Adrenal gland imaging with multiplane tomography.

Multiplane tomography can be employed successfully to image the adrenal glands after the intravenous administration of 6 beta-131I-iodomethyl-19-nor cholest-5(10)-en-3 beta-ol (NP-59). The tomographic display allows separation of the adrenal glands from other organs that often obscure the adrenal image when gamma cameras are used and the depth of the adrenal glands may be determined without obtaining lateral views.

Computed tomography in white-matter disease.

CT scans of 11 patients with proved white-matter disease were reviewed and divided into three categories. The demyelinating (secondary) and diffuse sclerosis groups frequently exhibited abnormal intravenous enhancement and mass shift. This made differentiation from inflammatory and neoplastic processes difficult. In the dysmyelinating disorders, pathologically noted diffuse loss of white matter and absence of inflammatory response appeared on the scans as areas of diffuse and decreased density in the centrum semiovale. There was no evidence of abnormal contrast enhancement.

Coronal computed tomography: indications and accuracy.

The application of wide aperture scanners to neuroradiology permits improved anatomic definition and localization of intracranial and intraorbital lesions. Coronal scans are most useful in demonstrating lesions of the skull base and apex, distinguishing between infra- and supratentorial lesions, and in determining if a lesion is intra- or extraaxial. Limitations of coronal scans include discomfort in positioning, high spatial frequency artifacts, and additional radiation exposure.

Computed tomography of pediatric craniofacial sarcoma.

Review of the clinical and roentgenographic findings in 16 children with craniofacial sarcomas has revealed that CT is the most accurate method for delineation of the sarcomas and is indispensable for proper therapy planning and post therapy evaluation. The patients were examined and treated according to a protocol which required a CT examination before any type of therapy and after each mode of therapy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy alone was noted to produce marked reduction in tumor volume. The orbital sarcomas, which are most frequent, are small tumors without bone destructio

Computed tomography with giant intracranial aneurysms.

Five patients with giant intracranial aneurysms were studied by computed tomography. Secondary intracranial changes such as hemorrhage, cerebral infarction and communicating hydrocephalus are easily demonstrated by computed tomography. In addition, computed tomography provides precise information concerning the actual size and location of large but partially thrombosed or calcified aneurysm to better advantage than angiography.

Urological applications of computerized axial tomography.

Computerized tomography (CT scanning) of the chest and abdomen has been used as a diagnostic technique in more than 7,200 patients since 1974, 250 of whom had histological proved disorders of the genitourinary system and retroperitoneum. On the basis of this experience CT scanning has been found to be safe and effective, and offers certain advantages over conventional techniques. The number, extent and content of adrenal and renal mass lesions can be determined with relatively great accuracy. The presence and extent of metastases into the retroperitoneum, liver and chest often can be shown by …

Coronal computed tomography in orbital disease.

Coronal computed tomography (CT) was applied to the diagnosis of orbital disease. With this technique, the size and extent of intraorbital tumors and their relationship to the eyeball, optic nerve, and extraocular muscles were demonstrated, often with information additional to that obtained by the standard axial transverse tomograms. In particular, inferior or superior displacement of the eyeball was clearly revealed. Coronal sections afforded easier comparison with other neuroradiologic examinations. In the evaluation of hyperthyroidism, the extraocular muscles were shown clearly in cross sec…

Brain tumors studied by computerized tomography.

A brief description of the method and clinical application of CT is given. Various features and absorption values of different intracranial neoplasms are described and compared. The effects of CT on other special diagnostic procedures are discussed. It is emphasized that contrast medium enhancement significantly increases the sensitivity and specificity of the technique when applied to patients who have or are suspected of having cerebral neoplasms.

Computed tomography in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

An area of decreased density found with computed tomography corresponded to confluent demyelinative lesions in the brain of a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. Failure of the CT scan to enhance with contrast material together with the clinical picture may enable clinicians to diagnose this subacutely progressive viral demyelinative brain disorder.

Brain 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in COVID 19-associated autoimmune encephalitis: a case report.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated encephalitis is a rare but severe neurological complication. Conventional diagnostic tools, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies, may yield normal results despite significant functional brain impairment. Brain positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) has emerged as a valuable adjunctive imaging modality in such cases. We report the case of a 54-year-old woman with COVID-19 who presented with anosmia, ageusia, and altered behavior. Neurological examinat…

Optical coherence tomography angiography compared with optical coherence tomography for detection of glaucoma progression with high myopia.

Little is known about the change of macular and peripapillary vessel density comparing to macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL) thickness or peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness in high myopic glaucoma in the longitudinal follow-up. A total of 62 glaucoma patients with high myopia (71 eyes) were analyzed over an average follow-up of 2.88 years, with at least four optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging sessions. Among the participants, 47 eyes exhibited stable visual fields, while 24 eyes showed progression. We compared the longitudinal chang…

Deep learning-quantified body composition from positron emission tomography/computed tomography and cardiovascular outcomes: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is a vital diagnostic tool, especially in patients with cardiometabolic syndrome. Low-dose CT scans are routinely performed with PET for attenuation correction and potentially contain valuable data about body tissue composition. Deep learning and image processing were combined to automatically quantify skeletal muscle (SM), bone and adipose tissue from these scans and then evaluate their associations with death or myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: In PET MPI from three sites,…
