Importation of Hyalomma marginatum, vector of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, into the United Kingdom by migratory birds.

Hyalomma marginatum ticks are an important vector of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus which can result in a severe and potentially fatal disease in humans. Given the continued emergence of clinical cases in Eurasia and focalised upsurges of H. marginatum populations in Europe, it seemed prudent to assess the potential of this vector species to be introduced into the United Kingdom. Immature forms of H. marginatum are frequent ectoparasites of passerine birds many of which migrate from Africa to the UK each spring. Incoming birds were inspected for ticks during the spring migration in 201

First records of Hyalomma aegyptium (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) from the Russian spur-thighed tortoise, Testudo graeca nikolskii, with an analysis of tick population dynamics.

During the fall of 1995 and the spring of 1996, 77 statistically comparable tick collections, comprising 792 specimens, were made from adults of the Russian spur-thighed tortoise, Testudo graeca nikolskii, at 4 sites along Russia's Black Sea coast. These are the first tick collections reported from T. g. nikolskii since its recognition as a taxonomic entity. All ticks were determined to be Hyalomma (Hyalomma) aegyptium, a common tortoise parasite in southern Russia that in 1930 was erroneously designated the type of subgenus Hyalommasta. Male ticks were recovered from more tortoises (67) than

Cattle tick control in India: Current strategies and future directions.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs) are among the most economically significant constraints to a sustainable cattle and buffalo production in India. Despite decades of chemical-based control strategies, indiscriminate and poorly regulated acaricide use has contributed to widespread resistance across multiple tick species and acaricide classes. This review discusses the development in respect of tick control practices, documents the prevalence and mechanisms of acaricide resistance and evaluates the integrated tick control strategies including host genetics, biological control and phyto-acari

Cattle Immunization with T7 Phage-Displayed Whole-Tick Antigens Reduces Amblyomma americanum Feeding Efficiency and Blocks Larval Tick Hatching.

This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a T7 phage display platform to deliver a library of tick antigens as a vaccine to disrupt tick feeding in cattle. Cattle were vaccinated at three-week intervals via intradermal and intramuscular routes with a cocktail of male and female Amblyomma americanum T7 phage display cDNA libraries, with and without adjuvant. ELISA and Western blot analyses confirmed that vaccinated cattle mounted immune responses directed against phage-displayed tick proteins rather than the T7 phage backbone. Vaccine-induced antibodies recognized both native tick saliva

Quantitative proteomics analysis reveals core and variable tick salivary proteins at the tick-vertebrate host interface.

Few studies have examined tick proteomes, how they adapt to their environment, and their roles in the parasite-host interactions that drive tick infestation and pathogen transmission. Here we used a proteomics approach to screen for biologically and immunologically relevant proteins acting at the tick-host interface during tick feeding and, as proof of principle, measured host antibody responses to some of the discovered candidates. We used a label-free quantitative proteomic workflow to study salivary proteomes of (i) wild Ixodes ricinus ticks fed on different hosts, (ii) wild or laboratory t

Diversity of ectoparasites in sheep flocks in São Paulo, Brazil.

The occurrence of ectoparasites in sheep flocks is frequently reported but seldom quantified. Sheep production used to be a predominantly family activity in the state of São Paulo (Brazil), but it began to become a commercial activity in the past decade. Thus, information about the ectoparasites existing in sheep flocks has become necessary. The present data were obtained by means of questionnaires sent to all sheep breeders belonging to the 'Associação Paulista de Criadores de Ovinos' (ASPACO; São Paulo State Association of Sheep Breeders). Response reliability was tested by means of random v

How ticks keep ticking in the adversity of host immune reactions.

Ixodid ticks are acknowledged as one of the most important hematophagous arthropods because of their ability in transmitting a variety of tick-borne diseases. Mathematical models have been developed, based on emerging knowledge about tick ecology, pathogen epidemiology and their interface, to understand tick population dynamics and tick-borne diseases spread patterns. However, no serious effort has been made to model and assess the impact of host immunity triggered by tick feeding on the distribution of the tick population according to tick stages and on tick population extinction and persiste

First report of the hard tick Ixodes Ricinus on dogs in Lebanon.

Ixodes ricinus is a hard tick that can infest a large array of hosts. It is mostly abundant in the cool, humid deciduous and coniferous woods and forests of Europe. All I. ricinus life stages are potential vectors of many diseases, most notably Lyme disease, which affects millions of people yearly. Lebanon, an Asian Mediterranean country with mild cool winters and hot dry summers, lacks many reports concerning ticks. A study on tick abundance and identification on dogs presented to veterinary facilities, over the course of the years 2020 and 2021 was done. Several species of ticks were identif

Urological Evidence of Tick Bites in Children.

Ticks pose a serious threat to individuals of all ages owing to numerous physical illnesses including chills, aches, and a rash. Tick-borne illnesses range from a mild fever that may be treated at home to a severe disease necessitating hospitalization. Children are at an increased risk of tick bites owing to to their exposure to tick-infested areas during the summer. We report 2 cases of boys aged 3 and 8 years who sustained tick bites to the hemiscrotum and penis. Overnight hospitalization and a course of antibiotics were mandatory. In the first case, the child experienced significant scrotal

Differential role of passerine birds in distribution of Borrelia spirochetes, based on data from ticks collected from birds during the postbreeding migration period in Central Europe.

Borrelia spirochetes in bird-feeding ticks were studied in the Czech Republic. During the postbreeding period (July to September 2005), 1,080 passerine birds infested by 2,240 Ixodes ricinus subadult ticks were examined. Borrelia garinii was detected in 22.2% of the ticks, Borrelia valaisiana was detected in 12.8% of the ticks, Borrelia afzelii was detected in 1.6% of the ticks, and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto was detected in 0.3% of the ticks. After analysis of infections in which the blood meal volume and the stage of the ticks were considered, we concluded that Eurasian blackbirds (T

Acquired resistance to ixodid ticks induced by tick cement antigen.

Antisera from guinea pigs made resistant to infestation with an ixodid tick of east and central Africa, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, were used to identify the tick antigens they recognized by immunoblotting. Most of the antigens were found in tick salivary glands and in tick attachment cement. Antisera from R. appendiculatus-resistant guinea pigs also recognized some salivary-gland antigens in ticks of other species (R. pulchellus, R. evertsi, Amblyomma variegatum and A. gemma). Antibodies against the most strongly recognized R. appendiculatus antigen, a 20-kDa molecule, were only poorly reac

Infection dynamics of Metarhizium anisopliae in Rhipicephalus microplus and the role of tick traits in susceptibility.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) pose a major threat to global livestock production, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, and their burden is projected to increase worldwide in the coming decades as a result of climate change. In Brazil, tick infestations are responsible for economic losses estimated at about USD 3.24 billion annually. Growing resistance to chemical acaricides necessitates alternative control strategies such as biological agents. This study assessed the pathogenicity of a local strain of Metarhizium anisopliae (PR1) against adult Rhipicephalus microplus ticks using the …

Amblyomma rotundatum (Koch, 1844) (Acari: Ixodidae) two-host life-cycle on Viperidae snakes.

Amblyomma rotundatum is an ixodid tick that infests ectothermic animals and reproduces exclusively by parthenogenesis. This tick has been frequently reported to infest reptiles and amphibians, under natural conditions and sometimes in captivity. It was described in Brazil and several other countries of South, Central and North America. Although many studies have reported aspects of its biology, none of them has used regularly either ophidian as hosts, or controlled temperature, humidity and luminosity for parasitic stages. The objective of this experiment was to study the life cycle of A. rotu

The ecology of Colorado tick fever in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. III. Habitats supporting the virus.

Ecologic studies of small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) were conducted in 1974 in order to identify the specific habitats within the Lower Montane Forest that support Colorado tick fever (CTF) virus. Data was collected on the abundance and distribution of 4 primary rodent species, tick infestation, CTF virus, and neutralizing antibody prevalence. Rodents were captured along transects crossing different habitats. Open stands of ponderosa pine and shrubs on dry, rocky surfaces were found to be important for maintaining CTF virus.
