Biophysical and stabilization studies of the Chlamydia trachomatis mouse pneumonitis major outer membrane protein.

Native Chlamydia trachomatis mouse pneumonitis major outer membrane protein (nMOMP) induces effective protection against genital infection in a mouse challenge model. The conformation of nMOMP is crucial to confer this protective immunity. To achieve a better understanding of the conformational behavior and stability of nMOMP, a number of spectroscopic techniques are employed to characterize the secondary structure (circular dichroism), tertiary structure (intrinsic fluorescence) and aggregation properties (static light scattering and optical density) as a function of pH (3-8) and temperature

Efficient lithium recovery from spent ternary lithium-ion batteries via sulfuric acid roasting: Reaction mechanisms and gas emission control.

The increasing demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has introduced significant challenges related to efficient and environmentally sustainable lithium recycling. Recovering cathode materials from spent LIBs via sulfuric acid roasting and subsequent leaching requires a comprehensive understanding of reaction mechanisms and gas emission behaviors to facilitate industrial application. In this study, thermodynamic calculations were conducted using HSC 6.0 software, and real-time gas evolution was analyzed through thermogravimetric mass spectrometry (TG-MS). Gas products were further identified

First-principles multiscale modeling of cerebral hemodynamics enables personalized predictions of human brain temperature.

Computational bioheat modeling offers a powerful approach for characterizing brain temperature when direct measurements are limited. We developed a multiscale biophysical model with conservation of mass, momentum, and energy across all spatial scales to predict human brain temperature and compared the temperature maps with a previously developed model without global momentum conservation and in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry. Subject-specific brain anatomy obtained from MR images was incorporated into bioheat equations, integrating physiological parameters such as metabolic heat and

Mitochondrial calcium buffering depends upon temperature and is associated with hypothermic neuroprotection against hypoxia-ischemia injury.

Hypothermia (HT) is a standard of care in the management of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI). However, therapeutic mechanisms of HT are not well understood. We found that at the temperature of 32°C, isolated brain mitochondria exhibited significantly greater resistance to an opening of calcium-induced permeability transition pore (mPTP), compared to 37°C. Mitochondrial calcium buffering capacity (mCBC) was linearly and inversely dependent upon temperature (25°C-37°C). Importantly, at 37°C cyclosporine A did not increase mCBC, but significantly increased mCBC at lower temperature. Because mPT

Low-Temperature Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction Grown Anatase TiO2 Nanocrystalline Films for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cell and Gas Sensor Applications.

A low-temperature (90 °C) and directly grown anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocrystalline film using successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) for perovskite solar cell and gas sensor applications. TiO2 nanocrystalline electron transfer layer (ETL) improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells due to faster charge transport kinetics as well as slower charge recombination process. The optimized TiO2 nanocrystalline ETL (15 L) demonstrates as high as ~10% PCE with a short circuit current density of 18.0 mA/cm2, open circuit voltage of 0.81 V and fill fa

Phase transition and chirality switching of dibenzopentacene on Pb(111) surface driven by Coulomb expansion.

The dibenzopentacene (DBPen) molecules on the Pb(111) substrate have been investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Under the influence of an electric field, DBPen molecules undergo the phase transitions between the 2D mobile phase and the close-packed phase, as well as point and organizational chirality switching. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the electric field significantly modulates the charge transfer from the substrate to the molecules and induces the Coulomb expansion of the molecular lattice, resulting in phase transitions and chirality switchin

Wetting interfacial diagram for equal-sized binary Lennard-Jones fluid mixtures.

We explore the wetting behavior along all possible three-phase lines of equal-sized Lennard-Jones fluid binary mixtures via direct coexistence molecular dynamics simulations. We build a wetting interfacial diagram in which partial, perfect, first-order, and second-order wetting transition regions are characterized, along with their corresponding wetting transition temperatures for Type II and Type III mixtures, according to the van Konynenburg and Scott classification. By analyzing the fluid molecular interactions, we reveal the driving forces behind the different wetting behaviors and discuss…

Microcanonical inflection-point analysis via parametric curves and its relation to the zeros of the partition function.

In statistical physics, phase transitions are arguably among the most extensively studied phenomena. In the computational approach to this field, the development of algorithms capable of estimating entropy across the entire energy spectrum in a single execution has highlighted the efficacy of microcanonical inflection point analysis, while Fisher's zeros technique has re-emerged as a powerful methodology for investigating these phenomena. This paper presents an alternative protocol for analyzing phase transitions using a parametrization of the entropy function in the microcanonical ensemble. W

Tin based organic-inorganic hybrid semiconductors with reversible phase transition and dielectric anomaly.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials with perovskite structure have recently attracted tremendous interest due to their structural tunability and rich functional properties, such as phase transition and photoelectric properties. Within this context, two discrete tin-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds [(FMBA)2SnCl6] (1) and [(FMBA)2SnBr6] (2) were prepared by the reaction of 3-fluoro-N-methylbenzylamine (FMBA) with SnX4 (X = Cl, Br) in the corresponding concentrated halogen acids HX. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric measurements showed that both compounds underwent rev

Electronic and vibrational spectroscopy of cis-beta-[CrCl(2)(1,4,7,11-tetrazaundecane)chromium(III) perchlorate.

The sharp-line absorption spectrum of cis-beta-[CrCl(2)(2,2,3-tet)]ClO(4) (2,2,3-tet: 1,4,7,11-tetraazaundecane) has been measured between 13,000 and 16,000 cm(-1) at 5K. The 77K emission, 298 K infrared and visible spectra have also been measured. The zero-phonon band in the highly resolved absorption spectrum splits into four components. The vibrational intervals of the electronic ground state were determined from the far-infrared and emission spectra. The 10 electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions were assigned. Using the observed transitions, a ligand field anal

Influence of Temperature and Osmolytes on Conformational Dynamics of Alpha Synuclein.

Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) is an intrinsically disordered protein (IDP) associated with amyloid formation in neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. Disease progression is linked to the transition of α-syn from native to misfolded conformations, although the mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. An effective method for investigating protein dynamics is native mass spectrometry, specifically when coupled with ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) to examine differences in the shape and size of various analytes. Intramolecular H-Migration Kinetics of •OOQOOH Radicals for KHP Formation During Low-Temperature Oxidation of Alkylcyclohexanes.

Alkylcyclohexanes are vital components of aviation kerosene. Intramolecular H-migration of •OOQOOH radicals controls ketohydroperoxide (KHP) formation, the primary pathway responsible for low-temperature chain-branching during low-temperature oxidation. Available chemical kinetic models for alkylcyclohexanes generally lack directly computed kinetic data for H-migration reactions of •OOQOOH in cyclic fuels; relevant rate constants are commonly transferred from analogous alkane reactions, introducing systematic uncertainties in low-temperature ignition predictions. In this work, quantum chemical

Temperature perturbation studies of sarcoplasmic reticulum from malignant hyperthermia pig muscle.

The effects of varying temperatures from 25 degrees to 37 degrees C on calcium binding characteristics of sarcoplasmic reticulum from malignant hyperthermia-susceptible (MHS) and control pig muscle were examined. Two groups of MHS pigs were included: those with high susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (MHS group) and a cross-bred, less susceptible group (MHX). At 25 degrees C, calcium binding was lower for MHS than for controls and MHX. As temperature was increased by 2 degrees C jumps, calcium binding decreased in all sarcoplasmic reticulum fractions. At 35 degrees C a sharp decrease in

Psychophysical study of stinging pain evoked by brief freezing of superficial skin and ensuing short-lasting changes in sensations of cool and cold pain.

Psychophysical methods were used to investigate pain in human subjects elicited by controlled freezing of the skin using a novel vortex thermode. When cooling stimuli delivered with a small thermode (7 mm diameter) exceeded the normal cold pain threshold into the sub-zero temperature range (-5 to -11 degrees C), all subjects reported an intense, sharp stinging pain sensation which occurred suddenly and was readily differentiated from normal cold pain. The onset of this stinging 'freezing' pain was closely correlated with a sudden increase in skin temperature beneath the thermode of 4.77+/-0.86

Explanation of the colossal detonation sensitivity of silicon pentaerythritol tetranitrate (Si-PETN) explosive.

DFT calculations have identified the novel rearrangement shown here for decomposition of the Si derivative of the PETN explosive [PentaErythritol TetraNitrate (PETN), C(CH(2)ONO(2))(4)] that explains the very dramatic increase in sensitivity observed experimentally. The critical difference is that Si-PETN allows a favorable five-coordinate transition state in which the new Si-O and C-O bonds form simultaneously, leading to a transition state barrier of 33 kcal/mol (it is 80 kcal/mol for PETN) and much lower than the normal O-NO(2) bond fission observed in other energetic materials (approximate

Observation of Hexagonal Close-Packed Water Ice at Conditions in Ice Giant Planetary Interiors.

Using synchrotron x-ray diffraction in laser-heated diamond anvil cells, we report the observation of a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) phase of water ice at high pressure and temperature conditions. Above 200 GPa and 1800 K, the hcp phase becomes dominant upon entering the superionic regime, as evidenced by anomalous thermal expansion. Observations are consistent with the hcp phase becoming thermodynamically more stable than the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase via a martensitic transition extending across the 130-200 GPa pressure range, within the superionic regime. Hcp ice is also observed to e
