Evaluation of 3D imaging.

Interactive computer-based simulation is gaining acceptance for craniofacial surgical planning. Subjective visualization without objective measurement capability, however, severely limits the value of simulation since spatial accuracy must be maintained. This study investigated the error sources involved in one method of surgical simulation evaluation. Linear and angular measurement errors were found to be within +/- 1 mm and 1 degree. Surface match of scanned objects was slightly less accurate, with errors up to 3 voxels and 4 degrees, and Boolean subtraction methods were 93 to 99% accurate.

Power Doppler--a new tool for transcranial duplex assessment of intracranial vasculature.

The present study was undertaken to assess the clinical use of power Doppler (PD) as a new tool for transcranial vessel imaging. Power Doppler displays the integrated power of the Doppler signal instead of the Doppler frequency shift used in the conventional color flow Doppler (CFD) technique. Twenty-one patients were evaluated who had intracranial malformations or arterial stenoses [4 middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenoses, 2 intracranial carotid stenoses, 7 arteriovenous malformations (AVM), 5 intracranial carotid aneurysms, 3 Moya-Moya syndromes]. The PD results were compared with those obta

[Duplex ultrasonography in the study of carotid and vertebral artery stenosis (comparison with intra-arterial digitalized subtraction angiography)].

A prospective comparison was completed between duplex sonography and intraarterial digitalized subtraction angiography of the carotid and vertebral arteries. The sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracy of the duplex ultrasound were evaluated. In 85 patients 169 sides were investigated. The vessels were divided into normal, 1-24%, 25-49%, 50-74%, 75-99% stenosis and occlusion categories. For stenoses of less than 50% in the proximal internal carotid artery, sensitivity and specificity were excellent (95 and 92%), for lesions causing more than 50% stenosis were 87 and 95%, respectively. Assessment of apical root resorption using digital reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the in vitro and in vivo accuracy of a mathematical computer-based reconstruction of two images that are not taken with the same recording geometry for the measurement of apical root resorption following orthodontic treatment. METHODS: A gold standard for root resorption in vitro was developed from 10 extracted upper central incisors using calipers. Radiographs made with five different projection angles were reconstructed mathematically by two observers. The calculated loss of length was compared with the gold standard. Eighty-two upper central incisors from 61 patients

Surgical Treatment of Voluminous Jaw Cysts with a Buccal Plate: A Study of 20 Clinical Cases.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to present, with a series of clinical cases, some advantages of a modified surgical technique using fixed bone flaps in an approach to voluminous maxillary or mandibular odontogenic cysts (excluding keratocysts) and highlight the positive impact on the healing of mucus and bone tissues. BACKGROUND: The surgical approach of the enucleation of voluminous maxillary cysts is generally realized with a subtractive osteoplasty. The major problem with this kind of procedure is frequent fibrous healing (or scar formation) of the cavity due to mucosal invagin

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension and CSF-Venous Fistulae: from Diagnostic Imaging to Interventional Management.

Over the past decade, major advances have transformed the understanding and management of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks leading to spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). Among the most impactful developments has been the identification and characterization of CSF-venous fistulae (CVF), a distinct and still underrecognized cause of SIH. This discovery has prompted a paradigm shift in both diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Novel imaging techniques-including lateral decubitus CT myelography and digital subtraction myelography-have markedly improved detection rates, while targeted inte

From Looking at the Floor to Looking Forward: A Case of Hyperkyphotic Spine in an Ankylosing Spondylitis Patient.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by progressive spinal stiffness and deformity, primarily affecting the sacroiliac joints, spine, and pelvis. In advanced cases, untreated AS can lead to severe kyphosis, resulting in debilitating functional impairment and a significantly reduced quality of life. We present a case of a patient with a fixed thoracolumbar kyphotic deformity that severely affected his daily function. He underwent an L1 and L4 pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) and posterior spinal instrumentation. This case highlights the challenges asso

Downregulation of SWI5 and CTC1 genes: hepatitis B virus DNA polymerase transactivated protein 1-mediated inhibition of DNA repair.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA polymerase transactivated protein 1 (HBVDNAPTP1) is a novel protein upregulated by HBV DNA polymerase, which has been screened by suppression subtractive hybridization technique (SSH) (GenBank Acc. No. AY450389). A vector pcDNA3.1 (-)/myc-His A-HBVDNAPTP1 was constructed and used to transfect acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1. HBVDNAPTP1 expression was detected by Western blot analysis in the cells. A cDNA library of genes downregulated by HBVDNAPTP1 in THP-1 cells was made in pGEM-T Easy using SSH. The cDNAs were sequenced and analyzed with BLAST search agai

The inferiorly based masseter muscle flap: anatomical basis for its use in head and neck reconstructive surgery.

The aim of this study was to investigate and elucidate the anatomical basis for the use of the inferiorly based masseter muscle flap in the reconstruction of oropharyngeal defects after ablative surgery. The anatomy of the masseter muscle, with particular emphasis on its blood supply, was studied using plain and coloured resin injected dissections and a series of digital subtraction angiograms and external carotid arteriograms. Both techniques were demonstrated to be reliable and effective means of anatomical investigation of blood vessels. The vascular anatomy of the masseter muscle and the a

Rise-fall time effects on the brainstem auditory evoked response: mechanisms.

Experiments were conducted to assess the contribution of place mechanisms to the effect of rise--fall time on wave V of the human brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER). Noise bursts of 4- and 10-ms duration were presented at various rise-fall times (0, 1, 2, and 5 ms). Subtractive high-pass masking techniques were used to determine the effect of rise time as a function of derived-band frequency. In general, increasing rise time prolonged wave V latency but did not affect amplitude. Rise-time effects did not depend on derived-band frequency and similar effects were seen in the unmasked cond

Pedicle subtraction osteotomy using ultrasonic bone curette yields fewer durotomies, decreased blood loss: a single surgeon's retrospective experience.

BACKGROUND: Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) is a three column deformity correction technique that can achieve 30 to 40 degrees of correction and is best used for patients with severe rigid sagittal imbalances. Patients report a high degree of satisfaction with quality of life outcomes as a consequence of undergoing PSO. However, complications range between 12% and 40%, including dural tears or neurovascular injuries causing neurological deficit occurring as a consequence of high speed drilling or traction from the spooned retractors used to facilitate exposure. Ultrasonic bone curettes may

Does vertebral level of pedicle subtraction osteotomy correlate with degree of spinopelvic parameter correction?

OBJECT: Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) is a spinal realignment technique that may be used to correct sagittal spinal imbalance. Theoretically, the level and degree of resection via a PSO should impact the degree of sagittal plane correction in the setting of deformity. However, the quantitative effect of PSO level and focal angular change on postoperative spinopelvic parameters has not been well described. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the level/degree of PSO and changes in global sagittal balance and spinopelvic parameters. METHODS: In this multicenter

Iatrogenic and traumatic Dural arteriovenous fistulas: Illustrative cases and literature review.

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) are a type of vascular malformation that form within the dura mater. Though historically considered rare, their detection is expected to increase with the broader use of advanced cerebral angiography techniques. We describe two 80-year-old men presented for neurovascular procedures. The first, following an emergency craniotomy for subdural hematoma (SDH) evacuation, underwent middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE). During the procedure, an incidental, asymptomatic middle meningeal artery and superficial temporal artery to superior sagittal sinus (MMA/S

A novel case of a broken dental anesthetic needle transecting the right internal carotid artery.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Although dental anesthetic needle fractures remain an uncommon occurrence, there is a lack of consensus on the management of the treatment of this complication. Complications could include trismus, dysphagia, or infection that may lead to more deleterious results. CASE DESCRIPTION: In this case study, a 47-year-old man underwent a routine dental extraction at a private office. During administration of the inferior alveolar nerve block, a dental anesthetic needle fractured. The general dental practitioner dismissed the patient and reassured him that no retrieval of the

111In platelet scintigraphy for the noninvasive detection of carotid plaque thrombosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Thrombosis on atherosclerotic lesions in the large extracranial arteries is the main cause of embolization in the distal cerebral circulation and thus is involved in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. The assessment of biological characteristics of lesions that are predictive of thrombotic complications might help in stratification of the risk for stroke but is currently imperfect. METHODS: We compared the performance of (111)In-platelet scintigraphy with blood pool subtraction, ultrasound-based tissue texture analyses, and transcranial Doppler techniques in their ab

Diagnosing anaemia via smartphone colorimetry of the eye in a population of pregnant women.

Objective.Screening for disease using a smartphone camera is an emerging tool for conditions such as jaundice and anaemia, which are associated with a colour change (yellowing in jaundice; pallor in anaemia) of the external tissues. Based on this, we aimed to test a technique to non-invasively screen for anaemia in a population highly affected by anaemia: pregnant women in India. In this group, anaemia can have severe health consequences for both the mother and child.Approach.Over 3 years of data collection, in 486 pregnant women in India, we attempted to replicate a previously successful smar

Multimodal imaging techniques for the diagnosis of congenital left renal arteriovenous fistula: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital renal arteriovenous fistula (RAVF) is a clinically rare condition and frequently missed and misdiagnosed. Multimodal imaging techniques can provide more detailed diagnostic information to help physicians more accurately diagnose and treat diseases. Combining imaging methods to diagnose RAVF has rarely been reported. CASE SUMMARY: A 69-year-old female patient presented with gross hematuria that had persisted for 10 days. The patient underwent ultrasound examinations of the kidneys and renal blood vessels, enhanced computed tomography, three-dimensional computed tomograph

High-flow venous pouch aneurysm in the rabbit carotid artery: A model for large aneurysms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Currently one of the most widely used models for the development of endovascular techniques and coiling devices for treatment of aneurysm is the elastase-induced aneurysm model in the rabbit carotid artery. Microsurgical techniques for creating an aneurysm with a venous pouch have also been established, although both techniques usually result in aneurysms less than 1 cm in diameter. We investigated whether an increase in blood flow toward the neck would produce larger aneurysms in a microsurgical venous pouch model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Microsurgical operations were
