Pyomyositis, an endemic disease of tropical origin, is increasingly reported in temperate zones, especially in patients with diabetes mellitus and in the immunocompromised. A 28-year-old renal transplant recipient presented with perforating skin lesions (Kyrle's disease), thigh pain, and swelling associated with fever. A gallium scan of the thigh led to surgical exploration and a diagnosis of pyomyositis. To our knowledge, the association of Kyrle's disease with pyomyositis has not been reported before. The significance of this combination of conditions in our patient remains unexplained.

A case-control study was conducted to determine the risk factors of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). In this study, 103 cases of PACG patients and 95 cases of non-glaucoma controls were investigated. It was found that the risk factors of PACG were family history of glaucoma, irritable temper, short distance between eyes and workplace at work and high blood pressure. The results did not support that cigarette smoking, alcoholic consumption, diabetes mellitus, myopia and blood types were related with PACG.

To explore the controversial "brainstem theory" of spasmodic torticollis, eight consecutively referred patients were examined. Three independent examinations were conducted on the same day: a videofluoroscopic barium swallowing examination, an instrumental speech examination, and a brainstem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) analysis. Swallowing was normal in two patients; speech physiology, in five; and BAEPs, in all. Normal BAEPs refute the brainstem theory, while abnormalities of speech and swallowing temper this conclusion. Several alternative explanations are proposed.

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior in preschoolers is considered normative under certain circumstances; however sometimes it may be a sign of both internalizing and externalizing disorders. This study aimed to investigate the associations among children’s disruptive behavior scale scores, child ADHD symptom scores, and parents’ depression, anxiety, and stress scores. METHODS: Participants were recruited from preschools in two central districts of Denizli, Türkiye. We assessed disruptive behavior with the Multidimensional Assessment of Preschool Disruptive Behavior, child ADHD symptoms using the A

The seasonal forms of the temperate butterfly Araschnia levana (Nymphalidae: Nymphalinae) differ in mass, wing area, wing loading (i.e., the ratio of mass to wing area), and colouration. Spring individuals are predominantly orange with higher wing loading while summer individuals are black with a white stripe and have lower wing loading. However, it remains unclear if and how these seasonal differences affect heating and cooling dynamics. We compared thermal responses of seasonal forms, focusing on the roles of morphology and colouration. Further, we assessed whether live butterflies heat and

The role of bacteriophages in spreading antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) has been debated for over a decade. Several questions regarding the ARG dissemination potential of bacteriophages remain. For example, do phages frequently carry ARGs? Besides generalized transduction (GT), could specialized transduction (ST) play an essential role in the spread of ARGs? To address these questions, we thoroughly analyzed the available phage genomes, viromes, temperate phages, and prophage sequences for the presence of all known ARGs and their genomic context. Out of the 38,861 phage genome sequences

OBJECTIVES: The global spread of Aedes albopictus, a vector of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, has caused rising autochthonous cases in non-tropical regions. This review synthesizes evidence on psychological and social determinants of individual preventive behaviors in non-endemic settings.
METHOD: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, PubMed and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed quantitative studies published up to January 6, 2026. Eligible studies reported associations between individual-level psychosocial factors (e.g., risk perception) and preventive behaviors in adults. Effect si

OBJECTIVES: White piedra (WP) is a fungal infection that affects hair shafts, resulting in the formation of soft nodules that can be white, gray, or brown. While it was initially believed to be caused by Trichosporon beigelii, genetic analysis has reclassified Trichosporon inkin, T. ovoides, and T. cutaneum, as the primary causative agents of WP. In this report, we present a rare documented case of WP caused by Candida orthopsilosis, as a member of Candida parapsilosis complex, occurring without presence of Trichosporon in a temperate region in northern Iran.

Varicella, known as chickenpox, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), with an estimated 84 million cases annually. It primarily affects children, for most of whom it is a self-limiting illness. However, there are an estimated 950 000 disability-adjusted life years attributed to VZV annually, disproportionately affecting lower-income settings. Children with impaired immunity and neonates are particularly at risk for severe varicella. Epidemiology varies between tropical and temperate regions with infections occurring at an earlier age in temperate climates.Varicella is a vaccine-preven

The mosquito species Aedes aegypti (Linneaus) is the vector of multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Risk of infections associated with these arboviruses continues to expand as the geographical range of Ae. aegypti extends into temperate regions. Although Ae. aegypti is abundant along the U.S.-Mexico border, the ecology of this mosquito species in this temperate/subtropical desert is not well understood. Our study objective was to estimate the seasonal population density in 2 urban communities: Sparks, El Paso, Texas and Anapra, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua,

Freshwater crayfish Pontastacus leptodactylus is an indigenous European species of considerable ecological and commercial significance. However, it is highly susceptible to the oomycete Aphanomyces astaci, the causative agent of crayfish plague. Although its importance is widely recognized, little information exists on how seasonality affects the physiology and welfare of this species. The present study was designed to (i) investigate seasonal effects on the physiological responses of P. leptodactylus in relation to abiotic factors and crayfish plague outbreak, and (ii) identify the most suita

The influence of climate on parasite distribution has been demonstrated in different regions worldwide. Despite its small size, Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) constitutes a 'biodiversity laboratory' due to the huge climatic differences between municipalities. Feral cats may represent a threat to biodiversity due to their predatory behaviour. In addition, they may be a source of pathogens zoonotic to humans. To study the climatic/seasonal influence and prevalence of feral cat parasites throughout the island, a total of 290 stool samples from 29 feral cat colonies were analysed following s

OBJECTIVE: DSM-5 has added a new developmentally appropriate child and adolescent mood disorder subtype called disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). The core features of DMDD are temper outbursts (manifested by either verbal rages and/or physical aggression) and unrelenting irritability or anger. Currently, the literature is lacking a thorough review of the possible treatment options for the cardinal symptoms constituting DMDD. The objective of this article is to provide a thorough review of peer-reviewed studies on the subject of pharmacological treatment options for children and ado

Adaptation of global food systems to climate change is essential to feed the world. Tropical cattle production, a mainstay of profitability for farmers in the developing world, is dominated by heat, lack of water, poor quality feedstuffs, parasites, and tropical diseases. In these systems European cattle suffer significant stock loss, and the cross breeding of taurine x indicine cattle is unpredictable due to the dilution of adaptation to heat and tropical diseases. We explored the genetic architecture of ten traits of tropical cattle production using genome wide association studies of 4,662 a

The roles of testosterone (T) during reproduction are often complex and vary among and within vertebrate taxa and locations, making general hypotheses relating T to breeding behavior and success difficult to integrate. In birds, T is thought to influence degrees of territoriality and associated aggression in males to maximize breeding success. Importantly, most work supporting these ideas has been conducted in the Northern Hemisphere. However, accumulating work on tropical species has shown divergent patterns of T in association with breeding behavior. The compilation of work from northern tem
