[Trans-appendicular continent cystostomy in the management of the neurogenic bladder].

The comfort obtained in some cases of neurogenic bladder of the girl, thanks to unsterile self catheterization, and usual absence of septic complications, incite to search for a process which could be used for the boys as well as girls in those cases where urethral catheterization cannot be done. What's more, if the catheterization is easy to achieve even by young children and if the process brings complete dryness, almost perfect conditions of comfort would be achieved. A cystostomy with a continent opening easy to catheterize and associated with a closure of the vesical neck, was the objecti

A PUBS Case in a Palliative Care Unit Experience.

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a rare condition in which purple discoloration of the collecting bag and its associated tubing occurs. It is considered a benign condition. PUBS is usually associated with urinary tract infection occurring in elderly bedridden women, with chronic urinary catheterization. This syndrome is usually reported to occur in alkaline urine, but here we describe a rare case of PUBS involving acidic urine.

Prostatic abscess: imaging with transrectal ultrasound. Case report.

A 50-year-old man presented with acute urinary retention and urosepsis. Transrectal ultrasonography (TUS) of the prostate demonstrated an abscess. Transperineal US-guided aspiration of pus, urinary bladder catheterization together with systemically administered antibiotics led to an uneventful recovery. TUS was a rapid diagnostic aid for differentiation between prostatitis and prostatic abscess; the appearance of an hypoechoic process within the prostate suggests an abscess.

Rectus fascial sling for the treatment of neurogenic sphincteric incontinence in boys: is it safe and effective?

PURPOSE: While a fascial sling for treating children with intractable urinary incontinence is often successful in girls, its effectiveness in boys remains unclear. We determined the long-term efficacy of a rectus fascial sling in boys with neurogenic sphincteric incontinence and defined its urodynamic characteristics for achieving continence. METHODS AND METHODS: We reviewed the charts of all boys who underwent a rectus fascial sling procedure for neurogenic incontinence to determine urinary continence status at the most recent office visit or by telephone interview, the type and dose of anti

[Thulium laser vaporization versus transurethral resection of the prostate and risk factors for postoperative urethral stricture].

OBJECTIVE: To compare thulium laser vaporization of the prostate (TLVP) and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) analyze the risk factors for postoperative urethral stricture. METHODS: From June 2015 to June 2016, 210 BPH patients in our hospital underwent TURP (n = 126) or TLVP (n = 84). We followed up the patients for 6 months, compared the effects of the two surgical strategies and analyzed the risk factors for postoperative urethral stricture by multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Compared with TURP, TLVP ach

Independent association of urinary F2-isoprostanes with survival in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

OBJECTIVES: Within the past decade, biochemical markers have emerged as attractive tools to assess pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) prognosis, being noninvasive and easily repeatable. The objective of this study was to determine whether biomarkers measured at initial diagnostic right-sided heart catheterization predict 3-year all-cause mortality for incident cases of PAH independently of clinical and hemodynamic parameters. METHODS: Patients with incident PAH were enrolled between December 2003 and April 2006 in six centers from the French Network on Pulmonary Hypertension and followed fo

A bladder scan trial in geriatric rehabilitation.

Urinary incontinence is a major problem in older adults. Research suggests that the key to successful management of urinary incontinence is careful evaluation. In recent years, bladder ultrasonography has become widely used in rehabilitation and outpatient settings. A pilot study was initiated to evaluate the effectiveness of bladder ultrasound scanning in the assessment and treatment of urinary incontinence. The study took place in two rehabilitation units of a small orthopedic hospital. The study found that the bladder scanner enables nurses to do a complete assessment of bladder function wi

Are we underestimating urinary retention following intravesical onabotulinumtoxinA in women with overactive bladder and a history of prior pelvic surgery?

AIMS: This study's purpose is to review the rates of urinary retention requiring intermittent catheterization (IC) post intravesical OnabotulinumtoxinA (BTN/A) injection for idiopathic overactive bladder from a single practicing specialist urological surgeon. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of a single Australian urologist to identify the rate of intermittent catheterization in our clinical setting. Logistic regression was used to assess associations between requirement of IC and risk factors for urinary retention. RESULTS: Ninety-four patients were included after inclusion and

Suprameatal urethrolysis with Martius flap for refractory bladder outflow obstruction following stress incontinence surgery in females.

AIMS: To present our technique of suprameatal urethrolysis with Martius flap (SMUM) and outcomes of this procedure for refractory female bladder outflow obstruction (BOO). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify female patients who underwent SMUM between January 2010 and August 2016 after failed transvaginal urethrolysis (TVU) for BOO due to prior stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgery. The primary outcome measure was surgical success defined as patient ability to void volitionally without need for catheterization or additional surgery for BOO. Secondary outcomes as

Analysis of voiding dysfunction after transobturator tape procedure for stress urinary incontinence.

PURPOSE: The definition of posttransobturator tape procedure (post-TOT) voiding dysfunction (VD) is inconsistent in the literature. In this study, we retrospectively investigated the risk factors for post-TOT VD by applying various definitions in one cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 449 patients were evaluated postoperatively. Acute urinary retention requiring catheterization, subjective feeling of voiding difficulty during follow-up, and postoperative postvoid residual (PVR) greater than 100 mL or PVR greater than 50% of voided volume (significant PVR) were adopted for t

Preexisting neurogenic voiding dysfunction in children with imperforate anus: problems in management.

We evaluated 22 boys and 2 girls 1 month to 8 years old with imperforate anus to determine the relationship between neurogenic voiding dysfunction and bony sacral or spinal cord anomalies. Lower urinary tract function before anorectoplasty was normal in 12 children (group 1), abnormal (detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia) in 9 (group 2) and not evaluated in 3 (group 3). High lesions of imperforate anus were present in 22% of the patients in group 1 and in 100% of those in group 2. Plain radiography revealed partial sacral agenesis in 1 child in group 1 and 4 in group 2. Magnetic resonance imaging d

Intestinocystoplasty in combination with clean intermittent catheterization in the management of vesical dysfunction.

Intestinocystoplasty in combination with clean intermittent catheterization has been used in the management of 60 young patients with bladder dysfunction. Of the patients 39 (65 per cent) had the primary diagnosis of myelomeningocele, 8 had sacral agenesis, 3 had spinal cord tumors and 1 had spinal cord trauma. The remaining 9 patients had either congenital, surgical or traumatic loss of all or a large portion of the bladder. Of the 60 patients 30 had undergone prior urinary diversion, while the remaining 30 were considered failures with management by clean intermittent catheterization and med

Preventing catheter-related urinary tract infection: focus on Proteus mirabilis.

Urinary tract infectious caused by Proteus are uncommon, and account for only 1-2% of community-acquired infectious. However, it is important that staff are able to recognise the features of a Proteus infection. Proteus infections, if unrecognised, can become established and cause major health problems. Proteus is more common in people who have or have had a urinary catheter. Minimizing the incidence and duration of urinary catheterization is an important part of preventing infection. Community staff who are alert to the possibility of this infection can make a huge difference to their patient…
