Four infants with hyperimmunoglobulinemia E presented with a persistent papulovesicular rash and eosinophilia. Serum IgE levels and specific anti-Staphylococcus aureus IgE antibodies were studied during the first year of life. Increased anti-S aureus IgE antibodies were an early indicator of the disease; they appeared as soon as 7 weeks of age in patient 1 and before 1 year of age for the other patients. These antibodies were detected before the development of deeper staphylococcal infections. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are important, as they may prevent long-term infectious complications.

Nowadays piercing has become one of the most popular fashionable and cultural customs and people of all ages are interested in this cosmetic procedure. One of the common sites of piercing is ears which, like any other piercing, can bring about many complications like infection, inflammation, allergic reaction, keloid formation, and traumatic tearing. In this paper, we report a case of perichondritis due to Staphylococcal secondary infection to a primary herpes zoster infection following ear piercing.

The authors report a case of legionnaires' disease with retractile late sequelae affecting the lingula and the dorsal segment of the culmen. They stress the need for appropriate and prolonged treatment because of the possible presence of intracellular Legionella pneumophila. The existence of an associated staphylococcal infection is also one of the hypotheses raised in explaining such sequelae.

Fluctuating lesions or furuncles of the scalp occur frequently in dermatological practice. This clinical condition is often caused by gram positive bacteria (e.g. staphylococcal or streptococcal skin infection) or fungal infection (e.g. Kerion celsi). However, a rare diagnosis such as myiasis might be considered, especially if a journey to an endemic area is reported. Herein, we present a case of furunculoid myiasis of the scalp and review the pathogenesis and therapeutic options to treat this condition.

To date, there has been little experience in using fosfomycin in children. However, its broad spectrum of action and excellent safety profile have renewed interest in this antibiotic, especially for treating infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria. The main indication for fosfomycin in pediatrics is currently community-acquired lower urinary tract infection. Given its good activity against bacteria, fosfomycin can also be useful in urinary infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing enterobacteria. Fosfomycin presents very good dissemination to tissues including bone and

Background: Staphylococcal infection is a common bacterial disease with common clinical features. Untreated infection, especially in immunosenescence cases, can affect other organs. This can lead to multiorgan dysfunction and cause increased morbidity and mortality. Unlike commonly presented features of pneumonia, dissemination of infection can pose diagnostic and therapeutic enigma. Therefore, any such presentation in common clinical practice can yield a conundrum of diagnoses. Case Report: A 69-year-old elderly male presented to the Emergency Department with acute onset encephalopathy. Histo

Staphylococcus aureus and other staphylococci cause severe human disease, and there are currently no vaccines available. We evaluated whether manganese transport protein C (MntC), which is conserved across the staphylococcal species group, could confer protection against S. aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. In vivo analysis of S. aureus MntC expression revealed that expression occurs very early during the infectious cycle. Active immunization with MntC was effective at reducing the bacterial load associated with S. aureus and S. epidermidis infection in an acute murine bacteremia model. A

Staphylococcus aureus is a commonly encountered pathogen in humans, and it has the potential to cause destructive and life-threatening conditions, including septic arthritis. The pathogenicity of staphylococci depends on the expression of virulence factors. Among these, staphylococcal cell-surface proteins with tissue-adhesive functions have been suggested to mediate the colonization of host tissues, a crucial step in the establishment of infection. We investigated the relative contribution of the fibronectin-binding proteins (FnBPs) and fibrinogen-binding clumping factors (Clfs) to staphyloco

An 8-year-old girl died of sepsis due to staphylococcal infection one year and 8 months after Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) revaccination. Two months after the vaccination in accordance with the school health program, she was hospitalized with a high fever, skin rash over the face and lower limbs, and leukopenia. Her clinical and laboratory pictures were not compatible with those of any established type of immunodeficiency. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for M. tuberculosis complex was positive for bone marrow, pleural fluid, and peripheral blood. The strain recovered from a mycobact

BACKGROUND Infection-related glomerulonephritis occurs when immune complexes formed in response to bacterial infection injure the glomerular basement membrane. Here, we describe a rare case of Staphylococcus-induced glomerulonephritis following burn injury. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old woman was admitted to the Emergency Department after sustaining multiple burns from boiling water. She had second-degree burns covering 19% of her total body surface area and received conservative treatment. On day 4, she developed a burn wound infection caused by methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus and P

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococci are among the list of problematic bacteria contributing to the global antibiotic resistance (ABR) crisis. Their ability to adopt the small colony variant (SCV) phenotype, induced by prolonged antibiotic chemotherapy, complicates staphylococcal infection control options. Novel and alternative approaches are needed to tackle staphylococcal infections and curb ABR. Manuka honey (MH), a non-antibiotic alternative is recognized for its unique antibacterial activity based on its methylglyoxal (MGO) component.
METHODS: In this study, MH (MGO 830+) was tested in combinatio…

This chapter reviews data on the treatment of infections caused by drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). This review covers findings reported in the English language medical literature up to January of 2013. Despite the emergence of resistant and multidrug-resistant S. aureus, we have seven effective drugs in clinical use for which little resistance has been observed: vancomycin, quinupristin-dalfopristin, linezolid, tigecycline, telavancin, ceftaroline, and daptomycin. However, vancomycin is less effective for infections with MRSA isolates

Staphylococcus aureus is a human pathogen that can cause a wide spectrum of diseases, including sepsis, pneumonia, arthritis, and endocarditis. Ineffective treatment of a number of staphylococcal infections with antibiotics is due to the development and spread of antibiotic-resistant strains following decades of antibiotic usage. This has generated renewed interest within the scientific community in alternative therapeutic agents, such as anti-S. aureus antibodies. Although the role of antibodies in the management of S. aureus diseases is controversial, the success of this pathogen in neutrali…

Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal of the human skin or nares and a pathogen that frequently causes skin and soft tissue infections as well as bacteremia and sepsis. Recent efforts in understanding the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis revealed key virulence strategies of S. aureus in host tissues: bacterial scavenging of iron, induction of coagulation pathways to promote staphylococcal agglutination in the vasculature, and suppression of innate and adaptive immune responses. Advances in all three areas have been explored for opportunities in vaccine design in an effort to identify the cr

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus in hospitalized patients during the early 1950s stimulated research designed to develop new antimicrobial agents that would combat the "golden plague." Vancomycin, produced by a microorganism found in a soil sample from the jungle trails of Borneo, was shown to have antistaphylococcal activity and to be relatively safe when administered to patients with staphylococcal infections. In a recent resurgence in the use of vancomycin, investigators have reported the value of this antibiotic in the treatment of staphlococcal infect…
