A case of unexpected death of an infant with an abnormally elongated uvula is presented. The child, born prematurely, was recovering from pr … x, and the uvula in particular, in any case of pediatric death suspected to result from asphyxia or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

A 19 day old infant was successfully resuscitated from ventricular fibrillation. The 12 lead ECG was normal, with a normal QT interval, and remains so over three years follow up. DNA analysis revealed a missense mutation (R1193Q) in the SCN5A gene, previously linked with familial sudden unexpected nocturnal death syndrome, also known as Brugada syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Estimate the causes and risk of death, specifically seizure related, in children followed from onset of epilepsy and to contrast … h complicated epilepsy but not uncomplicated epilepsy. The SUDEP rate was similar to or higher than sudden infant death syndrome rates. In uncomplicated epilepsy, sudden and seizure-related death rates were similar to or higher than rates for other common causes of death in young people (eg, accidents, suicides, homicides). The term sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) refers to the unexpected and medically unexplained death of an infant, typically during sleep. This study examines how maternal identity is reconstructed among 14 Jewish Israeli mothers who experienced the loss of a baby to SIDS. We began with the assumption, well-grounded in modern grief models, that loss undermines the bereaved identity and in the case of SIDS the undermine of maternal identity is likely to be intensified due to the perceived failure to protect the infant, the ambiguity of a medically unexplained death, and often the dismissive so…

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to examine the birthweight at which risks of perinatal death, neonatal morbidity, and cesarean del … iration, and cesarean delivery. Births at 5000 g or larger had even higher risks, including risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
CONCLUSION: Birthweight greater than 4500 g, and especially greater than 5000 g, is associated with increased risks of perinatal and infant mortality and morbidity.

I am honored to be asked by the journal to write this personal essay about my career in pediatric neuropathology-a life of immense satisfaction, meaning, and fulfillment. My motivation to enter this discipline is highlighted, as is my decision to perform brain research in the sudden infant death syndrome, the leading cause of postneonatal infant mortality in the United States today. I also touch upon collaborations, mentoring, and experiences along the way-especially with the light microscope. I close with thoughts about the future of the discipline from my perspective as a lifelong devotee.

Infant mortality in North-Rhine Westphalia was increased above the national average throughout the postwar period until today. To clarify th … ortality. Predominant causes of postneonatal mortality were infections, injuries and the diagnosis "sudden infant death syndrome".

OBJECTIVES: To examine the characteristics and circumstances of infants who died while sleeping or in a sleep environment and compare deaths classified as either unintentional asphyxia or an unexplained cause.
DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Data were extracted from the National Fatality Review Case Reporting System and Florida Vital Statistics databases.
PARTICIPANTS: Data on 778 sleep-related infant deaths occurring from 2014 to 2018 in Florida were analysed.
PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE: Cause of death classification as unintentional asphyxia or unexplained.
RESULTS: Overall,

The content and distribution of hemosiderin in the liver, spleen and lungs of stillborn children, newborns and infants were determined histologically by Perl's method (Prussian blue reaction). We describe a study of 59 deaths up to the age of 2 years. The hemosiderin content depends on age and decreases with increasing age. No relevant differences were found in cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In the liver hemosiderin is localized preponderantly in the periphery of the lobules. The spleen shows a diffuse siderosis of the red pulp. Minimal intrapleural, septal and perivasal deposit…

In children, swallowing dysfunction and aspiration are common causes of recurrent pneumonia and can be fatal. The underlying mechanism is still unknown. In this study, we evaluated the swallowing function in 72 neonates and infants by fluoroscopy and followed the course of 39 patients for more than one year. The results of all the examinations were recorded on videotape or a digital imaging system. All 10 patients with neurologic disorder presented cricopharyngeal dysfunction. Of the 12 patients with near miss sudden infant death syndrome, 10 showed nasopharyngeal reflux, and 5 demonstrated cr…

INTRODUCTION: The Kivalliq region of Nunavut, Canada, had a 1996 population of 7,131, of which 87% were Inuit. An attempt was made to charac … 3/1,000 live births, five times Canada's rate. Leading causes of infant deaths were prematurity and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The overall mortality rate was 1.8 times that of Canada, with leading causes of death being cancers (especially lung cancer), circulatory disease, respiratory disease, unintentional injury and suicide.
CONCLUSIONS: Identified areas …

We sought to (1) determine if there is an increased prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in cases of sudden death in infancy and childhood; (2) establish whether there is a link between VDD and infection; and (3) assess if the level of vitamin D can be related to abnormalities in the skeletal survey and rib histology in our cohort. The postmortem reports of cases in which vitamin D levels were measured in 2009 and 2010 were retrieved. When parental consent for audit had been granted, rib histology and skeletal surveys were reviewed. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were measured in 41 pos

The annual report of the Regional Infant and Child Mortality Review Committee (RICMRC) is attached. This Committee has as its mission the review of infant and child deaths so that information can be transformed into action to protect young lives. The 2003 review area includes South Dakota's Minnehaha, Turner, Lincoln, Moody, Lake, McCook, and Union Counties. In 2003 there was one death in this region due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), plus two infant deaths listed as undetermined that could potentially represent SIDS. Two of these three deaths had potential risk factors of soft beddin…

The highest mortality rate among 75 newborns and infants observed has been noted in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, transposition of the great arteries, double outlet of the right ventricle and single ventricle. In the newborn period the mortality rate was 96%, and later on it decreased. Cardiac failure complicated by pneumonia was the most frequent cause of the infant's death (47 cases), then anoxic spells and sudden death (12 cases), diagnostic and surgical procedures (10 cases). The causes of death of six children were apparently not related to the heart disease.
