INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric condition with a worldwide prevalence between 6% and 9%, and more common in the female than in the male sex. The aim of this paper is to review and comment on the different factors that might explain the discrepancies in the pharmacological management of women and men.
AREAS COVERED: The available literature shows that there exists a vulnerability of women to develop PTSD that may depend on neurobiological as well as environmental/cultural factors. These variables might influence the clinical picture, the outcome a

INTRODUCTION: Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) are increasingly recognized as a measure of surgical quality and long-term outcomes. There are few PRO data for patients undergoing emergency general surgery (EGS) procedures. Sudden illness and injury are associated with worse health-related quality of life, symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress. This study aimed to evaluate PRO and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in an EGS population.
METHODS: Patients who underwent an EGS operation and had quality improvement data available from Jan 2020 to Jan 2021 were eligible for incl

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a complex psychiatric condition arising from traumatic experiences, marked by abnormal fear memories. Despite women are twice as likely as men to develop PTSD, the biological mechanisms underlying this disparity remain inadequately explored, particularly in preclinical studies involving female subjects. Previous research shows that female rats exhibit active fear responses, while males display passive behaviors. Additionally, sex differences in ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) during fear conditioning have been observed, indicating varying emotional resp

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The current meta-analysis looks at the effect of ethnicity on the connection between 5-HTTLPR SNPs and PTSD patients in all published genetic association studies.
TECHNIQUES: In accordance with PRISMA principles, the literature was searched in PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. A consistent method was followed by two reviewers who independently chose publications for inclusion and extracted data. Using a random-effects model, a meta-analysis of the biallelic and triallelic studies was conducted in order to determine the pooled OR and the associated 95% CI. The impact es

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating chronic mental disorder that leads to reduced quality of life and increased economic burden. Observational studies have found an association between human blood metabolites and PTSD. Nonetheless, these studies have limitations and are subject to confounding factors as well as reverse causation. Herein, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach for the systematic analysis of the blood metabolites and PTSD causal link.
METHODS: Data for the human blood metabolome, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolome, and P

INTRODUCTION: U.S. military women were at risk of combat exposure and injury from asymmetric warfare during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Previous research has yielded mixed results when examining sex differences in PTSD following operational deployment. To date, no study has explored sex differences in PTSD after combat injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included U.S. military service men and women who experienced a combat injury in Iraq or Afghanistan (March 2003 to March 2013) and completed a Post-Deployment Health Assessment (PDHA) within 1 year of injury. Th

Background: A complex bidirectional relationship exists between sleep and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous research reporting a strong association between sleep and PTSD has largely examined older military veteran populations, with military-related confounders potentially magnifying this effect. Less is known whether this association remains strong in younger civilian adults. Objective: This study examined the relationship between sleep disturbances, PTSD symptoms and PTSD symptom clusters in a young adult population with mixed trauma histories, while investigating the role of se

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma often results in visible facial disfigurements and can lead to psychological complications such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, PTSD often remains unrecognized and un/undertreated. The goal of the current systematic review was to determine the incidence of PTSD after maxillofacial trauma, associated risk factors, assessment tools employed, and management.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases following PRISMA guidelines up to March 2024. Collected variables incl

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) stands as a pervasive psychiatric condition, exerting a profound impact on millions across the globe. Despite the availability of traditional therapeutic modalities, many individuals continue to grapple with suboptimal treatment outcomes, underscoring the urgent need for novel interventions. In recent years, stellate ganglion blocks (SGBs) have garnered attention as a promising avenue in the treatment landscape for PTSD, showcasing remarkable efficacy in ameliorating symptomatology and enhancing overall quality of life. This comprehensive review seeks to d

BACKGROUND: There is a scarcity of literature concerning individuals who have existing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and their outcomes after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This study compared outcomes in patients undergoing primary TKA who have a previous history of PTSD.
METHODS: An electronic health care database was used to identify patients diagnosed with PTSD undergoing TKA. Through 1:1 ratio propensity matching, these patients were matched with a cohort of non-PTSD (NPTSD) individuals. Postoperative parameters, including health care visits and prescriptions, were assess

BACKGROUND: Dissociative amnesia, a disorder characterized by impairments in multiple memory areas, is frequently associated with trauma. Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is marked by mood dysregulation, negative self-concept, and impaired interpersonal relationships, in addition to the classic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The relationship between CPTSD and dissociative amnesia, as well as whether CPTSD should be considered a dissociative subtype, remains uncertain in the literature. Individuals diagnosed with CPTSD tend to exhibit higher levels of dissociat

BACKGROUND: As a mental health issue, suicide is a growing global concern, with patients who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) being at particularly high risk. This study aimed to investigate whether the link between PTSD and suicidal ideation is mediated by trauma-related guilt.
METHODS: Data were obtained from Wave 1, Time 1 (November 2016), and Time 2 (March 2017) of the National Survey for Stress and Health (NSSH) in Japan. The NSSH is an online longitudinal survey conducted on Japan's national population aged 18 years and older. The cumulative response rate of the survey was 66.

People with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often report difficulty remembering information in their everyday lives. Recent findings suggest that such difficulties may be due to PTSD-related deficits in parsing ongoing activity into discrete events, a process called event segmentation. Here, we investigated the causal relationship between event segmentation and memory by cueing event boundaries and evaluating its effect on subsequent memory in people with PTSD. People with PTSD (n = 38) and trauma-matched controls (n = 36) watched and remembered videos of everyday activities that were ei

The neurophysiological mechanisms in the human amygdala that underlie post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remain poorly understood. In a first-of-its-kind pilot study, we recorded intracranial electroencephalographic data longitudinally (over one year) in two male individuals with amygdala electrodes implanted for the management of treatment-resistant PTSD (TR-PTSD) under clinical trial NCT04152993. To determine electrophysiological signatures related to emotionally aversive and clinically relevant states (trial primary endpoint), we characterized neural activity during unpleasant portions o

Background Self-stigmatization has an estimated prevalence of 41.2% among adults with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since the name PTSD was introduced, arguments have been made that the term "disorder" may discourage patients from revealing their condition and seeking care. We hypothesize that renaming PTSD to post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI) would reduce the stigma associated with PTSD and improve patients' likelihood of seeking medical help. Methods An anonymous online survey was distributed by the Stella Center (Chicago, IL) between August 2021 and August 2022 to 3000 adult part

The present review aimed to identify the means through which neurologic injury can predispose individuals to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In recent years, comprehensive studies have helped to clarify which structures in the central nervous system can lead to distinct PTSD symptoms-namely, dissociative reactions or flashbacks-when damaged. Our review narrowed its focus to three common neurologic injuries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and stroke. We found that in each of the three cases, individuals may be at an increased risk of developing PTSD symptoms
