Comparison of clinical diagnosis and microbiological test results in vaginal infections.

Lower genital tract infections continue to be a problem due to the fact that the clinical diagnosis is usually inadequate, and subsequent care is suboptimal. This study aimed at evaluating the accuracy of clinical diagnosis by comparing it with microbiologic test results, and to determine the causative agents of vaginal infections. Sixty-seven nonpregnant women (18-45 years of age) with the clinical diagnosis of lower genital tract infection were enrolled in the study. Patients were not included if they had a history of vaginal infection during the previous three-month period or intrauterine d

[Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a patient with condylomata acuminata].

Chlamydia trachomatis cervical infection was observed in a 19-year-old woman with genital condylomata acuminata. To isolate C.trachomatis, cycloheximide-treated McCoy cells and a culture-independent monoclonal antibody were used. In addition, a single-antigen immunofluorescence test was made to determine the chlamydia antibody titer. Condylomata acuminata are induced by human papillomaviruses (HPV), predominantly types 6 and 11. This case shows that simultaneous genital infection of C.trachomatis and HPV requires special attention.

[Opportunistic microorganisms in urinary tract diseases].

The microflora of clinical material (urine, urethral discharge and smear, vaginal discharge and smear, feces in colonic dysbacteriosis) from patients with urinary tract infections (UTI) in the Moscow Region was studied. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis have been found to be the most common agents isolated from the urine of UTI patients. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other staphylococcal species and enterococci account for a smaller proportion of infections. High- (E. coli and S. epidermidis) and moderate-priority pathogens are translocated into the urinary tract from the colonic bi

Isolation and identification of Geotrichum candidum as an etiologic agent of geotrichosis in Bulgaria.

Geotrichosis affects mainly patients with systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus, leukoses, neoplasms etc. Clinically, it is similar to candidiasis and may occur as an oral, vaginal, skin, or systemic infection. Clinical specimens (98 sputa and 67 oral smears) were collected and studied using microscopic examination of Gram stained preparations and culture sampling between 1995 and 1997. Geotrichum candidum was isolated as a single pathogen in 8 sputum and 7 oral smear samples. Ten-day antifungal treatment with Nizoral was applied and resulted in relatively quick clinical improvement. The pr

Bacterial vaginosis, representation of endocervical and/or metaplastic cells, and cytological abnormalities in different age groups: Association study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have indicated that bacterial vaginosis (BV) might be a cofactor for the acquisition and persistence of high-risk papillomavirus, enabling the development of cytological abnormalities. The presence of endocervical and metaplastic cells makes the smear more adequate for the detection of these abnormalities once these cell types are representative of the transformation zone, a site of increased susceptibility to viral infection. METHODS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the patterns of vaginal microbiota, the representation of endocervical and/or metaplastic cells,

Occurrence of congenital cerebral theileriosis in a newborn twin Holstein calves in Iran: Case report.

An 8-day-old newborn female twin Holstein calves with a history of weakness, anorexia, emaciation and convulsion were presented to Tabriz University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. On admission, the calves were febrile and recumbent. Physical examination revealed many ticks from the external body surface of the animals, right and left prescapular lymphadenopathy, severe opisthotonos, nystagmus, pedaling, blindness, hyperpnea and hypersthenia. Buccal and vaginal mucous were pale and no other physical abnormalities were diagnosed. Fecal flotation, complete blood count, bone marrow aspiration, cere

Diagnosis of sternomastoid tumor of infancy by fine-needle aspiration cytology.

Sternomastoid tumor of infancy, also known as fibromatosis colli or muscular torticollis, is a benign fibroblastic lesion of the sternocleidomastoid muscle presenting as a firm, fusiform, non-tender neck mass of 1-3 cm in greatest dimension in the perinatal period. Various modalities are used for the diagnosis including radiographic studies, fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), and open biopsy. We report eight cases of sternomastoid tumor of infancy diagnosed by FNAC. The objective of the study is to present the role of FNAC in the diagnosis of sternomastoid tumor with its cytomorphological

Endocervical Gram stain smears and their usefulness in the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of endocervical Gram stain smears in the diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in a female population attending a STD clinic. METHODS: 494 females attending a STD clinic and undergoing a speculum examination had endocervical specimens submitted for C trachomatis culture, direct fluorescent antibody testing (DFA), and N gonorrhoeae culture. Endocervical smears were also collected for Gram stain. The number of polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) per high power field (HPF), presence of bacteria, yeast, red blood cells, and clue cells we

[Using polymerase chain reaction for the detection of gonorrhoea in women and children in Taiyuan].

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was established for the detection of gonococcal gene in samples obtained from women and children with lower genital tract infection. The primers were used for PCR amplification derived from sequence for DNA representing part of the open reading frame (ORF) for the chromosome of N. gonorrhoea. In this study, a total number of 9204 specimens were obtained from women and children with lower genital tract infection from 1986 to 1995 in Taiyuan. The positive rate of N. gonorrhoea for Gram's stain of smears was 26.5% while the rates for culture and PCR were 1

Vaginal and cervical abnormalities associated with trichomonal infection.

Cytological changes were studied among 393 women, reporting to Samir Health Centre, Khartoum (Sudan), using Papanicolaou staining. Vaginal trichomoniasis was confirmed by wet-mounts and cultural methods. Non-specific inflammatory changes were prominent (17.4%). In 33.5% of parasitised patients, the cervix was found healthy. Cancer of the cervix was not detected in patients investigated.

Some aspects of the diagnosis of specific vaginal infections in the Rotterdam STD clinic population.

We studied specific vaginal infections in 351 consecutive women who visited the Rotterdam STD clinic. Prostitutes less often had vaginal or vulvar complaints than non-prostitutes (Fisher test, p less than 0.01), but more often had abnormal discharge (Fisher test, p less than 0.001). Normal secretions were found in 52% of the women. Clue cell-positive discharge (CCPD) was by far the most prevalent vaginal disease entity (32%). The wet mount showed pseudo-hyphae in 14 women (4%) and Trichomonas vaginalis was detected in 20 (6%). Microscopy (normal saline, no KOH 10%) had an overall sensitivity o

Cytologic manifestations of cervical and vaginal infections. II. Confirmation of Chlamydia trachomatis infection by direct immunofluorescence using monoclonal antibodies.

We found inflammatory patterns of transparent lymphocytes on increased numbers of histiocytes suggestive of chlamydial infection in 68 (56%) of 121 cervical cytologic smears. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 36 (53%) of those with and only two (4%) of those without such inflammatory patterns. Direct stain with fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal antibodies demonstrated elementary bodies of C trachomatis in 30 (79%) of the 38 culture-positive patients, including 29 of the culture-positive patients who had an inflammatory cytologic pattern suggestive of C trachomatis infection. Thus, Papani

Cytologic manifestations of cervical and vaginal infections. I. Epithelial and inflammatory cellular changes.

We used multiple logistic regression to analyze microbiological and clinical correlates of inflammatory and epithelial cell changes on Papanicolaou-stained cervical smears in patients from a sexually transmitted disease clinic. Among randomly selected patients, increased numbers of histiocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes and the presence of transformed lymphocytes were associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection, while increased lymphocytes were associated with Trichomonas vaginalis infection; minimal squamous atypia was associated with yeast infection; and moderate squamous atypia an
