OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence rate of hearing loss at different levels of noise in a textile factory and to find out the levels of hearing loss according to duration (years) of employment in the factory.
METHODS: Seventy workers exposed to different levels of noise were matched with 70 persons in the community who were not exposed to occupational noise. Noise levels dB(A) were measured at different locations in the factory. Hearing was assessed in all participants. Few cases were excluded from the study because hearing loss was due to factors other than exposure to noise.

A survey was conducted at 15 textile plants with dyehouses in western Sweden. Employees with a history of work related rhinitis, asthma, or skin symptoms were offered a clinical and immunological investigation including skin prick tests, skin patch tests, and radioallergosorbent tests (RASTs) to detect specific allergy to reactive dyes. In 48 men occupationally exposed to CS2 the following glycoproteins were estimated in blood serum, using radial immunodiffusion on M-Partigen plates: alpha1-acid glycoprotein, alpha1-antitrypsin, alpha2-HS-glycoprotein, alpha2-macroglobulin, Gc glycoprotein, hemopexin, haptoglobin, ceruluplasmin and beta2-glycoprotein I. The studies indicated a highly statistically significant increase of: alpha1-acid--glycoprotein and Gc glycoprotein, and decrease of: alpha1-antitrypsins, alpha2-HS--glycoprotein and beta2-glycoprotein.
