Crossmodal influences on food perception in those with smell and taste disorders: A preliminary study.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals living with Smell and Taste Disorders (SATDs) have a reduced quality of life in a number of different ways with one central factor being their inability to appreciate food flavour and thereby have a less fulfilling eating experience. Separately, it has been demonstrated that the perception of food can be influenced by senses beyond smell and taste. The aim of the current study was therefore to explore whether altering the way in which food is presented, influences its perception for those with SATDs. METHODS: Participants (n = 33) who self-identified as living with sme…

Characterization and Comparison of Dietary Taste Patterns in Five Countries With Differing Obesity Prevalence.

Considering associations between taste, food intake, and overconsumption, this work aimed to characterize and compare dietary taste patterns across five countries with differing rates of obesity prevalence: France (10% of the population), the Netherlands (15%), the United Kingdom (UK) (27%), Australia (32%), and the United States (US) (44%). Taste intensity values for all five basic tastes and fatty mouthfeel were assigned to all foods in national dietary intake records. Dietary taste patterns were then characterized and compared using taste clusters and taste exposure. In cluster analyses, al…

Beyond the Tongue: Brassica Vegetables, Distributed Taste Receptors, and Their Role in Holistic Health.

This article explores the expanded understanding of taste receptors and their role in health, with a focus on brassica vegetables. Recent research reveals that taste receptors are distributed throughout the body, influencing various physiological processes beyond simple oral taste perception. Brassica vegetables, also known as cruciferous vegetables, contain glucosinolates that convert into bioactive isothiocyanates, which interact with these widespread taste receptors. These interactions contribute to numerous health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential chemopreve…

Integrative analysis of taste genetics and the dental plaque microbiome in early childhood caries.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a multifactorial disease mainly caused by the oral microbiome; however, it is also influenced by host genetics and environmental factors. This study investigates the interplay between genetic variants in taste-related genes and the microbiome in ECC. Using a case-control design involving 538 children, we obtained dental plaque microbiome profiles and genetic variants across 55 candidate genes. Including the socioeconomic factor index (SEFI) as one of the confounders, we find a significant association of three taste-gene variants with ECC and microbial diversity.…

Formulation and evaluation of taste-masked curcumin nanoparticles for improved antioxidant and anticancer efficacy.

Curcumin, a natural polyphenolic compound derived from turmeric, is well-documented for its therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities. However, its clinical and nutraceutical applications are limited by its poor aqueous solubility, low oral bioavailability, and unpleasant taste. This study aimed to encapsulate curcumin in alginate-based nanoparticles, with and without chitosan coating, to improve its palatability while preserving its therapeutic efficacy. Two optimized formulations uncoated curcumin-loaded alginate nanoparticles …

Clinical features of taste disorders in Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: a report of 10 cases.

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) is a very rare gastrointestinal disorder with ectodermal abnormalities. Taste abnormalities appear in more than 80% of cases. Our objective was to investigate the characteristics of CCS. Ten patients with taste abnormalities who were diagnosed with CCS were included. A medical interview, examination of the tongue findings, and blood tests were performed, and taste functions were assessed using an electrogustometry (EGM) and a filter paper disc (FPD) before and after treatment. There was nail atrophy in all cases, weight loss in 8 cases, hair loss in 6 cases, ski…

Unleashing the pharmacological potential of taste receptors in reproductive processes beyond their gustatory role.

Traditionally, taste receptors (TRs) have been understood to reside within the taste buds on the tongue, serving as initiators for different taste perceptions. However, recent research has expanded our understanding, revealing that TRs are found throughout the body and perform a wide range of functions beyond taste perception as non-tasting functions. These receptors, along with their genetic variations, have been linked to various human health conditions. They are activated by an array of substances, including hormones, nutrients, and toxins, indicating their involvement in numerous biologica…

Influence of Chronic Mental Stress on Taste and Pungency Due to End-of-Semester Examination.

Mental stress is a known risk factor for lifestyle-related diseases. Previously, we reported that short-term stress sharpens the sense of taste and dulls the sense of pungency, but in this study, we examined the effects of chronic mental stress on taste and pungency by comparing normal days with end-of-semester examination days. Furthermore, the relationship between pungency measured on the tongue and the corresponding skin current value causing forearm pain was investigated. Taste and pungency were blindly measured using the filter paper disc method on a normal day and the day before the end-…

Taste receptor type 1 member 3 is required for the fertility of male mice.

Male infertility is a global health concern. However, its underlying pathophysiology remains unclear. Taste receptor type 1 member 3 (TAS1R3) is highly expressed in the testes, indicating its potential involvement in male fertility. Using wild-type and Tas1r3 knockout (KO) mice, we investigated whether TAS1R3 modulates male reproductive function. Tas1r3 KO mice exhibited reduced male fertility compared to WT mice, with fewer live pups per litter and a delayed first litter. Testicular transcriptome analysis indicated suppressed PKA/CREB/StAR signaling-mediated testosterone synthesis in Tas1r3 K…

Longitudinal imaging of the taste bud in vivo with two-photon laser scanning microscopy.

Taste bud cells in the tongue transduce taste information from chemicals in food and transmit this information to gustatory neurons in the geniculate ganglion that innervate taste buds. The peripheral taste system is a dynamic environment where taste bud cells are continuously replaced, but further understanding of this phenomenon has been limited by the inability to directly observe this process. To overcome this challenge, we combined chronic in vivo two-photon laser scanning microscopy with genetic labeling of gustatory neurons and taste buds to observe how cells within the taste bud change…

All the Better to Taste You With, My Dear: ED Management of Mammalian Bites.

Mammal bites account for over 5 million visits to Emergency Departments (EDs) annually. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) need to stay abreast of current guidelines, changes to antibiotic regimens that are now most effective, and understand in what circumstances collaboration with other specialists is indicated. It is not enough to care for the wound, itself, but rather understand in what presentations additional care may be needed despite the fact that there is no clear evidence at the time of evaluation of the need for advanced care. Additionally, NPs should understand what resources are available w

Determination of heavy metals in edible oils by a novel voltammetry taste sensor array.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne infection found in the eastern United States. In recent years, it has become an emergent Michigan public health concern. Lyme carditis is a recognized rare complication which is classically characterized by rapidly fluctuating degrees of heart block. In severe cases, or if inappropriately treated, Lyme carditis can also result in profound bradycardia, perimyocarditis, and sudden cardiac death. This report describes the first documented case of third degree heart block associated with Lyme carditis to occur in Michigan. This is a retrospective case rep
