, typically occurring in the metaphysis of long bones. They have occasionally been described in the facial bones, usually the mandible and maxilla, and rarely involve the paranasal sinuses. Chondromyxoid fibroma displays a relatively unique histological appearance, with characteristic lobulation, with spindle to stellate cells embed

Fifty-one patients suffering from inverted papillomas of the nose and paranasal sinuses were reexamined in a retrospective study. Thirty-five had undergone surgery by an intranasal endoscopic approach and 16 had undergone surgery by an extranasal approach. The recurrence rate following endoscopic interventions was 17% (6/35), as compared to 19% (3/16) after extranasal operations. Endoscopic surgery proved to be successful even in the treatment of large lesions affecting the posterior ethmoidal sinus, the nasofrontal duct, or the sphenoidal sinus. Its indication thus no longer needs to be restr

Benign sinonasal masses and slow-growing neoplasms tend to remodel the nasal vault and facial bones, and this is particularly true of nasal polyps and inverted papillomas. However, when such benign masses press against the floor of the anterior cranial fossa and the walls of the sphenoid sinuses, simulated aggressive bone destruction rather than bone remodeling usually occurs. This type of bone destruction implies to the radiologist that a carcinoma may also be present, and this information could dissuade a surgeon from operating with an attempt at cure. In fact, about 90% of the time with inv

The therapy records of 66 patients with carcinomas of the paranasal sinuses were reviewed; primary carcinomas occurred in the maxillary sinus in 50 patients, the ethmoid sinus in 11 patients, the sphenoid sinus in 4 patients and the frontal sinus in 1 patient. The tumors of the maxillary sinus were staged retrospectively according to the American Joint Committee staging system recommended in 1976; 1 of 2 patients with T1, 5 of 11 patients with T2, 10 of 34 patients with T3 and 1 of 3 patients with T4 lesions showed no evidence of disease (NED) at 3 years. Neuroendocrine tumors of the nasal cavity are rare in both animals and humans. This report describes the macroscopic, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a neuroendocrine tumor in a three-year-old female roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) that was shot due to a facial deformity caused by an oval, firm, exophytic lesion effacing the left frontal and parietal regions. Longitudinal sectioning of the skull revealed a nasal cavity tumor that had invaded the cribriform plate, the rostral bones of the skull, the rostral aspect of the cranial cavity and the frontal sinuses and ext

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the imaging characteristics of the tumor, emphasizing its location, and to determine the frequency of typical and atypical locations of olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of patients with pathologically proven ONB between April 2000 and April 2023. Demographic information, chief complaints, tumor location, and tumor extension were extracted.
RESULTS: Of the 58 patients, 50 (86.2%) had the epicenter of the mass at the superior part of the nasal cavity, while e

Total aplasia of paranasal sinus (TAPS) is extremely rare, although the fact that partial aplasia is very common. TAPS seems to be limited to only 5 case reports in the literature until now. We present the case of a 29-year-old patient who has a syndromic face appearance but whose TAPS was detected incidentally. The maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses were totally aplastic. Furthermore, clinodactyly and high-arched palate were observed. The patient's appearance was consistent with a syndromic face because of some findings on inspection such as hypertelorism, shortening of the pal

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare mesenchymal tumors initially described in the lung. About half of them exhibit expression of the ALK1 protein, generally resulting from a gene rearrangement. Paranasal sinus IMTs are extremely uncommon, and gene rearrangement of ALK1 is very rare in this localization. A 47-year-old woman presented with rapidly progressive vision loss in her left eye. Clinical and imaging work-up revealed a tumor invading the left ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses and extending into the nasal cavity, the orbit and the skull base. Complete tumor resection was pe

Schizophillum commune (S. commune) is a rare type of basidiomycetous fungus that has being reported as a cause of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS), invasive type of fungal sinusitis and allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM). However, it is believed that S. commune was often misdiagnosed to Aspergillus sp. We report a case of bilateral nasal polyps and maxillary, ethmoidal and sphenoidal involvement within the context of S. commune and Aspergillus niger associated AFRS. Our patient was suffering from a chronic disease with periods of remission and exacerbation and was treated successful

Malignant schwannomas are rare tumours that seldom grow in the head and neck and their occurrence is even rarer in patients not affected by neurofibromatosis. The authors report a 40 year old woman with a left trigeminal malignant schwannoma (arising from V2), involving the infratemporal fossa and subsequently extending into the maxillary, sphenoid and ethmoidal sinuses, the orbit, and the intracranial compartment. Given the complex location of this tumour, the patient initially underwent radiation treatment; however due to a poor response to this form of treatment as well as disease progressi

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign sinonasal tumor characterized by a potentially invasive nature. The lateral nasal wall represents the most common site of origin, whereas paranasal sinuses are frequently involved by extension. In contrast, primary sinus inverted papillomas have rarely been reported. The present study describes a 52-year-old man that presented with a one-year history of unilateral nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, epistaxis, occipital headache and decreased sense of smell. After nasal endoscopic examination, computed tomography was taken and endoscopic biopsy was performed

Fifteen patients suffering from visual disturbance of varying degrees caused by a mucocele of the posterior ethmoid and/or sphenoid sinuses underwent marsupialization of a mucocele into the nasal cavity. Five of the eight patients with severe visual loss worse than 20/200 showed recovery of measurable vision. Two of these five were operated on within 24 hours after the onset of visual loss and showed marked recovery to 20/25 and 20/15. The other seven patients who had relatively mild visual disturbance experienced improvement of visual acuity or remission of subjective complaints such as blurr

A case of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) occurred in a 60-year-old woman who had a disturbance of right eye movement and visual acuity. She was born and lived in southwest Japan, an endemic area of ATLL. Rhinoscopic and roentgenologic examinations revealed a mass in the ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses. Histologic examination showed a diffuse lymphoma (a medium cell type with T-cell properties). The ATL (adult T-cell leukemia) cells (abnormal multi-lobed lymphocytes) were found in the peripheral blood. Human T-cell leukemia virus type I antibody was found to be 320 times positive. Based

We report a case of an asymptomatic posttraumatic aneurysm of the internal carotid artery presenting in the sphenoidal and ethmoidal sinuses. Our initial clinical and radiographic diagnosis indicated a mucocele. There were two reasons for this. First, Maurer's triad of traumatic internal carotid aneurysm was not seen, since neither epistaxis nor visual disorder was present, and fracture was not evident on tomography or computed tomographic scans. Second, no symptoms or abnormalities were found in the sequential neurosurgical evaluations for a period of about six years after the head trauma. Th

The purpose of this article is to describe a chronic variant of invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) and discuss its management. This is a retrospective review of two cases of IFS that were characterized by atypical clinical courses. Patient 1 was a 75-year-old man with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus who came to us with a 5-month history of headache. Computed tomography detected an opacified left sphenoid sinus. After the man failed to respond to medical therapy, he underwent a left endoscopic sphenoidotomy. Pathologic examination revealed that septate, branching fungal hyphae had invaded t

OBJECTIVE: Ciliary-beat frequency (CBF) is an important factor influencing mucociliary flow in the respiratory tract. A significant correlation exists between CBF and mucus transport time (MTT), which suggests that CBF is the main factor in nasal mucociliary clearance in healthy individuals. Mucociliary clearance is influenced by the temperature of the inspired air and decreases at temperatures below 33 degrees C. It is unknown whether CBF varies in different sites within the nasal chamber and exactly how CBF is altered in disease states such as chronic sinusitis (CS) and nasal polyposis (NP).

Ectopic pituitary adenomas are exceedingly rare entities that are often misdiagnosed. The resulting delay in diagnosis may be particularly concerning in the case of Cushing syndrome caused by an ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenoma. Although the total resection of ectopic adenomas results in rapid and durable remission, persistent Cushing syndrome is often associated with permanently damaging invasive procedures and significantly higher risk of mortality. The authors report the case of a 48-year-old man with ACTH-dependent Cushing syndrome. On the morning befo
