Plasticity in visual cortex is disrupted in a mouse model of tauopathy.

Alzheimer's disease and other dementias are thought to underlie a progressive impairment of neural plasticity. Previous work in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease shows pronounced changes in artificially-induced plasticity in hippocampus, perirhinal and prefrontal cortex. However, it is not known how degeneration disrupts intrinsic forms of brain plasticity. Here we characterised the impact of tauopathy on a simple form of intrinsic plasticity in the visual system, which allowed us to track plasticity at both long (days) and short (minutes) timescales. We studied rTg4510 transgenic mice at ea

NaGdF4:Yb/Er nanoparticles of different sizes for tracking mesenchymal stem cells and their effects on cell differentiation.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) hold great promise in the field of regenerative medicine, and great effort goes into investigating the mechanisms underlying their therapeutic effects. These investigations necessitate the development of sensitive and reliable methods of tracking stem cells. As the unique physicochemical properties of β-NaGdF4:Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles make them highly efficient fluorescent probes, they could be utilized to track stem cells through bio-imaging. However, their biocompatibility constitutes a major challenge to their use in biomedical applications. In this pap

Understanding whole person systems in brain-gut-microbiome research through ultra-high-field MRI imaging.

The brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) axis regulates interoception, metabolism, and immunity, with dysfunction linked to IBS, obesity, and mood disorders. Ultra-high-field (UHF) MRI advances neural imaging, enhancing resolution of vagal and spinal circuits mediating gut-brain communication. UHF enables real-time tracking of interventions like vagus nerve stimulation and probiotics, linking microbiome shifts to neural adaptations. Despite challenges like signal distortions, innovations in coil design are improving imaging fidelity. Integrating neuroimaging with multi-omic profiling fosters a systems-l

Top applications of dermatologic ultrasonography that can modify management.

Dermatologic ultrasonography is a new field that has been growing exponentially in the last 10 years. It has multiple applications that can modify patient management, such as the assessment of benign and malignant cutaneous tumors, vascular anomalies, inflammatory dermatologic entities, aesthetic complications, and nail lesions. Compared with other imaging techniques such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography has the highest axial spatial resolution and has benefited from the development of high- and ultra-high-frequency probes that could even reach 70 MHz. The

Clinical Application of Diffusion Tensor Imaging for a Brachial Plexus Injury.

Brachial plexus injuries are commonly diagnosed clinically, as conventional imaging has a low sensitivity. In recent years, diffusion tensor imaging has established a clinical role in the study of the central nervous system and, while still presenting some limitations due to the technical complexity of the acquisition method, is showing promising results when applied to peripheral nerves. Moreover, deterministic fiber tracking with the Euler's method and multishell acquisition are two novel advances in the field which contribute to enhancing the reliability of the technique reducing the respir

Effect of railway engines emission on the micromorphology of some field plants.

Plant species as indicator is the most common method used to indicate the effects of pollution on plants. However, the present study explores the usage of micromorphological parameters of the plant species as the indicators. The plants selected for the present studies included Croton bonplandianum, Cannabis sativa and Calotropis procera. The parameters examined were (1) abnormalities of stomata, (2) number of stomata per unit area, (3) number of epidermal cells per unit area, (4) stomatal index. The present studies on these field plants revealed that diesel engines emission caused appreciable

Why drivers rush into "safe-looking" short tunnels: the misleading effect of spatially intervisible.

OBJECTIVE: The access zone of short tunnels exhibits an abnormally high accident rate, yet the underlying environmental causes remain unclear. This study identifies the key environmental feature behind this safety paradox and explains how it induces abnormal speed control. METHODS: We collected eye movement, driving performance, and video data from 30 drivers in 18 tunnel approach zones using a combined field and subjective approach. Subjective perception experiments identified "spatial intervisibility", the ability to see through the tunnel from the approach, as the critical feature. We comp

MultiCam: On-the-fly Multi-Camera Pose Estimation Using Spatiotemporal Overlaps of Known Objects.

Multi-camera dynamic Augmented Reality (AR) applications require a camera pose estimation to leverage individual information from each camera in one common system. This can be achieved by combining contextual information, such as markers or objects, across multiple views. While commonly cameras are calibrated in an initial step or updated through the constant use of markers, another option is to leverage information already present in the scene, like known objects. Another downside of marker-based tracking is that markers have to be tracked inside the field-of-view (FoV) of the cameras. To ove

Enhanced Semantic Alignment in Transformer Tracking via Position Learning and Force-Directed Attention.

In the field of visual object tracking, one-stream pipelines have become the mainstream framework due to their efficient integration of feature extraction and relationship modeling. However, existing methods still face the issue of semantic misalignment: firstly, during feature extraction, the interaction of position encoding between the template and the search image branches leads to a misalignment between feature semantics and position encoding; secondly, traditional attention mechanisms indiscriminately sum the weights of various features, overlooking the complex interactions between them.

Quantifying time-varying wind-driven effects on matched-field localization: Mechanisms and a physics-coupled Bayesian approacha).

Matched-field processing is highly sensitive to environmental mismatch, yet most robust formulations emphasize static uncertainties more than time-evolving environmental forcing. This study examines a representative low-frequency shallow-water scenario in which wind-driven mixed-layer deepening reshapes the upper-ocean sound-speed profile and perturbs modal horizontal wavenumbers, producing accumulated phase errors, ambiguity-surface distortion, and systematic range bias. To organize these effects beyond a single operating point, a conditional modal phase-spread analysis is introduced to show

Shadow Control of a fully modular prosthetic arm with 3-DoF Shoulder.

Shoulder amputation is a complex condition that significantly challenges prosthetic design and control. Here we propose a master-slave control paradigm to operate a modular whole-arm prosthesis (HANNES Arm). Our solution uses Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) to estimate the movements of the intact arm, which are then replicated in the prosthetic arm. The use of quaternion representations for the kinematics of both human and prosthetic arm kinematics ensures computationally efficient and singularity-free motion tracking and control. The algorithm was validated through simulations, integrating

Significant Environmental Factors in the Drift of Electrical Properties in Conductive Nano-Composite Sensors for Biomechanical Motion-Tracking.

Wearable nanocomposite stretch sensors are an exciting new development in biomaterials for biomechanical motion-tracking technology, with applications in the treatment of low back pain, knee rehabilitation, fetal movement tracking, and other fields. When strained, the resistance of the low-cost sensors is reduced, enabling human motion to be monitored using a suitable sensor array. However, current sensor technologies have exhibited significant drift, in the form of increased electrical resistance, if left stored in typical room conditions. The purpose of the present work was to evaluate the i

Sybil Attacks Detection and Traceability Mechanism Based on Beacon Packets in Connected Automobile Vehicles.

Connected Automobile Vehicles (CAVs) enable cooperative driving and traffic management by sharing traffic information between them and other vehicles and infrastructures. However, malicious vehicles create Sybil vehicles by forging multiple identities and sharing false location information with CAVs, misleading their decisions and behaviors. The existing work on defending against Sybil attacks has almost exclusively focused on detecting Sybil vehicles, ignoring the traceability of malicious vehicles. As a result, they cannot fundamentally alleviate Sybil attacks. In this work, we focus on trac

Distributions of energy imparted to a micro-volume by secondary charged fragments of nuclear interactions in space radiation field.

The field of cosmic radiation at low-Earth orbit (LEO) has a complex composition. It always contains a component of secondary charged particles, formed by the products of nuclear interactions of the primary high-energy radiation with the nuclei of spacecraft's shielding material, electronic components and biological matter on board. Generation of this secondary radiation can be observed in some track detectors in the form of "stars" formed by tracks-fragments with a common vertex. The energy absorbed by the medium in the region adjacent to the interaction vertex can reach abnormally high value

Improving Performance of the Human Pupil Orbit Model (HPOM) Estimation Method for Eye-Gaze Tracking.

Eye-gaze direction-tracking technology is used in fields such as medicine, education, engineering, and gaming. Stability, accuracy, and precision of eye-gaze direction-tracking are demanded with simultaneous upgrades in response speed. In this study, a method is proposed to improve the speed with decreases in the system load and precision in the human pupil orbit model (HPOM) estimation method. The new method was proposed based on the phenomenon that the minor axis of the elliptical-deformed pupil always pointed toward the rotational center presented in various eye-gaze direction detection stu

Flow profiles near receding three-phase contact lines: influence of surfactants.

The dynamics of wetting and dewetting is largely determined by the velocity field near the contact lines. For water drops it has been observed that adding surfactant decreases the dynamic receding contact angle even at a concentration much lower than the critical micelle concentration (CMC). To better understand why surfactants have such a drastic effect on drop dynamics, we constructed a dedicated setup on an inverted microscope, in which an aqueous drop is held stationary while the transparent substrate is moved horizontally. Using astigmatism particle tracking velocimetry, we track the 3D d

Structured Back Focal Plane Interferometry (SBFPI).

Back focal plane interferometry (BFPI) is one of the most straightforward and powerful methods for achieving sub-nanometer particle tracking precision at high speed (MHz). BFPI faces technical challenges that prohibit tunable expansion of linear detection range with minimal loss to sensitivity, while maintaining robustness against optical aberrations. In this paper, we devise a tunable BFPI combining a structured beam (conical wavefront) and structured detection (annular quadrant photodiode). This technique, which we termed Structured Back Focal Plane Interferometry (SBFPI), possesses three ke

Phase I study of a new tablet-based image guided surgical system in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy is, currently, the most commonly utilized procedure for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. Image-guided surgical systems have been proposed in the literature as a valuable tool for the better utilization of the preoperative data in theatre. In this Phase 1 trial, we tested the feasibility and safety of a new, cutting-edge tablet-based surgical imaging system designed for robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). It utilizes the preoperative MRI images of the prostate, mapping them intra-operatively, real time to the patient by magnetic tracking

Head and Eye Control in Persons with Low Vision during Urban Navigation.

Low vision involves a range of visual impairments that significantly impact daily activities, particularly navigation in urban environments. Individuals with low vision often develop adaptive strategies to compensate for visual deficits, relying on head movements to bring objects into their remaining functional field of vision. Research suggests that they focus on road surface markings and building edges to aid in wayfinding and collision avoidance. However, urban navigation presents additional challenges, as obstacles, moving hazards, and tripping dangers may enter their visual loss field, in
