Inter- and intrahemispheric sources of vestibular signals to V1.

Head movements are sensed by the vestibular organs. Unlike classical senses, signals from vestibular organs are not selectively conveyed to a dedicated cortical area but are broadcast throughout the cortex. This distributed processing pattern reflects the fundamental role of vestibular information in contextual modulation across diverse cortical computations. Surprisingly, the routes taken by vestibular signals to reach the cortex are still largely uncharted. Here, we show that the primary visual cortex (V1) receives real-time head movement signals-direction, velocity, and acceleration-from th

Generation and characterization of vestibular inner ear organoids from human pluripotent stem cells.

The inner ear has a pivotal role in auditory and vestibular perception. Despite the vast number of individuals worldwide affected by hearing loss and balance disorders, therapeutic options have been largely limited to technological aids. The recent advent of gene therapies for genetic hearing loss in human patients underscores the urgency of developing scalable platforms to investigate a broader spectrum of inner ear disorders. Although animal models are powerful for assessing auditory and vestibular dysfunction, in vitro human inner ear models have shown promise in disease modeling and as pla

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation Advancements for Spatial Disorientation Training.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation (SD) remains the leading contributor to Class A mishaps in the U.S. Navy, consistent with historical trends. Despite this, SD training for military aircrew is largely confined to the classroom and experiential training replicating SD illusions is limited and infrequent. Static flight simulators are most commonly used for training but offer no vestibular stimulation to the flight crew, omitting the source of vestibular-mediated SD.BACKGROUND: We first cover vestibular-mediated SD illusions which may be replicated through galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS)

Gravitational change-induced alteration of the vestibular function and gene expression in the vestibular ganglion of mice.

Gravity has profoundly influenced life on Earth, yet how organisms adapt to changes in gravity remains largely unknown. This study examines vestibular plasticity, specifically how the vestibular system responds to altered gravity. We subjected male C57BL/6J mice to hypergravity (2 G) followed by normal gravity (1 G) to analyze changes in vestibular function and gene expression. Mice showed significant vestibular dysfunction, assessed by righting reflex tests, which persisted for days but reversed at 1 G after exposure to 2 G. Gene expression analysis in the vestibular ganglion identified signi

Evolutionarily conserved brainstem architecture enables gravity-guided vertical navigation.

The sensation of gravity anchors our perception of the environment and is important for navigation. However, the neural circuits that transform gravity into commands for navigation are undefined. We first determined that larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) navigate vertically by maintaining a consistent heading across a series of upward climb or downward dive bouts. Gravity-blind mutant fish swim with more variable heading and excessive veering, leading to less effective vertical navigation. After targeted photoablation of ascending vestibular neurons and spinal projecting midbrain neurons, but not

Frequency-dependent tuning of the human vestibular "sixth sense" by transcranial oscillatory currents.

OBJECTIVE: The vestibular cortex is a multisensory associative region that, in neuroimaging investigations, is activated by slow-frequency (1-2 Hz) galvanic stimulation of peripheral receptors. We aimed to directly activate the vestibular cortex with biophysically modeled transcranial oscillatory current stimulation (tACS) in the same frequency range. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects and one rare patient with chronic bilateral vestibular deafferentation underwent, in a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, to tACS at slow (1 or 2 Hz) or higher (10 Hz) frequency and sham stimulations, ov

The human vestibular cortex: functional anatomy of OP2, its connectivity and the effect of vestibular disease.

Area OP2 in the posterior peri-sylvian cortex has been proposed to be the core human vestibular cortex. We investigated the functional anatomy of OP2 and adjacent areas (OP2+) using spatially constrained independent component analysis (ICA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from the Human Connectome Project. Ten ICA-derived subregions were identified. OP2+ responses to vestibular and visual motion were analyzed in 17 controls and 17 right-sided vestibular neuritis patients who had previously undergone caloric and optokinetic stimulation during fMRI. In controls, a posterior

Endolymphatic Hydrops in the Setting of Vestibular Schwannoma: A Temporal Bone Study.

HYPOTHESIS: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) may be associated with endolymphatic hydrops (EH). EH may account for symptomatology in a subset of patients with VS. BACKGROUND: Presenting symptoms of VS and EH overlap, and MRI evaluation of the membranous labyrinth in some patients with VS demonstrates EH. The aim of the current study is to evaluate whether EH is present in temporal bones of patients with VS. METHODS: The NIDCD and House Temporal Bone Laboratory at UCLA Eccles database was queried for the diagnosis of "acoustic neuroma." Exclusion criteria included concomitant ear disease and surger

Repetitive Low-Intensity Vestibular Noise Stimulation Partly Reverses Behavioral and Brain Activity Changes following Bilateral Vestibular Loss in Rats.

Low-intensity noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) can improve static and dynamic postural deficits in patients with bilateral vestibular loss (BVL). In this study, we aimed to explore the neurophysiological and neuroanatomical substrates underlying nGVS treatment effects in a rat model of BVL. Regional brain activation patterns and behavioral responses to a repeated 30 min nGVS treatment in comparison to sham stimulation were investigated by serial whole-brain 18F-FDG-PET measurements and quantitative locomotor assessments before and at nine consecutive time points up to 60 days after

The "Vestibular Eye Sign"-"VES": a new radiological sign of vestibular neuronitis can help to determine the affected vestibule and support the diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Nystagmus is a valuable clinical finding. Although nystagmus is often described by the direction of its quick phases, it is the slow phase that reflects the underlying disorder. The aim of our study was to describe a new radiological diagnostic sign called "Vestibular Eye Sign"-VES. This sign is defined as an eye deviation that correlates with the slow phase of nystagmus (vestibule pathological side), which is seen in acute vestibular neuronitis and can be assessed on a CT head scan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1250 patients were diagnosed with vertigo in the Emergency Dep

Broadening vestibular migraine diagnostic criteria: A prospective cohort study on vestibular migraine subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Current Bárány Society criteria for vestibular migraine (VM) include only episodic symptoms. Anecdotal observations suggest that some patients have episodic forms and others have chronic forms of VM, with interplay and evolution of both subtypes over time. OBJECTIVE: To better understand VM subtypes and evaluate a more inclusive diagnostic schema. METHODS: Four VM groups were studied: definite episodic (dVM), probable episodic (pVM), definite chronic (dCVM), and probable chronic (pCVM). Chronic VM was defined as having more than 15 dizzy days per month. Sociodemographic and clini
