Intraoperative suspension-recession technique for treatment of vertical strabismus in thyroid myopathy.

Ten patients underwent extraocular muscle surgery with an intraoperative suspension-recession technique for diplopia induced by vertical strabismus in thyroid myopathy. The average ratio of the reduction of vertical deviation to the amount of surgery was 1.8 degrees/mm (range, 1.0 degrees/mm-2.8 degrees/mm). Eight (80%) patients had single binocular vision restored in the primary position without prism or compensatory torticollis after surgery. One patient who showed evidence of abnormal thyroid function at surgery developed an overcorrection postoperatively.

Botulinum toxin chemodenervation in infants and children: an alternative to incisional strabismus surgery.

Eighty-two children aged 13 years or younger were given injections of botulinum toxin for horizontal strabismus. Improvement was achieved in all but one patient. Children younger than 1 year or older than 6 years of age received only topical drop anesthesia and no sedation. Young children generally required low-dose ketamine sedation. The technique typically undercorrects, so reinjection was necessary in 85% of the patients. There were no systemic complications. Side effects, lasting up to a few weeks, included transient ptosis and hypertropia caused by involvement of other extraocular muscles…

Surgical drape waste in pediatric ophthalmology: examining the sustainability of strabismus surgery.

BACKGROUND: In pediatric ophthalmology, routine use of adult-sized drapes creates preventable waste. The goal of this study was to quantify the environmental impact of draping in pediatric strabismus surgery. METHODS: This was an observational study of draping practices in pediatric strabismus surgeries conducted between October 1, 2024, and July 15, 2025, at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, a tertiary pediatric hospital. All strabismus surgeries conducted by 8 ophthalmologists during the study period were included. Drape usage and wastage were quantified. Patient height …

Global financing of strabismus surgery: a literature review supported by an international survey.

PURPOSE: Strabismus surgery is a well-established intervention with demonstrated functional and psychosocial benefits, supported by extensive clinical and economic literature. Despite this evidence, reimbursement policies remain highly heterogeneous worldwide, often influenced by the persistent ambiguity between functional and cosmetic indications. A comprehensive synthesis of existing cost data, combined with real-world reimbursement practices, is required to better understand barriers to equitable access to care. METHODS: We conducted a targeted literature review to identify published data …

Visually Guided Saccades in Amblyopia and Strabismus: The Roles of Sensory Deficits and Nystagmus.

PURPOSE: To determine how amblyopia subtype, visual acuity, stereoacuity, and nystagmus influence visually guided saccades across viewing conditions in subjects with amblyopia and strabismus. METHODS: Visually guided saccades were recorded using video‑oculography in controls, anisometropic amblyopia, strabismic amblyopia, and strabismus without amblyopia subjects under binocular and monocular viewing. Saccadic latency, gain, disconjugacy, movement strategies, and main sequence relationships were quantified. Linear mixed effects models assessed group and viewing condition effects, and χ2 tests…

The impact of surgical intervention on the psychosocial health and quality of life of children with strabismus.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the psychosocial health and quality of life of children with different types and prism diopters (Δ) of strabismus, and to observe the impact of surgery on the psychosocial health and quality of life of children with strabismus. METHODS: We use questionnaires to evaluate the scores of perceived discrimination (PD), social anxiety (SAD), self-esteem (S-E), and quality of life (QoL) of children. These indicators are compared between children with and without strabismus, as well as changes before and after strabismus surgery. RESULTS: 1. Children with strabismus had lower Q…

Is Conventional Horizontal Strabismus Surgery Still a Valid Option in High Myopia?

BACKGROUND: Surgical methods to join extraocular muscles are now often used to reduce the risk of scleral perforation in strabismus surgery, but published results indicate that the outcome is highly variable. We therefore wanted to assess whether conventional horizontal strabismus surgery is still a valid option in high myopia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients with high myopia, defined as a spherical equivalent of ≥ - 6.0 D in at least one eye, and who had undergone conventional horizontal strabismus surgery was performed. Exotropic angles were converted to posit…

Professional liability in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus: the next decade (2014-2023).

A comprehensive review of the initial 25-year experience of Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company claims in the field of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus was reported in 2015. The current report is a retrospective analysis of 28 new closed claims arising from 22 cases in the decade since that study. The frequency of claims declined during the study period, although claim severity continued to be high. Successes and new areas for risk management were identified. Ophthalmologists may use this information to supplement the findings of the prior study to improve quality of care for patients in…

The impact of the alternation status on the relationship between strabismus and dry eye disease.

Purpose: To evaluate the association between strabismus and dry eye disease (DED), with a particular focus on the effect of alternation status on DED. Methods: Eighty eyes of 40 patients with constant strabismus were evaluated in this prospective, cross-sectional study. DED was evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Schirmer I test, noninvasive tear breakup time (NITBUT), tear film breakup time (TBUT). NITBUT values, including first breakup time (first NITBUT) and average breakup time (average NITBUT), were automatically calculated using a Scheimpflug corneal topography devic…

Unveiling restrictive strabismus in a Complex presentation With residual esotropia - A case report.

IntroductionThe onset of ocular misalignment can be either congenital or acquired, with each type of strabismus exhibiting distinct clinical features that help differentiate it from others. In this case, we aim to discuss conditions that mimic restrictive strabismus and their management.Case descriptionA 14-year-old girl presented with a complaint of her left eye turning inward, which had been present since infancy. Clinical examination revealed bilateral medial rectus overaction. She had underwent surgery for a meningocele five years ago. The left eye examination: visual acuity was 2/60, ante…

Strabismus and nystagmus in oculocutaneous albinism: clinical perspectives, diagnosis, and role of neurotransmitters.

The rare recessive autosomal non-communicable disorder oculocutaneous albinism causes discoloration of the eye, hair, and skin. Oculocutaneous albinism is a hereditary group of disorders with sub-differential characteristics like reduction of pilar, cutaneous, and ocular pigmentation. Clinical characteristics and symptoms include strabismus, iris hypopigmentation, nystagmus, reduced visual acuity, foveal hypoplasia, refractive errors, photophobia, and colour-visual impairment. The associated genetic mutation results in the reduced activity of tyrosine activity required for the metabolism of me…

Strabismus as the Initial Manifestation of En Coup De Sabre in Adult Patients.

Patients with fronto-parietal linear scleroderma, also known as En Coup De Sabre (ECDS) may have multiple ocular manifestations. Few cases have been reported involving strabismus in ECDS, and a variety of mechanisms have been proposed. We present three cases of patients who developed progressive strabismus associated with ECDS. Each of these cases is believed to be caused by a different mechanism. Patients may also have systemic and neurologic involvement, necessitating neuroimaging and thorough evaluations by rheumatology and neurology.

Pilot Study Assessing the Effect of Exam Room Length on the Measurement of Strabismus.

PURPOSE: Our study aims to investigate the effect of decreasing distance from the patient to the fixation target on the measurement of strabismus with a known distance-near disparity. METHODS: Strabismus measurements were taken by one pediatric ophthalmologist at our standard distance of 18 feet and compared to those taken at 16, 14, 12, and 10 feet from the fixation target. A clinically meaningful difference was defined as >2.5 prism diopters (PD), since a difference of that magnitude may alter surgical planning. RESULTS: Thirty-nine subjects, including 22 exotropes and 17 esotropes, were i…
