Pathologic Rupture of the Spleen in Mantle-Cell-Type Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) accounts for less than 10 percent of all non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Pathologic or spontaneous rupture of the spleen has been reported in patients with lymphoma; however only 5 cases have been reported in patients with MCL. Although splenomegaly occurs frequently in patients with MCL, spontaneous splenic rupture is rare. We present a case of a 51-year-old female with MCL, who presented to the medical emergency room with splenic rupture. This case illustrates that clinicians should be aware of the incidence and presentation of patients with MCL and spontaneous splen…

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a rare cause of spontaneous rupture of the spleen.

INTRODUCTION: Spleen Spontaneous Rupture SRS is a rare phenomenon in which the spleen ruptures without associated trauma. This pathology is … scribed by Rokitansky in 1861 and mentioned in many cases since, the common causes of non-traumatic Splenic rupture include myeloproliferative diseases, vasculitis, and infections. However, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) remains an obscure cause of splenic rupture that requires unique attention. The diagnosis of splenic rupture should be considered in all pat …

Refractory splenic bleeding from splenic angiosarcoma: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is a rare state that accounts for only <1 % of splenic ruptures. One of the causes of ASR is splenic neoplasm such as angiosarcoma. The treatment strategy for ASR is still unclear given the small number of cases reported in detail. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain with shock was referred to our hospital. Emergency computed tomography revealed splenic rupture, and hemodynamic stabilization was obtained by emergent vascular embolization. Rebleeding occurred 27 days after the initial treatment, and…

[Rare cause of spontaneous spleen bleeding: a case report and literature review].

Rupture of the spleen is a serious medical condition manifesting as a sudden abdominal event, potentially life-threatening. Spontaneous spleen rupture is a rare condition. Atraumatic rupture of the spleen is a very unlikely condition. Risk factors include splenomegaly, hemato-oncological diseases, and infections, such as malaria or infectious mononucleosis. Extremely rare is splenic rupture described in autoimmune disease or vasculitis. There has been no reported case of spontaneous splenic rupture as a first manifestation of Churg- Strauss syndrome so far.

Splenic complications in malaria: report of two cases from Turkey.

Malaria is still a major health problem in Turkey, where Plasmodium vivax malaria is endemic. Spontaneous rupture of the spleen is an important and life-threatening complication and occurs in up to an estimated 2 % of cases. Hence the small number of case reports suggests under-reporting or underdiagnosis. Review articles have reported only 18 malaria cases with spontaneous splenic rupture in the English language literature since 1960. Two cases of P. vivax malaria with splenic complications are reported here. One of them showed signs and symptoms of acute abdominal pain, then splenic rupture …

Giant splenic artery aneurysm: case report.

Splenic artery aneurysm is the third most common location of intra-abdominal aneurysms. Giant splenic artery aneurysm is rarely seen and is at a high risk of rupture. Location and size of the splenic artery aneurysm determine the likelihood of rupture. A case of giant splenic artery aneurysm in a 35-year-old woman is reported. She presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. She had splenomegaly and extrahepatic hepatic portal hypertension. Angiography confirmed a giant splenic artery aneurysm measuring 8 × 10 centimeters, located in middle and distal two-thirds of the splenic artery. Surgi

Splenic Complications of Babesia microti Infection in Humans: A Systematic Review.

Splenic complications of acute Babesia microti infection include splenomegaly, splenic infarct, and splenic rupture. These complications are relatively rarely reported, and the aim of this research was to synthetize data on this topic according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using the PubMed database. In this review, we find that unlike other severe complications of babesiosis, splenic infarct and rupture occur in younger and immunocompetent patients, and they do not correlate with parasitemia level. Furthermore, admission hemoglob…

Nescient Aetiology of Splenic Laceration - An Enigma Unveiled.

Malaria is a common endemic disease prevalent in developing countries like India that presents with wide spectrum of clinical symptoms and complications. Splenic rupture is an uncommon but life-threatening complication which can be either spontaneous or as a result of trauma. We present a case of 50-year-old man with left upper quadrant pain following a polytrauma. Based on the radiological evidence of laceration and rupture of markedly enlarged spleen, emergency splenectomy was performed. Postoperative haematological evaluation established the co-infection of Plasmodium falciparum and vivax w…

A case of a pregnant woman with a special splenic artery aneurysm.

Visceral artery aneurysm, especially splenic artery aneurysm, is rare and is usually associated with pregnancy. When such aneurysms rupture, they can be fatal, and they often require emergency surgery. This case report includes a review of the literature and describes a effective multidisciplinary approach to managing this type of aneurysm. We describe the treatment of a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm and the careful coordination of obstetric, vascular surgery, and intensive care teams. The uniqueness of this case arose from the metal embolization coil that was found to have fallen off from

[Rupture of the spleen. Clinicopathological correlations and diagnostic procedures].

Though rare, splenic rupture is the most common indication for splenectomy. In the vast majority of cases ruptures are clearly related to trauma (traumatic ruptures); in other cases there is a pre-existing disease affecting the spleen (pathologic ruptures); and in a minority of patients no obvious reason can be identified (spontaneous ruptures). In approximately 10% of cases an iatrogenic cause, in the broadest sense (including side effects of drugs), and relevant histological findings (approximately half of which will be unexpected) can be anticipated. Knowledge of pathophysiological aspects …

Splenosis of the Liver Capsule.

Splenosis, a form of ectopic splenic tissue, is generally caused by heterotopic autotransplantation of splenic tissues after traumatic splenic rupture or splenectomy. The implants are often localized intraperitoneally, mostly in the left upper quadrant and splenic region. Hepatic foci are seen only on rare occasions. The differential diagnosis of splenosis foci from malignant masses can be challenging by conventional imaging and lead to unnecessary invasive procedures. This manuscript presents radiological and scintigraphic images of splenosis foci located in the peritoneal cavity and liver ca…

[Spontaneous rupture of the spleen in infectious mononucleosis: case report and review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare but potentially fatal complication of infectious mononucleosis. Abdominal pain is uncommon in infectious mononucleosis, and splenic rupture should be strongly considered whenever abdominal pain occurs. The onset of pain may be insidious or abrupt. The pain is usually in the left upper quadrant. AIM: To indicate that infectious mononucleosis is not always the innocent kissing disease, but could be complicated with splenic rupture as a life-threathenig condition. CASE-REPORT: Our first case is described and a short literature review is provided.…

Infected splenic artery aneurysm with associated splenic abscess formation secondary to bacterial endocarditis: case report and review of the literature.

Infected aneurysms are rare and may present with rupture or sepsis. Surgical treatment is often required to prevent catastrophic sequelae. Bacterial endocarditis is one of the classic causes of infected aneurysm. We present a case of a 6.1-cm infected splenic artery aneurysm secondary to endocarditis. Surgical treatment consisted of aortic and mitral valve replacements, splenic artery aneurysm resection, and splenectomy. We reviewed five other reported infected splenic artery aneurysms in which documented ruptured had occurred in three patients. Because the rate of rupture in these patients ap

Spontaneous rupture of the spleen operated in gynecological unit mistaken for ruptured hemorrhagic ovarian cyst: total splenectomy.

Spontaneous splenic rupture is always neglected when consulting acute abdominal pains in gynecological emergencies. It constitutes about 1% of all splenic ruptures and can be managed by abstention, surgery or embolization. We present the case of a young lady who was diagnosed of spontaneous rupture during surgery that was mistaken for ruptured hemorrhagic ovarian cyst and finally treated by total splenectomy. The pre-operative work up was absolute for a rupturred hemorrhagic cyst and secondariy for a ruptured ectopic gestation.

Laparoscopic splenectomy for spontaneous rupture of the spleen.

Laparoscopic splenectomy is a gold standard for management of planned benign splenic pathologies. Spontaneous rupture of the spleen (SRS) leading to acute abdomen occurs in only 1% of all splenic ruptures. Laparoscopic splenectomy in traumatic and atraumatic rupture due to intra-splenic pathology is reported. We present the first reported case of laparoscopic splenectomy in a 23-year-old male who presented with hemoperitoneum due to idiopathic or SRS. The procedure was safely accomplished with slight modified technique and minimum usage of advanced gadgets.

[Spontaneous rupture of the spleen in chronic pancreatitis].

Excepting splenomegaly related to segmental portal hypertension, splenic complications observed during the course of chronic pancreatitis are uncommon. These may include splenic necrosis, intrasplenic pseudocysts and splenic rupture. Spontaneous rupture of the spleen is one of the least common events, a total of 29 cases being reported thus far. We present herein 4 new cases, and previously documented cases were reviewed. In our cases, the splenic rupture occurred in young male patients. This complication revealed the pancreatic disease in one case while in the others, it occurred on the avera…
