The roots of six anterior maxillary and mandibular teeth were intentionally fractured in three monkeys. The teeth were then rigidly splinted for 12 wk. The healing of the fractured roots was examined clinically, radiographically, and histologically for a period of 6 months. Five of six fracture sites healed by either dense connective tissue or mineralized hard tissue which appeared to enter the fracture sites from the periodontal ligament. The canal spaces in these teeth were reduced substantially by calcific deposits. The remaining pulp tissue appeared vital histologically, but with areas of

AIM: To determine any patient, technique or material factors that were significantly associated with post fracture in metallic post systems.
SUMMARY: Eighty-five fractured metal posts were retrieved over a 5-year period from a total of 84 patients who attended a dental hospital for treatment. A record was kept of the patient's dentition to identify the tooth with the fractured post, the number of teeth present, the excursive guidance scheme and the likely post design and material. Radiographs of 67 of these teeth were available. The presence or absence of a periapical lesion was noted as was

Epidemiological studies have suggested that cola beverage consumption may affect bone metabolism and increase bone fracture risk. Experimental evidence linking cola beverage consumption to deleterious effects on bone is lacking. Herein, we investigated whether cola beverage consumption from weaning to early puberty delays the rate of reparative bone formation inside the socket of an extracted tooth in rats. Twenty male Wistar rats received cola beverage (cola group) or tap water (control group) ad libitum from the age of 23 days until tooth extraction at 42 days and euthanasia 2 and 3 weeks la

Osteoporosis, an age-related condition, is defined as a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. It is considered the most common bone metabolic disease and it constitutes a major public health problem. Several studies indicate that osteoporosis may be related to decreased oral bone density and alveolar bone loss. In osteoporotic patients, uncoupling of bone resorption and bone formation has taken place. Both bone resorption and bone formation are accelerated, and

Restoring endodontically treated teeth with extensive coronal loss often necessitates the use of post and core systems, with fiber posts increasingly favored for their biomechanical compatibility with natural dentin. This case report presents the clinical use of prefabricated glass fiber posts and a resin composite core to rehabilitate a severely damaged maxillary anterior tooth. A 24-year-old male reported with trauma-induced fracture of tooth #11, leaving it unsuitable for conventional restorative approaches. The treatment plan included root canal therapy followed by placement of a fiber pos

Museum skull specimens from 224 Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were examined macroscopically using an established protocol for examination of … . Matthew Island, Alaska, in 1963. As in other canid species, periodontitis, attrition/abrasion and tooth fractures are common in the Arctic fox, while TMJ pathology is rare. Loss of tooth crown substance probably reflects the influence of diet, interspecific and conspecific aggression and oral trauma due to trapping and hunting methods. The high prevalence of pe …

This case report shows an autotransplantation of the lower right cryopreserved third molar into the extraction socket of the lower right first molar. Due to deep caries of the lower right first molar, the mesial root of this tooth was extracted. The patient asked to keep the distal root of the lower right first molar even if the root can survive only for a short period. So, a fixed partial denture supported by the lower right second premolar and the distal root of the lower right first molar was set. However, it was supposed that the distal root of the lower right first molar as an abutment to

This case describes a previously unreported complication of maxillary canine root canal therapy in a cat. A 5-year-old Russian Blue cat was presented with a complicated crown fracture (pulp exposure) of its left maxillary canine tooth (204). To salvage the tooth, root canal therapy was initiated but not completed due to hemorrhage within the canal. The procedure was staged. On recovery from the procedure, unilateral facial swelling and corneal ulceration were observed. This was consistent with retrograde passage of sodium hypochlorite through the nasolacrimal duct, inducing chemical injury to

Crown-root fractures are complex traumatic injuries that require multidisciplinary management and afford uncertain prognosis. The purpose of this clinical article was to report the case of crown-root fracture where a multidisciplinary approach was successfully executed. A 10-year-old male patient who suffered a complicated crown-root fracture on a permanent maxillary central incisor was treated using an intentional 180°-rotation replantation technique, followed by endodontic therapy and restoration with resin composite. Two years after the initial treatment, the case was stable and the tooth w

Dens evaginatus is a rare dental anomaly characterized by the development of a tubercle on the occlusal surface of the tooth and can cause pulpitis, pulp necrosis, and periapical periodontitis due to tubercular fracture or attrition. Unlike with caries, pain caused by dens evaginatus may manifest itself in a distant location. Therefore, diagnosing the cause of that pain may prove problematic. Dens evaginatus usually occurs in the mandibular premolars. We report a successfully treated case in which dens evaginatus was difficult to diagnose due to distant radiation of pulpitis-induced pain. This

Fracture of the maxillary tuberosity sometimes can happen when pneumatization of the maxillary sinus extends between the roots of upper molars. Some factors may lead to this complication including prominent or curved roots, chronic periapical infection, hypercementosis, root ankylosis and tooth fusion. This paper reports a case with fracture of the maxillary tuberosity following extraction of an upper first molar in general dental practice. Prevention from any complication during extractions of maxillary molars with large antral enlargement is possible with careful preoperative examination and

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between patient characteristics and reasons for extraction of permanent teeth.
METHODS: 5131 dentists were selected from the list of the membership directory of the Japan Dental Association by systematic random selection. The dentists were asked to record the reason for each extraction of permanent teeth during a period from February 1 to 7, 2005. Reasons for tooth extraction were assigned to five groups: caries, fracture of teeth weakened by caries or endodontics, periodontal diseases, orthodontics and other reasons. We u

This study was performed to report the dental abnormalities encountered in immature dogs with a history of mandibular fracture. Dogs were included in the study if mandibular fractures were diagnosed by means of oral examination and diagnostic imaging, they were treated with non-invasive or minimally invasive methods, and there was a follow-up examination of at least 90 days after the initial presentation with the last follow-up visit occurring at 6 months of age or older. Eleven dogs met the inclusion criteria. Dental abnormalities occurred exclusively in those dogs that had sustained fracture

We report on two undiagnosed horizontal root fractures of two maxillary right central incisors in two different patients caused by dental trauma which occurred several years ago. These fractures were discovered during a routine full-mouth radiographic examination. While, in case one, the fracture was located in the middle-third of the root, it was in the cervical-third of the root in case two. The fractured teeth were observed to have healed spontaneously without any sign or symptom, and tested as vital to electric pulp test.
