Personality moderates the predictive value of serum serotonin for antidepressant remission in depressive disorders.

Blood-based biomarkers such as peripheral serotonin (5-HT) hold promise for predicting antidepressant response in depression, but findings have been inconsistent. Personality traits linked to serotonergic function may moderate this relationship. This study examined whether personality type (PT) moderates the relationship between baseline serum serotonin (s5-HT) levels and antidepressant remission at 12 weeks. In a prospective, naturalistic study, 1086 outpatients with depressive disorders received stepwise pharmacotherapy. PT was classified as resilient or vulnerable using cluster analysis of

Antisocial and related disorders in a southern community. An application of grade of membership analysis.

Symptoms of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) and of psychiatric conditions reported to be related to ASPD were subjected to grade of membership analysis, a relatively new procedure for medical classification, to identify the pure types that would empirically emerge in the absence of prior assumptions about the clustering of those symptoms. The sample consists of 914 respondents who participated in the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program at the North Carolina site. Symptom and diagnostic data were obtained using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule. Seven pure types emerged from the gr

Experimental analysis of the impact of body comparison on non-clinical women.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Two experimental studies examined the impact that body comparison has on women's body satisfaction and self-esteem. The two studies differed in the use of a human comparator or an avatar (non-human) comparator. The independent variables were the type of body comparison (upward, downward and neutral) and the perceived personality of the comparator. METHODS: Each study used a within-participant design. Participants compared themselves to images of women or avatars (previously rated as 'attractive', 'neutral' or 'unattractive'), with an accompanying 'positive' or negat

A comparison of psychosocial risk factors between 3 groups of cardiovascular disease patients referred for outpatient cardiac rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined psychosocial risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) between diagnostic groups of CVD patients. We compared levels of depression, anxiety, hostility, exhaustion, positive affect, and social support, and the prevalence of type D personality between patient groups with a primary diagnosis of coronary heart disease (CHD), chronic heart failure (CHF), or peripheral arterial disease (PAD). METHODS: We examined 548 CHD patients, 105 CHF patients, and 79 PAD patients who completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the cynical hostility subscale of th

Coronary-prone behavior. Type A behavior revisited.

On the basis of prospective population studies that found a relationship between Type A behavior and cardiac morbidity and mortality independent of traditional risk factors, Type A behavior was declared a risk factor for the development of coronary heart disease. However, subsequent studies of individuals with multiple risk factors or established cardiovascular disease failed to support this association consistently. Attempts to identify toxic subcomponents of Type A behavior have supported an association between hostility and cardiac morbidity and mortality. There is evidence that Type A men

Expression Study of NDUFS1, NDUFV1, and NDUFV2 in Schizophrenia and Paranoid Personality Disorder : Role of Mitochondrial Complex I in SCZ and PPD.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a major psychiatric disorder with unclear etiology and biological diagnosis. Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is a type-A personality disorder characterized by paranoia and generalized mistrust. The etiology and molecular mechanisms of SCZ and PPD are not clarified. The present study aimed to examine the expression alteration of three major genes of mitochondrial complex I in the peripheral blood of patients with SCZ and PPD, and its correlations with clinical features of patients, especially the five major personality traits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

Type A behavior and marital interaction: hostile-dominant responses during conflict.

Previous research has indicated that the risk conferred by men's Type A versus B behavior depends, in part, on the personality characteristics of their spouses. In the present study of 60 married couples, we found that couples consisting of two Structured Interview-defined Type A's showed a larger increase in hostile/dominant behavior during discussions of marital conflicts than did couples consisting of two Type B's or a Type A husband and a Type B wife. Couples consisting of a Type B husband and a Type A wife displayed an intermediate level of hostile dominance. These results are consistent

Preliminary evidence for the construct and concurrent validity of the DS14 in Hebrew.

BACKGROUND: Type D personality is a risk indicator in cardiac patients. While both the validity and reliability of the Type D scale (DS14) have been confirmed in Western Europe, less attention has been paid to the subject in other nations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Hebrew version of the DS14 among a sample of cardiac patients in Israel. METHOD: Male patients (N = 94) hospitalized for a first acute coronary syndrome (ACS) completed the DS14 1 month after their ACS. The Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI) scales for depression and anxiety and the Buss-Dur

[Clinical and experimental-psychological data of post-schizophrenic depression VG].

Since depressive symptoms (SDS) are prevalent under-recognized and clinically important problems in patients with schizophrenia, the pattern of symptoms and associated features of depressive symptoms, as well, as inclusion of psychopathology and neurodynemic variations in personality structure of patients with chronic schizophrenia deserve more investigation. The aim of the research was to identify clinical and experimental-psychological features of post-schizophrenic depression. The longitudinal study has been designed to investigate patients with paranoid schizophrenia. As a result of the ca

MRI findings and Axis I and II psychiatric disorders after traumatic brain injury: a 30-year retrospective follow-up study.

We studied the association between psychiatric disorders and the presence and location of traumatic lesions on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 58 patients, on average, 30 years after traumatic brain injury. Axis I psychiatric disorders that had begun after the injury were assessed with the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (version 2.1), and Axis II disorders with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders. A 1.5-Tesla MRI scanner was used. One-third of the subjects had traumatic lesions visible on MRI. Only three psychiatric disorders, that is

Heritability of hostility-related emotions, attitudes, and behaviors.

Hostility-related variables have been categorized as to kinds of emotions, attitudes, and behaviors. Relatively few studies have explored whether genetic factors contribute to individual differences in these variables. Moreover, the majority of this research has involved male subjects. The present study utilized the twin method to evaluate the influence of genetic factors on hostility-related emotions, namely, trait anger and irritability, hostility-related attitudes, namely cynical hostility and suspiciousness, and hostility-related behaviors, namely, physical, verbal, and indirect aggression

Personality traits in patients with oral malodor.

Many patients presenting at oral malodor clinics have psychological halitosis, which is characterized as being obsessive about having oral malodor or being distressed from a keen awareness of oral odor. We used the Tokyo University Egogram (TEG) to evaluate personality traits in patients presenting at the oral malodor clinic of this institute. The incidence of each TEG personality type was compared between a total of 600 patients presenting at the clinic and a cohort of healthy individuals. Differences were found between the malodor patient and healthy groups. Nurturing Parent (NP)-dominant, A

Characterization of a comprehensive type A measure for children in a biracial community: the Bogalusa Heart Study.

To evaluate the development of Type A-like behavior in children, responses to the Hunter-Wolf Instrument were studied in 2128 children in Bogalusa, Louisiana, a biracial community. Test-retest reliability measures were generated by retesting a random subsample of 387 children 2 weeks after the initial testing. Norms were tabulated for each of the age, race, and sex groups. Increases in total and subscale scores with age were noted except for the Hostility subscale, which decreased dramatically in the older groups. White males had higher average scores during the entire period than other groups

Quantifying internal and external heterogeneous effects of bus drivers' personality traits and driving behavior on bus crashes: Insights from questionnaires and NDS data.

Existing studies about bus accident analysis have examined the impacts of internal or external heterogeneity from multiple perspectives, highlighting the multifaceted nature of accident risk factors. However, there are core limitations still to be addressed: reliance on single-type physiological, psychological or driving behavior data, neglecting group classification stability in accident heterogeneity analysis, and insufficient guidance for bus on-board Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Driver State Monitoring System (DSM) applications, resulting in incomplete crash mechanism inter

Personality traits in chronic daily headache patients with and without psychiatric comorbidity: an observational study in a tertiary care headache center.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that patients with Chronic Daily Headache (CDH) have higher levels of anxiety and depressive disorders than patients with episodic migraine or tension-type headache. However, no study has considered the presence of psychiatric comorbidity in the analysis of personality traits. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity and specific personality traits in CDH patients, exploring if specific personality traits are associated to headache itself or to the psychiatric comorbidity associated with headache. METHODS: An observ

[Psychological differences between ulcer and non-ulcer dyspeptic patients].

The existence of differences in the psychological profile of 39 endoscopically evaluated patients with ulcer (U) and non ulcer (NU) dyspepsia were examined. There were 21 U and 18 NU subjects. Cigarette smoking, intake of alcohol, coffee, mate, aspirin and NSAID were recorded, but there were no significant differences between the two groups. Personality traits were determined by the Rorschach Test, considering psychological profile (introversive, extroversive, self-restrained), impulse and emotion control (do not allow their expression, impulsive, adequately conveyed) and level of social adapt

The relationship of pathological gambling to criminality behavior in a sample of Polish male offenders.

BACKGROUND: Severe problem gambling is most often related to income producing offences such as larceny and embezzlement. In addition, the high rate of relapse to gambling problems and the link between gambling debts and crime have clinical, forensic and penitentiary implications. Considering the data from the literature presented here I decided to form and empirically verify a hypothesis that incarcerated men with a diagnosis of pathological gambling are characterized by psychopathic personality disorders, alcohol problems and criminality. MATERIAL/METHODS: The groups of participants encompas
