The perception of facial asymmetry using 3-dimensional simulated images.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the perception of facial asymmetry in young adults to identify the amounts of chin asymmetry that can be regarded as normal and may benefit from correction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) images of 56 individuals of mixed ethnicity were obtained and used to produce average 3D images of male and female faces. Distortion was then applied to these average faces using a 3D graphics package to simulate different amounts of chin point asymmetry. Five observer groups (lay individuals, dental students, dental care professionals, dental practitioners, and ortho

Through the eyes of anxiety: Dissecting threat bias via emotional-binocular rivalry.

An extensive body of research has demonstrated that anxious individuals abnormally process threat-related content. Yet, the manner in which clinical anxiety affects the selection of threatening signals and their maintenance within consciousness is yet to be explored. The present study used an emotional binocular rivalry (e-BR) procedure, in which pictures of faces depicting either fearful or neutral expressions competed with pictures of a house for conscious perception. We assumed that first- or cumulative-preferred perception of faces with fearful over neutral expression (i.e., initial or sus

Development and Evaluation of a Virtual Environment to Assess Cycling Hazard Perception Skills.

Safe cycling requires situational awareness to identify and perceive hazards in the environment to react to and avoid dangerous situations. Concurrently, tending to external distractions leads to a failure to identify hazards or to respond appropriately in a time-constrained manner. Hazard perception training can enhance the ability to identify and react to potential dangers while cycling. Although cycling on the road in the presence of driving cars provides an excellent opportunity to develop and evaluate hazard perception skills, there are obvious ethical and practical risks, requiring exten

Temporality, trauma and care of repeat adolescent offenders.

In recent years the matter of repeat young offenders has raised questions for and bewildered the institutions caring for them. The temporality of these youngsters is ingrained in the current and urgent moment, and in the repetition of acts of delinquency, which preclude them from having a linear perception of time. This study reflects on the different temporalities with which institutions need to work and on how the judicial, educational, and psychological times can, by building bridges between the present and the past, help piece together the story of adolescents' lives. The personal history

Influence of HIV status and age on cognitive representations of others.

In 2 studies the postulate that the perception of time left in life influences the ways that people conceptualize social relationships was explored. It was hypothesized that when time is limited, emotional aspects of relationships are highly salient. In Study 1, a card-sort paradigm involving similarity judgments demonstrated, for a sample of persons 18 to 88 years old, that the prominence of affect in the mental representations of prospective social partners is positively associated with age. In Study 2, the same experimental approach was applied to a sample of young gay men similar to one an

Dual-Modal Safety Framework for Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy via Endoscopic Vision and Haptic Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Teleoperated flexible bronchoscopy lacks distal haptic feedback, increasing the risk of unobservable iatrogenic tissue trauma during endoluminal exploration. METHODS: This study proposes a robot-assisted bronchoscopy system integrated with a dual-modal safety framework. A visual module utilises image moments to provide predictive alerts for collision avoidance. Concurrently, a Transformer-based network estimates distal interaction torques from proximal actuation, enabling real-time haptic perception at the leader console. RESULTS: Phantom validations across fragile tissue rupture

Effects of genital self-image and perceived romantic relationship quality on sexual satisfaction of infertile women.

The researchers aimed to investigate the effect of genital self-image and perceived romantic relationship quality on sexual satisfaction of infertile women. The study was designed as a descriptive and correlational study and conducted face to face between July 2024 and October 2024 with 363 infertile women. The perception of genital self-image and the time elapsed between the diagnosis of infertility, and the start of treatment affected sexual satisfaction levels of the participants. The lowest score in sexual satisfaction was received from the communication dimension. It appears that female s

A model of episodic memory: mental time travel along encoded trajectories using grid cells.

The definition of episodic memory includes the concept of mental time travel: the ability to re-experience a previously experienced trajectory through continuous dimensions of space and time, and to recall specific events or stimuli along this trajectory. Lesions of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex impair human episodic memory function and impair rat performance in tasks that could be solved by retrieval of trajectories. Recent physiological data suggests a novel model for encoding and retrieval of trajectories, and for associating specific stimuli with specific positions along the trajec

The Association of Perceived Risk for Opioid Overdose and Subsequent Overdose Among a Cohort of Opioid Overdose Survivors Who Use Nonprescribed Opioids.

BACKGROUND: Fatal opioid overdoses in the United States have rapidly increased since 1999. While several risk factors for overdose are known, the association of overdose risk perception with subsequent overdose is not well understood. METHODS: We used data from a randomized trial of a counseling intervention to reduce opioid overdose among overdose survivors who use nonprescribed opioids. Participants were followed up for 16 months with visits every 4 months. At study visits participants were asked how likely they were to overdose in the next 4 months (risk perception) and whether they had ov

Implications of perceived empowering motivational climate on athletes' goal-regulatory processes: A longitudinal analysis.

This study explores how athletes' perceptions of empowering climates can influence athletes' goal regulatory processes over the competitive season. The purpose of this research was to test, using a longitudinal design, the relationship between athletes' perceptions of an empowering climate, goal motives, and goal-directed effort. A total of 112 university athletes (M = 20.90; SD = 2.79) completed a multi-section questionnaire at two time points during the season. Changes in perceptions of an empowering motivational climate positively predicted changes in autonomous goal motives (but not contro

Psychophysical and speech perception studies: a case report on a binaural cochlear implant subject.

Further improvements in speech perception for cochlear implant patients in quiet and in noise should be possible with speech processing strategies using binaural implants. For this reason, presented here is a series of initial psychophysical and speech perception studies on the authors' first binaural cochlear implant patient. For an approximate matching of the places of stimulation on the two sides, the patient usually reported a single percept when the two sides were simultaneously stimulated. Lateralization was strongly influenced by amplitude differences between the electrical stimuli on t

Intrinsic network connectivity and own body perception in gender dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria (GD) is characterized by incongruence between one's identity and gender assigned at birth. The biological mechanisms of GD are unclear. We investigated brain network connectivity patterns involved in own body perception in the context of self in GD. Twenty-seven female-to-male (FtM) individuals with GD, 27 male controls, and 27 female controls underwent resting state fMRI. We compared functional connections within intrinsic connectivity networks involved in self-referential processes and own body perception -default mode network (DMN) and salience network - and visual networks

Ambient AI Scribe Technology and Perceived Documentation Efficiency Among Surgeons: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical documentation demands a significant share of surgeons' time and can contribute to documentation-related burden and burnout. While electronic health records (EHRs) offer accessibility and completeness, they also impose a substantial documentation burden. Ambient AI scribe solutions aim to reduce this burden by capturing patient-clinician dialogue in real time to automate clinical documentation. However, their specific impact on surgical practice remains under-studied. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate surgeons' perceptions of documentation efficiency, documentation timelines

Space, time, and numbers in the right posterior parietal cortex: Differences between response code associations and congruency effects.

The mental representations of space, time, and number magnitude are inherently linked. The right posterior parietal cortex (PPC) has been su … underlying these effects. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that interactions between space and time perception are reflected in congruency effects, but not in an association between time and spatial response codes. Taken together, these results implicate that the congruency between purely perceptual dimensions is processed in PPC areas along the IPS, while t …

Effects of Task-Irrelevant Talker Identity and Continuity on Spatial Selective Attention Under Interruption.

Task-irrelevant features can impact formation of auditory objects and influence the effectiveness of selective attention, including the buildup of attention over time. Using a previously established paradigm exploring the effects of random interruptions on spatial selective attention, this study explores how the task-irrelevant feature of talker identity impacts the buildup of spatial attention and whether it alters the impact of interruptions. Participants performed a sequence recall task in which participants were presented with two competing syllable sequences coming from different spatial
