Chemical pleurodesis using tetracycline is an accepted and commonly employed treatment of pneumothorax and pleural effusions. We describe a case of chemical burn of the pleura in a ventilated 41-year-old who came to thoracotomy after 3 days of continuous intrapleural infusion of tetracycline at another hospital. To our knowledge this has not been previously reported although other adverse effects of this procedure are documented. We suggest that damage to the pleura and underlying lung may occur if excessive amounts of tetracycline are used in attempted pleurodesis.

This manuscript reviews the development over the last 20 years of the evidence supporting the clinical application of a controlled delivery device for the treatment of human periodontitis. This article discusses the use of tetracyclines in the clinical management of periodontal infections. A review of the drugs pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and potential adverse effects shows that they are relatively safe if used in appropriate dosages and under controlled conditions. Current data suggest that the routine use of tetracyclines in conjunction with the treatment of periodontitis is unnecessary. However, their distinctive characteristics can be utilized in different delivery systems as an adjunctive aid to conventional treatment of juvenile and refractory forms of periodontitis.

Cold panniculitis is a form of physical panniculitis due to exposure of skin to severe cold. It usually appears on the cheeks of infants and children. It has also been reported on the thighs and buttocks of young females. Its clinical manifestations include red, cold, indurated plaques or nodules which appear one to three days after exposure to low temperatures and resolve spontaneously within several weeks without scarring. The histopathological picture shows a perivascular infiltrate of lymphoid and histiocytic cells at the dermal-subcutaneous junction in the early phase of the reaction (1).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the procedure of aspiration and tetracycline sclerotherapy in the management of simple ovarian cysts.

OBJECTIVES: To study the efficacy of tetracycline sclerotherapy in renal transplant recipients with symptomatic hydroceles.
METHODS: A total of 21 patients with symptomatic hydroceles following renal transplantation underwent aspiration of hydrocele and injection of tetracycline hydrochloride. Sclerosant solution was prepared by dissolving 1 g tetracycline hydrochloride powder in 10 mL 1% lidocaine. The amount of sclerosant used depended on the volume of the sac: 5 mL for a sac containing up to 100 mL and 2.5 mL of sclerosant was added for each increase of 100 mL in sac volume.

Tetracycline-resistant Tet M-negative isolates of Actinomyces viscosus, Eubacterium lentum, Mobiluncus curtisii, and Mobiluncus mulieris were screened with the Tet K, Tet L, and Tet O DNA probes. We analyzed the effects of tetracycline hydrochloride or minocycline hydrochloride sclerotherapy on 66 recurrent thyroid cysts. All were hemorrhagic lesions except one serous cyst; cytologic study showed all were benign. On average, three treatments were given until resolution or the patient became unavailable for follow-up.
