OBJECTIVES: There are no data comparing coronal leakage of teeth prepared to different apical sizes and obturated with gutta-percha and sealer. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of apical preparation size on the leakage of obturated root canals. Large apical openings are encountered as a result of pulp necrosis in immature teeth, apical resorption, or over-enlargement of the apical foramen. Complete cleaning, shaping, obturation, and apical seal of root canal systems are essential for the success of root canal treatment.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: One hundred twenty-five extracte

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic-periodontal (EP) lesions require both endodontic and periodontal therapies. Impermeable sealing of the root canal system after cleaning and shaping is essential for a successful endodontic treatment. However, complete healing of the hard and soft tissue lesions takes time, and diseased bone, periodontal ligament, and tooth fibrous joints are reported to have an increased failure risk for a given load. Considering that EP lesions may affect the biomechanics of teeth, this finite elemental analysis study aimed to test the effect of root fillings on stress distribution in

AIM: To present a case that used spiral computerized tomography (CT) to locate and successfully remove a fractured endodontic instrument lying beyond the apical foramen using a surgical approach.
SUMMARY: The fracture of an endodontic instrument beyond the apical foramen is rare. In this case report, after an attempt to remove a fractured instrument failed, a multi-slice spiral computerized tomography (MSCT) was used for diagnosis and treatment planning. The fractured segment was precisely located and found in the soft tissue and successfully removed by surgery. For the successful removal of

OBJECTIVES: The mandibular canal (MC) is an important anatomical structure that sometimes incurs injuries. Complications, such as paresthesia, neuropathic pain, and numbness, usually occur and are challenging for patients and dentists to resolve. The relationship of the MC with mandibular posterior teeth is of great clinical importance to avoid damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the proximity of adjacent teeth to the MC in a Western Chinese population using 3D reconstruction and measurements.

INTRODUCTION: Manual linear assessment, a classic method for evaluating orthodontic external root resorption (OERR), has limitations: unreliable dento-osseous junction identification and operator variability, time-consuming measurements, and inability to capture 3-dimensional (3D) morphologic changes.
METHODS: We developed OERR-Net, a deep learning system for objective, real-time OERR linear assessment and 3D visualization using pre and postorthodontic treatment cone-beam computed tomography scans. First, leveraging Transformer architecture, inspired by ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, Calif),

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the influence of soffit preservation on stress distribution in roots of mandibular molars using finite element analysis.
METHODS: An extracted two-rooted mandibular molar was scanned by micro-computed tomography to create 3 models: an intact tooth, a contracted access cavity with partial soffit preservation, and a contracted access cavity without soffit. The models were integrated into a three-dimensional mandibular bone block including cortical and trabecular bone, periodontal ligament, and lamina dura. All regions were initially assumed to be fully tied to

PURPOSE: Anterior alveolar osteodistraction is a common method for enlargement of the dentoalveolar process, and bone-borne distraction devices are hypothesized to avoid the risk of dental tipping and periodontal impairment during distraction. The aim of this study was to objectify this thesis and to determine the reliability of bone-borne osteodistraction of the anterior alveolar process.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 18 consecutive patients who underwent anterior alveolar segmental distraction with a bone-borne distraction device for the treatment of dental crowding or

INTRODUCTION: Current information suggests that the major variation in orthodontic root resorption can be explained by differences in individual predisposition. Our aim was therefore to test the predictive value of the amount of maxillary incisor resorption about 6 and 12 months after bracket placement for the resorption at appliance removal.
METHODS: We measured tooth length of the maxillary incisors on digitally converted periapical radiographs, adjusted for projection errors, made before treatment (T1), about 6 months (T2) and 12 months (T3) after bracket placement, and at the end of activ

BACKGROUND: Apexification for immature permanent teeth with necrotic pulp aims to close the root end without causing canal wall thickening or continuous root lengthening. Traditionally done using calcium hydroxide (CH), recently bioactive materials such as Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) have become a popular alternative due to its superior sealing abilities. While Regenerative endodontic Procedures (REP) offer potential for root development, their outcome remains unpredictable. This case report presents a modified apexification technique using MTA to facilitate continued root end development

INTRODUCTION: In this preliminary study, we investigated early histologic changes of paradental tissues in response to a clear plastic appliance in rats.
METHODS: Fifteen rats were divided into 3 groups. Group I was the untreated controls; group II received a clear plastic appliance made from a model, with the maxillary left first molar repositioned mesially 0.5 mm from the origin; and group III had a closed-coil spring to move the molar mesially. Specimens were prepared in parasagittal sections, and changes in paradental tissues were evaluated on days 1, 4, and 7 by light microscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) is an extremely rare form of bone and soft tissue sarcoma. It occurs mainly in the deep soft tissue of the lower extremities, with few cases reported in the head and neck region. Tumors involving the oral and maxillofacial region (OMFR) and intraosseous examples are rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 52-year-old male with a radiolucent lesion at the apex of the left mandibular second molar tooth with the clinical impression of a periapical granuloma. The patient has a history of SEF of the skull, which was treated by chemotherapy and

Cementoblastoma, a rare odontogenic benign tumor characterized by calcified cementum-like deposits produced by cementoblasts fused with the tooth root, represents a minute proportion of all odontogenic tumors, with a prevalence ranging from less than 1% to 6.2%. We present a case of a 19-year-old female experiencing pain, progressive swelling, and facial asymmetry in the left lower region over the 1 year ago. Physical examination revealed diffuse swelling in the left mandibular area, demonstrating tenderness and bony hardness on palpation. Radiographic findings displayed a giant, well-defined,

OBJECTIVES: Low-level laser treatment has been advocated as a possible treatment for patients with paresthesia. An objectively verified improvement in sensory function is relevant if, at the same time, it is perceived as a subjective improvement by the patient. The aim of this double blind clinical study was to see if low-level laser treatment with a GaAlAs laser (820 nm, Rønvig, Denmark) resulted in objectively verified improvement in sensory function and whether this correlated with the patient's subjective evaluation subsequent to treatment.
STUDY DESIGN: The 13 patients in this study had
