OBJECTIVE: To assess the relative escape force of human epididymal sperm using a laser generated optical trap and compare it with that of human ejaculated sperm.
DESIGN: Evaluation of the relative force generated by epididymal and ejaculated sperm using an 800-nm laser-generated optical trap system (titanium-sapphire, model 899-01; Coherent Innova, Palo Alto, CA).
SETTING: University-based facility at the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic and Center for Reproductive Health, University of California, Irvine.

Five patients with obstructive azoospermia are presented. They were evaluated by a complete history, physical examination and semen analysis, including fructose studies, and serum testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone determinations. A history or suspected history of epididymitis or prostatitis was identified in 4 patients and a history of iatrogenic obstruction was found in 3. All patients underwent testicular biopsy which showed normal spermatogenesis. A vasogram was crucial in determining the site of obstruction. All patients underwent transvasovasostomy through the scrotal septum.

The synthesis and characterization of a prodrug that appears to overcome the problem of inefficient absorption of epinephrine through the lipoidal membranes of the eye are described. The enzymatic rate of regeneration of epinephrine from the prodrug was determined using a rabbit eye homogenate, rabbit plasma, and human plasma.
