[Neurological examination and neuroanatomical localization in companion rabbits - an important step for diagnosis].

Neurological examination in pet rabbits aims at localizing lesions within the nervous system in order to determine differential diagnoses and appropriate further diagnostics. Due to species-specific behavior and anatomical differences, the standard examination protocol used in small animals requires modification. In 2 published studies involving clinically healthy pet rabbits, several neurological tests were found to be either non-applicable or to require adjustments. The examination includes the assessment of consciousness and behavior, posture, gait, cranial nerve function, postural reaction

Effect of Vestibulosympathetic Reflex and Baroreflex on Expression of pERK in the Nucleus Tractus Solitarius following Acute Hypotension in Conscious Rats.

Control of blood pressure is maintained by the interaction between the arterial baroreflex and vestibulosympathetic reflex during postural changes. In this study, the contributions of vestibular receptors and baroreceptors to the maintenance of blood pressure following acute hypotension were compared in terms of phosphorylated extracellular regulated protein kinase (pERK) expression in the nucleus tractus solitaries (NTS). Expression of pERK in the NTS was measured in conscious rats that had undergone bilateral labyrinthectomy (BL) and/or sinoaortic denervation (SAD) 5, 10, 20, and 40 min foll

Quantitative study of Scarpa's ganglion and vestibular sense organs in endolymphatic hydrops.

The density of vestibular hair cells and the number of neurons in Scarpa's ganglion were estimated for 11 temporal bones with endolymphatic hydrops. The ten subjects from which these bones were taken all exhibited decreased caloric response (when tested), fluctuating hearing loss, and episodic vertigo. The degeneration of vestibular sense organs was found within the "normal" range for all except one case, which showed total degeneration of the posterior crista ampullaris. Ganglion cell counts in all cases were low. In three of the ten subjects, counts fell below the lowest values seen in a sam

Ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in response to bone-conducted vibration in patients with probable inferior vestibular neuritis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous evidence shows that the n10 component of the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential indicates utricular function, while the p13 component of the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential indicates saccular function. This study aimed to assess the possibility of differential utricular and saccular function testing in the clinic, and whether loss of saccular function affects utricular response. METHODS: Following vibration conduction from the mid-forehead at the hairline, the ocular n10 component was recorded by surface electromyograph electrodes beneath b

Operational unit responsible for plane-specific control of eye movement by cerebellar flocculus in cat.

1. Main findings in our previous studies are as follows: 1) there are three Purkinje cell zones running perpendicular to the long axis of the folia in the cat flocculus, 2) the caudal zone controls activity of the superior rectus (SR) and inferior oblique (IO) extraocular muscles via the y-group and oculomotor nucleus (OMN) neurons, and 3) the middle zone controls activity of the lateral (LR) and medial rectus (MR) muscles via the medial vestibular (MV) and abducens nucleus (ABN) neurons. In the present study, the neuronal pathways from the remaining rostral zone were investigated in the anest

Prevalence of Scarpa's ganglion enhancement on high-resolution MRI imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The vestibular ganglion, or Scarpa's ganglion, is a cluster of afferent vestibular neurons within the internal auditory canal (IAC). There is minimal literature describing enhancement of this region on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its correlation to clinical symptoms. Here, we sought to find the prevalence of enhancement at Scarpa's ganglion, and determine whether such enhancement correlates with demographics or clinical symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of consecutive patients with an MRI of the IAC between 3/1/2021 and 5/20

A knock-in reporter mouse model for Batten disease reveals predominant expression of Cln3 in visual, limbic and subcortical motor structures.

Juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (JNCL) or Batten disease is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder of children caused by mutation in CLN3. JNCL is characterized by progressive visual impairment, cognitive and motor deficits, seizures and premature death. Information about the localization of CLN3 expressing neurons in the nervous system is limited, especially during development. The present study has systematically mapped the spatial and temporal localization of CLN3 reporter neurons in the entire nervous system including retina, using a knock-in reporter mouse model. Neuronal deficits, not involving motor neurons, in mice lacking BDNF and/or NT4.

Nerve growth factor and other neurotrophins signal to neurons through the Trk family of receptor tyrosine kinases. TrkB is relatively promiscuous in vitro, acting as a receptor for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-4 (NT4) and, to a lesser extent, NT3 (refs 3-5). Mice lacking TrkB show a more severe phenotype than mice lacking BDNF, suggesting that TrkB may act as a receptor for additional ligands in vivo. To explore this possibility, we generated mice lacking NT4 or BDNF as well as mice lacking both neurotrophins. Unlike mice lacking other Trks or neurotrophins, NT4-defic

AAGGG repeat expansions trigger RFC1-independent synaptic dysregulation in human CANVAS Neurons.

Cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a late onset, recessively inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by biallelic, non-reference pentameric AAGGG(CCCTT) repeat expansions within the second intron of replication factor complex subunit 1 (RFC1). To investigate how these repeats cause disease, we generated CANVAS patient induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) derived neurons (iNeurons) and utilized calcium imaging and transcriptomic analysis to define repeat-elicited gain-of-function and loss-of-function contributions to neuronal toxicity. AAGGG repe

Correlation between the dizziness handicap inventory and balance performance during the acute phase of unilateral vestibulopathy.

PURPOSE: The dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) is widely used to evaluate self-perceived handicap due to dizziness, and is known to correlate with vestibular function tests in chronic dizziness. However, whether DHI reflects subjective symptoms during the acute phase has not been studied. This study aims to investigate the correlations of subjective and objective measurements to highlight parameters that reflect the severity of dizziness during the first week of acute unilateral vestibulopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with acute unilateral vestibulopathy were examined. P

A characteristic pattern in the postural sway of unilateral vestibular impaired patients.

The statistical properties of the center of pressure (COP) change over time, and -invariant methods of the COP analysis is not sufficient to monitor the changes. Therefore, dynamic temporal information of the COP signals has been important in assessing the postural stability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristic pattern of time-frequency dynamics during the upright stance in patients with unilateral vestibular dysfunction (UVD). This study included 20 dizzy patients with UVD and age-matched 20 control subjects without any vestibular disorder. The COP signals were collec

What is the optimal number of treatment sessions of vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation is effective and safe in patients with instability. However, there is insufficient evidence for distinguishing between efficacies of different dosage of therapies. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to verify whether there were differences between two computerised dynamic posturography (CDP) therapies of different numbers of sessions, in order to establish the optimal strategy. We conducted a prospective, comparative study of two different dosage of CDP therapy (a 5-session group and another of 10-session group) in patients with instability due to chronic uni

RNA Foci in Two bi-Allelic RFC1 Expansion Carriers.

Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a late-onset, autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by biallelic AAGGG/ACAGG repeat expansion (AAGGG-exp/ACAGG-exp) in RFC1. The recent identification of patients with CANVAS exhibiting compound heterozygosity for AAGGG-exp and truncating variants supports the loss-of-function of RFC1 in CANVAS patients. We investigated the pathological changes in 2 autopsied patients with CANVAS harboring biallelic ACAGG-exp and AAGGG-exp. RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization of the 2 patients revealed CCTGT- and CCCTT-

Changes in serotonergic neurons in the brain of pyrithiamine-induced acute thiamine-deficient mice.

We examined changes in 5-hydroxytriptamine (5-HT, serotonin) neurons in pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency in mice immunohistochemically. Extensive decreases in the densities of 5-HT-immunoreactive fibers were detected in the lateral septal nucleus, the thalamus, the medial mammillary nucleus, the dorsal and the median raphe nuclei, the raphe obscurus nucleus, the tegmental area, the cerebellum and the vestibular nucleus, though only a small decrease was detected in the inferior colliculus. Most remarkably, degenerative winding fibers were detected between the deep mesencephalic nucleus
