Does this Tweet make me look fat? A content analysis of weight stigma on Twitter.

PURPOSE: Weight stigma involves stereotyping individuals based on body size. Individuals with obesity face weight stigma in many areas of their lives, and consequences can include impairment of mental and physical health, relationships, and academic performance. Weight-stigmatizing messages are pervasive in mass media, but the degree and characteristics of its presence within new-media social environments remain comparatively unknown. METHODS: This study examined weight stigma on Twitter by coding Tweet content that included the word "fat" within a 4-h timeframe (N = 4596). Coding marked demo…

Gender awareness among medical students in a Swiss University.

BACKGROUND: Gender is an important social determinant, that influences healthcare. The lack of awareness on how gender influences health might lead to gender bias and can contribute to substandard patient care. Our objectives were to assess gender sensitivity and the presence of gender stereotypes among swiss medical students. METHODS: A validated scale (N-GAMS - Nijmegen Gender Awareness in Medicine Scale), with 3 subscores assessing gender sensitivity (GS) and gender stereotypes toward patients (GRIP) and doctors (GRID) (ranging from 1 to 5), was translated into French and was distributed t

Critiquing fetal alcohol syndrome health communication campaigns targeted to American Indians.

It is widely recognized American Indians and Alaska Natives have suffered from far worse health status than that of other Americans. Health communication campaigns directed to American Indians and Alaska Natives and their outcomes must be grounded in an understanding of the historical and ongoing marginalization and cultural dislocation of these groups. The authors draw upon the specific case of health communication campaigns to reduce cases of fetal alcohol syndrome among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Counteracting stereotyping of American Indians and alcohol consumption by mainstream …

Experiences of stigma in older adults living with HIV/AIDS: a mixed-methods analysis.

Older adults are increasingly becoming impacted by HIV disease, both as newly infected individuals and as long-term survivors of HIV/AIDS li … espond to the four categories constructed in the stigma instrument. Rejection, disclosure concerns, stereotyping, protective silence and feeling "other" were all common experiences of these individuals. HIV stigma should be routinely assessed when working with older, HIV infected clients and interventions should be tailored to the individual experiences of sti …

Revisiting "Excited Delirium": Does the Diagnosis Reflect and Promote Racial Bias?

INTRODUCTION: "Excited delirium" (ExD) is purported to represent a certain type of agitated state that can lead to unexpected death. The 2009 "White Paper Report on Excited Delirium Syndrome," authored by the American College of Emergency Medicine (ACEP) Excited Delirium Task Force, continues to play a pivotal role in defining ExD. Since that report was produced, there has been an increasing appreciation that the label has been applied more often to Black people. METHODS: Our aim was to analyze the language of the 2009 report, the role of potential stereotypes, and the mechanisms that may pot

Early release from prison in time of COVID-19: Determinants of unfavourable decisions towards Black prisoners.

On the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the overcrowding in prisons led to efforts to decarcerate in order to prevent and control outbreaks in prisons. This study analyses how public support for such exceptional measures are determined by cognitive and ideological factors known to create and maintain racial biases in the criminal system. Participants were asked to express their level of agreement with the early-release of hypothetical prisoners. Results showed participants to be less favourable to the early-release of Black compared to White prisoners, when they had committed a stereotypically

Boys' toys, girls' toys: An fMRI study of mothers' neural responses to children violating gender expectations.

This study examined 1) mothers' neural responses to pictures of boys and girls who confirmed or violated social expectations regarding toy preferences, and 2) whether neural sensitivity to targets that violated gendered expectations interacted with mothers' gender stereotypes. In an event-related fMRI experiment, 23 mothers of a 2-6 year-old child viewed and evaluated pictures of boys or girls with their favorite toy. Next, mothers gender stereotypes about children's toys and behavior, and internal motivation to behave without prejudice were assessed. Several neural processes were underlying p

Color associations among designers and non-designers for common warning and operation concepts.

This study examined color-concept associations among designers and non-designers with commonly used warning and operation concepts. This study required 199 designers and 175 non-designers to indicate their choice among nine colors to associate with each of the 38 concepts in a color-concept table. The results showed that the designers and non-designers had the same color associations and similar strengths of stereotypes for 17 concepts. The strongest color-concept stereotypes for both groups were red-danger, red-fire, and red-hot. However, the designers and non-designers had different color as

The effects of aerobic exercise on academic engagement in young children with autism spectrum disorder.

PURPOSE: To determine whether participation in aerobic exercise before classroom activities improves academic engagement and reduces stereotypic behaviors in young children with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: This study employed a within-subjects crossover design, using a treatment condition (aerobic exercise) and a control condition, across 4 classrooms. The treatment condition included 15 minutes of running/jogging followed by a classroom task. The control condition included a classroom task not preceded by exercise. The number of stereotypic behaviors, percentage of on-task behavior, a

Identifiability and self-presentation: computer-mediated communication and intergroup interaction.

This research investigated the intergroup properties of hostile 'flaming' behaviour in computer-mediated communication and how flaming language is affected by Internet identifiability, or identifiability by name and e-mail address/geographical location as is common to Internet communication. According to the Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects (SIDE; e.g. Reicher, Spears, & Postmes, 1995) there may be strategic reasons for identifiable groups members to act in a more group-normative manner in the presence of an audience, to gain acceptance from the in-group, to avoid punishment fr

Effects of SCH 32615, an enkephalinase inhibitor, on D-1 and D-2 dopamine receptor-mediated behaviors.

Striatal enkephalin-containing neurons receive dopaminergic inputs from the substantia nigra and project to the external segment of globus pallidus. These neurons express primarily dopamine (DA) D-2 receptors. Accordingly, stimulation of enkephalinergic transmission might be expected to influence mainly D-2 receptor agonist or antagonist effects on motor function. To test this hypothesis, the effects of SCH 32615, an enkephalinase inhibitor, on DA antagonist-induced catalepsy, DA D-1 agonist-induced non-stereotyped grooming, and DA D-2 agonist-induced stereotyped behavior were studied. The adm

The association between stigma consciousness and weight stigma, psychological well-being, positive body image, and eating behaviors.

Stigma consciousness refers to an individual difference in the extent to which members of stereotyped groups believe that their stereotyped status permeates interactions with out-group members. This investigation examined whether stigma consciousness contributed unique variance in predicting mental well-being, and eating and positive body image outcomes (i.e., depression, self-esteem, body appreciation, intuitive eating, emotional eating) after controlling for experienced weight stigma (EWS), including fat microaggressions (FM), and internalized weight bias (IWB). Study participants (N = 288)

Integrated analysis of IGHV rearrangements and cytogenetic abnormalities in a large chronic lymphocytic leukemia cohort (CLL-POL1).

The somatic hypermutation (SHM) status of immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable region gene (IGHV) is a well-established prognostic factor in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We analyzed clonotypic IGHV-IGHD-IGHJ rearrangements in 4,251 newly diagnosed CLL patients in Poland (CLL-POL1), representing the largest national cohort to date. In total, 4,328 productive rearrangements were evaluated, of which 93% represented single clonal rearrangements. Additionally, double productive clonal rearrangements were identified in 76 cases (1.8%), of which 27 (35.5%) displayed discordant IGHV SHM status.

Gender at first sight: ERP insights into automatic activation, semantic bias, and inclusive language dynamics in Spanish and Italian.

The aim of this study was to investigate the activation of grammatical gender and its modulation by semantic information, such as biological sex and associated stereotypes. Using a gender-priming paradigm we explored the presence and modulation of the gender-congruency effect (GCE) through behavioral and electrophysiological measures (e.g., N400 and P300) in Spanish native and Italian-Spanish bilingual speakers. Primes included nouns with biological gender (e.g., cocineros MAS - male cooks), arbitrary gender referring to inanimate entities (e.g., ventanas FEM - windows); these nouns could be a

Stigmatisation in medical encounters for patients with fibromyalgia: A focus group study.

BACKGROUND: People with the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia experience stigma relating to their condition, including in medical consultations. We aimed to understand how patients with fibromyalgia describe their experience of stigma in medical consultations, using a recently developed stereotypes-and-behaviours stigma framework, and to explore any aspects of stigma in consultations not encompassed by this framework. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative focus group study in partnership with a Pan-European patient advocacy group for people with chronic pain. We conducted six focus groups com

Effects of housing conditions on behaviors and biochemical parameters in juvenile cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

To investigate the effects of environmental enrichment on laboratory monkeys, we studied behavioral and physiological differences following changes in housing conditions. Ten male and female juvenile cynomolgus monkeys were first housed in pairs for 8 weeks after quarantine/acclimatization (singly housed) and subsequently housed alone for the next 8 weeks. Monkeys were subjected to evaluations of body weight gain, stereotypic or affiliative behaviors, cortisol, 4-ethylphenyl sulfate (4EPS) and catecholamine concentrations in biological samples, and blood chemistry tests under both housing cond

Systematic autistic-like behavioral phenotyping of 4 mouse strains using a novel wheel-running assay.

Three core symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders are stereotypic movements, resistance to change in routines and deficits in social interaction. In order to understand their neuronal mechanisms, there is a dire need for behavioral paradigms to assess those symptoms in rodents. Here we present a novel method which is based on positive reward in a customized wheel-running apparatus to assess these symptoms. As a proof of concept, 4 mouse strains were tested in the new behavioral paradigm; 2 control lines (C57BL/6 and ICR) and 2 mouse-models of autism (BTBR T+ tf/J and Nlgn3(tm1Sud)). We found
