Metastatic tumors of the tonsils are rarer than primary tumors. Few cases of metastatic tonsillar tumor have been reported. A 51-year-old man expectorated a portion of a tumor from the left side of the pharynx after an operation for cancer metastatic to the lung. Biopsy revealed that the pharyngeal tumor was rectal cancer (adenocarcinoma) metastatic to the tonsil. To our knowledge, this is the first case of primary rectal cancer metastatic to the tonsil to be reported in Japan. The clinical features of metastatic tonsillar tumor are discussed.

We studied the expression and function of CD27 and CD70, which are reported to play an important role in the T-B cell interaction in tonsillar lymphocytes of patients with chronic tonsillitis. In comparison of CD27 and CD70 in peripheral lymphocytes of each patients, no significant difference was found. We studied 13 tonsils from newborn infants in order to understand the evolution of the microscopical alterations in tonsils of children with … and with no differentiation into primary follicles. Similar cysts have been described in recurrent tonsillitis as a result of focal compression of the lumen of crypts by enlarged lymphoid follicles or abscess. However, our narrowing of the lumen of the crypts was near the surface of the tonsils.

In order to investigate the protective system of human palatine tonsils against the cytotoxic superoxide radicals (O(-)(2)) generated from the oxygen-related bactericidal system, immunohistochemistry and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry were used to detect the distribution and activities of superoxide dismutases (SODs) in tonsils of different related systemic diseases. Immunohistochemistry showed that SODs distribute in extrafollicular lymphatic tissue and crypt epithelium. Modern techniques have reduced the long existing reluctance to perform lingual tonsillectomy. The results of treatment of hyperplasia of the lingual tonsil with the carbon dioxide laser in 32 patients are presented. After exposure with a special endoscope the lingual tonsil can be vaporized or excised under microscopic control with promising results, far superior to the results obtained with other surgical techniques. Since the success rate of the surgery depends on the diagnostic criteria for applying this therapy, a careful selection of patients is essential.

Surgical treatment of the lingual tonsil is seldom performed because problems attributable to chronic lingual tonsillar hypertrophy are infrequently diagnosed. We have reviewed a series of 25 patients with symptoms from enlarged lingual tonsils. The variety of presentation of lingual tonsillar lesions and the methods of surgical treatment are discussed.

A case report is communicated on lymphoepithelial hyperplasia of the tonsil at the base of the tongue. This may be demonstrated during radiological double contrast examination of the oesophagus as a protrusion of the mucosa of the hypopharynx with smooth or nodular relief pattern. Differential diagnosis is necessary especially against malignant neoplasms.
