PURPOSE: In this study our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs) on gait function in patients with spastic cerebral palsy for whom orthoses were indicated to control dynamic equines deformity.
METHOD: Twenty-four spastic cerebral palsied patients with dynamic equines deformity were included in the study. Videotape recordings were performed to each patient on the same day with barefoot and AFOs. Temporal distance factors including velocity, cadence, stride length, stride width and Clinical Gait Assessment Score (CGAS) were compared across two conditions.

Long-term follow-up investigations of the effect of psychological preparation on postoperative physical outcome measures have very rarely been done. In this study a three-month follow-up of a previous investigation of videotape preparation before hip replacement surgery is reported. 100 patients who previously participated in a randomized controlled study received physical examination and x-ray of the hip joint three months after the operation. The mobility of the replaced hip joint was recorded as well as ossifications of the joint. Prepared patients showed a significantly higher improvement

OBJECTIVE: To determine the degree of inter-observer variability between two reporters of dynamic evacuation proctography (DEP).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The videotapes of 136 patients who had undergone the investigation of DEP in a 1-year period were retrospectively and independently reported by two of the authors. The authors recorded the presence or absence of an anterior rectocoele (as well as size-small, medium or large), an intussusception, a rectal prolapse and any degree of non-relaxing puborectalis syndrome (NRPS).
RESULTS: The results were analysed using the κ statistic. I.W.I. report

Late effects of early visual deprivation on state control in sleep were studied in 23 infants with bilateral congenital cataract before and after surgery (usually, on the 6th month of life). In the course of three years 67 observations were performed. Laboratory assessments included videotaping infant sleep behaviour, recording EEG, EOG, ECG, galvanic skin response. It was shown that the early visual deprivation led to general changes in the basic mechanisms underlying state control in infancy. The sleep stages (active and quiet sleep), their duration and physiological autonomic and central ch

Studies which have examined the perception of emotion by schizophrenic patients have produced conflicting results, an outcome which may, in part, be due to difficulties in presenting a realistic portrayal of emotion. This study exposed 32 schizophrenic patients in remission and ten controls to five videotaped scenes of emotional situations played by actors. The schizophrenic patients were divided into three groups, namely those living with high-EE relatives, those living with low-EE relatives and those living alone, in order to test the hypothesis that patients in a high-EE environment are les

The capacity of each disconnected cerebral hemisphere to control a variety of facial postures was examined in three split-brain patients. The dynamics of facial posturing were analyzed in 30-msec optical disc frames that were generated off videotape recordings of each patient's response to lateralized stimuli. The results revealed that commands presented to the left hemisphere effecting postures of the lower facial muscles showed a marked asymmetry, with the right side of the face sometimes responding up to 180 msec before the left side of the face. Commands presented to the right hemisphere e…

An attempt was made using a combination of simple experimental manipulations and videotape recorder (VTR) analysis of bite targets employed to determine whether electroshock-induced attack on anosmic opponents in laboratory mice was an offensive or a defensive behaviour. VTR analysis suggested that ventral surface biting was more evident in this form of attack than in social conflict. Individually- and group-housed males showed similar levels of fighting on exposure to electroshock, but dominant males from pairs showed greater attack than their subordinate partners. Zinc sulphate-induced anosm

IMPORTANCE: Plus disease is the most important parameter that characterizes severe treatment-requiring retinopathy of prematurity, yet diagnostic agreement among experts is imperfect and the precise factors involved in clinical diagnosis are unclear. This study is designed to address these gaps in knowledge by analyzing cognitive aspects of the plus disease diagnostic process by experts.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the diagnostic reasoning process of experts for plus disease in retinopathy of prematurity using qualitative research techniques.
DESIGN: Cognitive walk-through, with qualitative analys

In Central Amazon, Brazil, the tabanid Phorcotabanus cinereus (Wiedemann) was recorded attacking the native duck Cairina moschata (Linnaeus) (Anseriformes, Anatidae). The flight and behavior of the tabanid during the attacks and the host's defenses were videotaped and analyzed in slow motion. The tabanid was recorded flying rapidly around the heads of the ducks before landing. Landing always took place on the beak, and then the tabanid walked to the fleshy caruncle on the basal part of the beak to bite and feed. Firstly the duck defends itself through lateral harsh head movements, and then, wh

Activation of the articulating laryngoscope and external laryngeal manipulation (ELM) improve laryngeal exposure during direct laryngoscopy. We used a head-mounted direct laryngoscopy imaging system and a previously validated scoring system for assessing laryngeal view (the percentage of glottic opening or POGO score) on 33 adult patients undergoing laryngoscopy. On each patient, we videotaped the initial laryngeal exposure (blade not activated), the view with activation of the blade, and the view with operator-directed external laryngeal manipulation. The video recordings were reviewed and th

To improve student preparedness for anatomy laboratory dissection, the dental gross anatomy laboratory was transformed using flipped classroom pedagogy. Instead of spending class time explaining the procedures and anatomical structures for each laboratory, students were provided online materials to prepare for laboratory on their own. Eliminating in-class preparation provided the opportunity to end each period with integrative group activities that connected laboratory and lecture material and explored clinical correlations. Materials provided for prelaboratory preparation included: custom-mad

The number and type of landings performed after blocking during volleyball matches has been related to the potential risk of ACL injury. The aim of the present study was to determine whether gender affects the frequency of specific blocking landing techniques with potential risk of ACL injury from the perspective of foot contact and subsequent movement after the block used by volleyball players during competitive matches. Three matches involving four female volleyball teams (fourteen sets) and three matches involving four male volleyball teams (thirteen sets) in the Czech Republic were analyze

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable acknowledgement in treatment outcome research that, although the assessment of treatment integrity is essential in many respects, it requires great effort as well as resources and is therefore often neglected.
AIMS: In order to fill this gap, the Cognitive Therapy Competence Scale for Social Phobia (CTCS-SP) was developed, based on the Cognitive Therapy Scale, to measure therapist competence in delivering cognitive therapy for social phobia. The aim of the present study was to investigate interrater reliability, internal consistency and retest reliabili

As the body decays shortly after death, a variety of gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) constantly emanate. Ethical and practical reasons limit the use of human corpses in controlled, time-dependent, intervening experiments for monitoring the chemistry of body decay. Therefore the utilization of pig carcasses serves as a potential surrogate to human models. The aim of this work was to study buried body decay in conditions of entrapment in collapsed buildings. Six domestic pigs were used to study carcass decay. They were enclosed in plastic body bags after being partially buried with r

In this study we assessed the behavioral presentation of social anxiety in Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) using a contrast group of Cri du Chat syndrome (CdCS). Behaviors indicative of social anxiety were recorded in twelve children with CdLS (mean age = 11.00; SD = 5.15) and twelve children with CdCS (8.20; SD = 2.86) during social interaction. Lag sequential analysis revealed that participants with CdLS were significantly more likely to evidence behavior indicative of anxiety in close temporal proximity to the point at which they maintained eye contact or spoke. Individuals with CdLS demo

OBJECTIVES: Positive affect in individuals with a facial movement disorder may promote lip corner movement (zygomaticus major) during smiling. We investigated whether a positive affect marker (orbicularis oculi activity) observed in an initial clinic visit of individuals with facial movement disorder (N = 28) predicted increased lip corner movement at a subsequent visit.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: In this clinical outcomes study, lip corner movement was assessed with the use of automated facial analysis. Asymmetry of movement was compared in individuals who smiled with or without the positive
