Heavy metal levels, health risks, and potential sources in karst soils of southwestern China.

Distinguishing natural geochemical variability from anthropogenic influences is important for interpreting heavy metals in karst soils. This study evaluated As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in surface soils of Longli County, Guizhou Province, using the Nemerow pollution index, Monte Carlo-based health risk assessment, and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF). Mean concentrations were 17.2, 103, 19.9, 23.9, 23.0, and 82.7 mg/kg, respectively. Five metals had mean concentrations below the corresponding Guizhou provincial background values, while Cr was only slightly higher than its background value (95

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Promote Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition and Classical to Basal Subtype Shift in Pancreatic Cancer.

Environmental exposures represent a significant health hazard, which cumulatively may be responsible for up to 2/3 of all chronic non-communicable disease and associated mortality (Global Burden of Disease Study and The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health), which has given rise to a new concept of the exposome: the sum of environmental factors in every individual's experience. Noise is part of the exposome and is increasingly being investigated as a health risk factor impacting neurological, cardiometabolic, endocrine, and immune health. Beyond the well-characterized effects of high-inte

Characterization of tire and road wear microplastics and phthalates in inhalable PM10 road Dust: Implications for urban air pollution.

Road dust (RD) is a major contributor to urban environmental pollution. Among its constituents, tire and road wear microplastics (TRWMPs) and phthalates are of increasing concern due to their adverse impacts on human health and ecosystems. This study presents the first integrated analysis of TRWMPs and phthalates in inhalable PM10 RD, collected from industrial and residential areas in Seoul, Korea. Mean TRWMP concentrations were higher in industrial areas (18 mg/g) than in residential areas (16 mg/g), reflecting the influence of truck-bus radial (TBR) vehicles, which have greater tire wear emi

Predominant DNMT and TET mediate effects of allergen on the human bronchial epithelium in a controlled air pollution exposure study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data show that traffic-related air pollution contributes to the increasing prevalence and severity of asthma. DNA methylation (DNAm) changes may elucidate adverse health effects of environmental exposures. OBJECTIVES: We sought to assess the effects of allergen and diesel exhaust (DE) exposures on global DNAm and its regulation enzymes in human airway epithelium. METHODS: A total of 11 participants, including 7 with and 4 without airway hyperresponsiveness, were recruited for a randomized, double-blind crossover study. Each participant had 3 exposures: filtered ai

Effect of living close to a main road on asthma, allergy, lung function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

BACKGROUND: A number of epidemiological studies suggest that the risk of asthma is increased among those living in close proximity to major roads. However, the evidence is inconsistent, and effects on asthma and related respiratory and allergic conditions using objective measures such as lung function and allergic sensitisation have not been widely investigated. METHODS: In 1995, 1996 and 2001 data on respiratory and allergic disease, along with demographic and lifestyle factors, were collected in 59 285 children (aged 2-16 years) and adults as part of the Health Survey for England, a nationa

Places and health: a qualitative study to explore how older women living alone perceive the social and physical dimensions of their neighbourhoods.

There is growing interest in the impact that neighbourhood environment might have on the health of older people. Although the number of older Australian women, particularly those living alone, is projected to increase in coming decades, their experiences of neighbourhood have not been exclusively examined. The aims of this paper are: (1) to explore, from the perspective of these women, the social and physical dimensions of neighbourhoods and (2) to investigate variation in these accounts according to whether women lived in areas of higher or lower socioeconomic status. Twenty women aged betwee

Ambient Outdoor Air Pollution and Risk of Tumors of the Central Nervous System.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The incidence of CNS tumors has increased over the recent decades, and few risk factors are identified. Ultrafine particles (UFPs) can cross the blood-brain barrier and thereby cause direct intracranial exposure. The aim of this cohort study was to study the possible relationship between air pollution exposure including UFPs and tumors of the CNS. METHODS: The study base included all Danish adults (aged 20 years and older) identified from nationwide registries since 1991. We defined the end point as the first, primary CNS tumor identified in the Danish Cancer Regist

Ambient aromatic hydrocarbons and prostate cancer: mechanistic evidence linking benzene and PAH exposure to tumor progression.

Prostate cancer (PCa) remains one of the most common malignancies in men worldwide, yet modifiable environmental contributors remain incompletely defined. Aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs), particularly benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are widespread pollutants in ambient air, occupational settings, tobacco smoke, and high-temperature cooking emissions. In this review, we synthesize evidence from population-based and occupational epidemiology, dietary exposure proxies, animal carcinogenesis models, organoid systems, and cell-based mechanistic studies to assess the biological plau

Improvements in Air Quality and Health Outcomes Among California Medicaid Enrollees Due to Goods Movement Actions.

INTRODUCTION: In 2006, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and local air quality management districts implemented an Emission Reduction Plan for Ports and Goods Movement program (referred to hereinafter as GM policy actions) (CARB 2006). The GM policy actions comprise approximately 200 actions with an estimated investment value of $6 to $10 billion. These actions targeted the major sources and polluters related to goods movements, such as highways; ports and railyard trucks; ship fuel and shore power; cargo equipment; and locomotives. These actions aimed to reduce total statewide domesti

Update on environmental determinants of allergic diseases.

This review article summarizes key advances from October 2022 to December 2025 on the link between environmental exposures and allergic diseases, with an emphasis on early-life exposures and mechanistic insights relevant to disease prevention and therapy. Allergic diseases have genetic and environmental origins. As to the latter, predisposition to allergy is thought to arise as a result of increased exposure to harmful environmental factors that act as immune adjuvants for allergens, and reduced exposure to beneficial factors that induce allergen tolerance. Harmful factors include air pollutan

Prenatal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon exposure and neurodevelopment among children in Puerto Rico.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widespread environmental contaminants produced through the combustion of organic matter, with sources ranging from traffic pollution to diet. Although PAH exposure has been associated with adverse health effects, few studies have examined its impact on neurodevelopmental delay (NDD). Thus, our study aims to investigate the effect of prenatal PAH exposure on the odds of NDD. We measured 7 hydroxylated PAH metabolites in spot urine samples collected up to three times during pregnancy in the PROTECT birth cohort. NDD was identified using score cutoffs f

Development and Evaluation of the R-LINE Model Algorithms to Account for Chemical Transformation in the Near-road Environment.

With increased urbanization, there is increased mobility leading to higher amount of traffic-related activity on a global scale. Most NOx from combustion sources (about 90-95%) are emitted as NO, which is then readily converted to NO2 in the ambient air, while the remainder is emitted largely as NO2. Thus, the bulk of ambient NO2 is formed due to secondary production in the atmosphere, and which R-LINE cannot predict given that it can only model the dispersion of primary air pollutants. NO2 concentrations near major roads are appreciably higher than those measured at monitors in existing netwo

Higher plants as bioindicators of sulphur dioxide emissions in urban environments.

The evaluation of certain vascular plants that grow in the city of Madrid as biomonitors of SO(2) air pollution in urban environments has been carried out. Total concentration of sulphur in leaves of the chosen higher plants as well as other parameters in close relation to this contaminant (visible injury symptoms, chlorophyll a- and b-content and peroxidase activity) have been determined in order to study the spatial distribution and temporal changes in SO(2) deposition. Results obtained show that coniferous species such as Pinus pinea, were more sensitive to SO(2) atmospheric concentration t

Exposure to nitrogen dioxide and the risk of thyroid disorders: Two nationwide population-based studies in the UK and China.

BACKGROUND: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a major traffic-related air pollutant, is associated with adverse health effects; however, its relationship with thyroid disorders remains poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations between long-term NO2 exposure and thyroid-related outcomes in two large population-based studies from the UK and China. METHODS: In the UK Biobank, annual NO2 concentrations at baseline residential addresses were estimated using land-use regression models, and incident thyroid disorders were identified from ICD-10-codes in linked hospital inpatient record

Altitudinal and seasonal differences in PM2.5 sources, secondary formation, and particle mixing states in the basin-plateau transition zone of Southwest China.

To explore the evolutionary characteristics of atmospheric pollution in the transition zone from basins to plateaus in southwest China, this study analyzed the chemical composition and sources of PM2.5 during summer and winter, as well as the wintertime evolution of single particles, in two cities at different altitudes in this area, i.e., Chengdu (500 m a.s.l.) and Kangding (2500 m a.s.l.). We found that the PM2.5 concentrations were higher in Chengdu (winter: 79.4 ± 27.7 μg m‒3, summer: 29.1 ± 10.2 μg m‒3) than in Kangding (winter: 15.2 ± 5.1 μg m‒3, summer: 8.1 ± 2.4 μg m‒3), whereas water-

Exposomal research in the context of birth cohorts: What have they taught us?

OBJECTIVE: To review birth cohorts with an exposomal approach and their key outcomes and challenges. Exposome encompasses all human environmental exposures from conception onward. The impact of environmental exposures is greatest in critical stages of life, including fetal and early childhood. Birth cohorts provide a good study setting to assess exposome in the sensitive periods of life. Here, we review birth cohorts with an exposomal approach and their key outcomes and challenges. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE was searched for birth cohorts that have used an exposomal approach. STUDY SELECTIONS: Re
