Postural instability does not necessarily correlate to poor performance: case in point.

BACKGROUND: It is very important for surgeons who perform minimally invasive surgery (MIS) to maintain proper postural stability, which kinematic research can determine. Previous studies in surgical ergonomics have shown that postural stability is correlated to instrument type, task difficulty, and skill level. What should also be considered is that surgeons may strategically change stance or joint movement to achieve better surgical outcomes while potentially subjecting themselves to greater risk. Background information about subjects, e.g., joint impairment, should be considered an important

Working memory and executive functions in transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is usually considered to produce a profound impairment of long-term episodic memory, while at the same time sparing working memory. However, this neuropsychological dissociation has rarely been examined in detail. While a few studies have assessed some components of working memory in TGA, the results that have been obtained are far from conclusive. To clarify this issue, we carried out a comprehensive investigation of working memory in 10 patients during a TGA attack. In the first study, we report the results from three patients examined with a battery of neurops

Balancing the rota: registered nurses' preferences for shift patterns - a discrete choice experiment.

OBJECTIVE: To elicit and quantify registered nurses' (RNs') preferences for key shift attributes and to estimate the trade-offs between shift pattern characteristics and pay. DESIGN: Cross-sectional online discrete choice experiment with d-efficient design; 12 choice tasks per respondent. Preferences were estimated using multinomial logit models with clustered standard errors; willingness to accept (WTA) values were derived as ratios of attribute coefficients to the pay coefficient. SETTING: United Kingdom. PARTICIPANTS: 1449 registered nurses (RNs) recruited via the Nursing and Midwifery C

Effects of mental fatigue on basketball decision-making and visual search behavior.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of mental fatigue on basketball decision-making performance and visual search behavior, with particular emphasis on whether these effects vary as a function of skill level. METHODS: A 3 (skill level: high-skill, intermediate, novice) × 2 (fatigue status: fatigued, non-fatigued) between-subjects factorial design was employed. Sixty male university students (mean age ≈ 20.2 years) were classified according to basketball skill level as high-skill, intermediate, or novice. Participants completed basketball decision-making tasks based on game footage,

Feasibility and acceptability of task sharing collection of HIV viral load dried blood spot samples with community lay cadres: A cross-sectional diagnostic validation study in Zimbabwe.

Viral load (VL) testing is a critical tool for clinical management of HIV, yet healthcare worker (HCW) shortages remain a key barrier to VL … parability, high CLC competency, and client acceptability. Policymakers should consider formalizing task shifting of VL sample collection within facilities. Further evidence on the feasibility of community-based DBS collection is needed.

Physical activity and executive function in adolescents: Dual rumination pathways and mindfulness moderation.

BACKGROUND: Late adolescence is a developmental period in which executive functions are relatively consolidated but remain sensitive to behavioral and environmental influences. Physical activity (PA) has been associated with executive-function outcomes, but the psychological factors that may be related to this association remain unclear. Objective: This study examined whether PA_total was associated with a reaction-time-based executive-function composite (EF_RT) through intrusive rumination (IR) and deliberate rumination (DR), and whether mindfulness moderated the PA_total → IR and IR → EF_RT

Sex differences in cholinergic circuits and behavioral disruptions following chronic ethanol exposure with and without thiamine deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated differences in the vulnerabilities of males and females to alcohol use disorder and alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD). According to epidemiological and clinical findings, females appear to be more sensitive to the effects of alcohol and thiamine deficiency and have a worse prognosis in recovery from neurocognitive deficits compared with males. This study aimed to characterize the effects of chronic ethanol (EtOH) toxicity and thiamine deficiency across the sexes using rodent models. METHODS: Male and female Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to chron

Attributional explanations in preschool teachers' competence judgments on tangram tasks: links with learning behaviors and task difficulty.

OBJECTIVE: Teachers' competence judgments may influence children's educational experiences, yet the factors underlying these judgments and the attributional reasoning accompanying them remain insufficiently understood. This study examined how preschool teachers evaluate children's potential competence in tangram tasks and how these evaluations relate to children's learning behaviors. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was used with 195 children and 57 teachers in Türkiye. RESULTS: As task complexity increased, the proportion of children evaluated as competent decreased signi

Sometimes you look more when you know less: Goal dependent eye movements during language processing.

In the literature on language comprehension during concurrent scene viewing (i.e., the "visual world paradigm"), many studies tacitly assume that the more certain listeners are that an entity is being referred to, the more they gaze at it-and findings often appear to support this assumption. Here we directly test this assumption across two experiments that used identical linguistic materials and visual scenes but differed in task demands. In a task in which participants were instructed to act upon the referent of a pronoun, we observed the typical positive relationship between referential cert

Transtibial prosthetic alignment has small effects on whole-body angular momentum during functional tasks.

Due to the loss of ankle function, many people with a transtibial amputation (TTA) have difficulty maintaining balance during functional tasks. Prosthetic alignment may affect how people with TTA maintain balance as it affects ground reaction forces (GRFs) and centers of pressure. We quantified the effect of prosthetic alignment on dynamic balance during several functional tasks. Ten people with TTA and 10 controls without TTA completed tasks including walking and transitioning from a chair. Participants with TTA completed all tasks with their prescribed alignment and six shifted alignments, i

Eye-head coordination and dynamic visual scanning as indicators of visuo-cognitive demands in driving simulator.

Driving is an everyday task involving a complex interaction between visual and cognitive processes. As such, an increase in the cognitive and/or visual demands can lead to a mental overload which can be detrimental for driving safety. Compiling evidence suggest that eye and head movements are relevant indicators of visuo-cognitive demands and attention allocation. This study aims to investigate the effects of visual degradation on eye-head coordination as well as visual scanning behavior during a highly demanding task in a driving simulator. A total of 21 emmetropic participants (21 to 34 year

Neural changes with tactile learning reflect decision-level reweighting of perceptual readout.

Despite considerable work, the neural basis of perceptual learning remains uncertain. For visual learning, although some studies suggested that changes in early sensory representations are responsible, other studies point to decision-level reweighting of perceptual readout. These competing possibilities have not been examined in other sensory systems, investigating which could help resolve the issue. Here we report a study of human tactile microspatial learning in which participants achieved >six-fold decline in acuity threshold after multiple training sessions. Functional magnetic resonance i

EEG spectra in dyslexic and normal readers during oral and silent reading.

EEGs of extensively screened dyslexics and normal readers were recorded while they read easy and difficult texts silently and orally, and during two other verbal tasks which also differed in overt speaking but had no reading component: narrative speaking and listening to a story. Mid-temporal, central and parietal leads were referenced to linked ears and to Cz. Large differences between tasks and between groups were found. With the linked ears reference, power was higher in all bands in oral reading than in silent reading, with the largest change occurring in the temporal leads. In the theta a

Bilateral retinal implants for improving visual restoration: a simulated bionic vision study.

Degenerative diseases of the retina produce a severe deterioration in visual perception. Visual prostheses enable partial vision restoration by eliciting phosphenes (perceived spots of light) through electrical stimulation. By using augmented reality (AR) to simulate bionic vision (SBV), this study aims to provide insights on the potential benefits of bilateral retinal implants. While monocular implants have been extensively studied, research on binocular implants remains limited. Twenty-four volunteers participated in this study, and were divided into two groups, SBV-monocular and SBV-binocul

Beyond dual hubs: Task and aging shape taxonomic and thematic semantic relationships in the human brain.

Semantic knowledge about concepts and their relationships is central to human cognition. Taxonomic relationships link concepts belonging to the same category (e.g. dog and bear), while thematic relationships connect concepts co-occurring in the same events (e.g. dog and leash). The dual-hub theory proposes that taxonomic relations preferentially engage the anterior temporal lobe (ATL), whereas thematic relations preferentially involve the temporo-parietal cortex (TPC). However, it remains unclear whether taxonomic and thematic representations depend on the concurrent task and how they change w

Neural Coding of Visual Objects Rapidly Reconfigures to Reflect Subtrial Shifts in Attentional Focus.

Every day, we respond to the dynamic world around us by choosing actions to meet our goals. Flexible neural populations are thought to support this process by adapting to prioritize task-relevant information, driving coding in specialized brain regions toward stimuli and actions that are currently most important. Accordingly, human fMRI shows that activity patterns in frontoparietal cortex contain more information about visual features when they are task-relevant. However, if this preferential coding drives momentary focus, for example, to solve each part of a task in turn, it must reconfigure

Voluntary ankle contraction reproduces centre of pressure features commonly attributed to automatic postural control.

BACKGROUND: Postural control is often assessed through centre of pressure (COP) analysis to infer underlying control mechanisms. For example, during dual-tasking, measures such as sample entropy have been interpreted as reflecting changes in automaticity, whereas shifts in frequency content have been associated with stiffening, often attributed to ankle co-contraction. However, the specificity of these metrics remains unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: The objective of the present study was to compare the effects of dual-tasking and voluntary ankle contraction on COP and electromyographic (EMG) acti

Regional homogeneity and interhemispheric connectivity alterations in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal neural synchronization and hemispheric lateralization imbalances are core features of major depressive disorder (MDD), but objective Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) - derived biomarkers capturing these abnormalities remain underdeveloped. METHODS: We recruited 236 MDD patients and 124 healthy controls (HCs) who completed a verbal fluency task (VFT) during 52-channel fNIRS scanning. Regional Homogeneity (ReHo) and hemispheric Laterality Index (LI) were computed to assess local neural synchronization and interhemispheric balance across four VFT phases (p

The role of the hippocampus in trace conditioning: temporal discontinuity or task difficulty?

It is well established that the hippocampal formation is critically involved in the acquisition of trace memories, a paradigm in which the conditioned (CS) and unconditioned stimuli (US) are separated by a temporal gap (Solomon et al., 1986). The structure is reportedly not critical for the acquisition of delay memories, where the CS and the US overlap in time (Berger & Orr, 1983; Schmaltz & Theios, 1972). Based on these results, it is often stated that the hippocampus is involved in "filling the gap" or otherwise associating the two stimuli in time. However, in addition to the presence of a t
