Advances in the Medical Management of Pediatric Blepharokeratoconjunctivitis.

Pediatric blepharokeratoconjunctivitis (PBKC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the ocular surface that affects the eyelids, conjunctiva, and cornea that can lead to corneal scarring and permanent vision loss if untreated. The condition presents with diverse clinical features, necessitating a broad range of therapeutic approaches. Current management strategies include eyelid hygiene practices, topical and systemic antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory agents, often in combination for optimal outcomes. Given the expanding spectrum of medical options and the emergence of new therapeutic avenue

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) associated uveitis in India - A case series.

PURPOSE: To report the uveitic manifestations of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of all SLE cases with ocular manifestations seen by a single ophthalmologist between 2015 and December 2021. RESULTS: In total, seven patients with a median age of 40 (range 18-50) years were included in the study. Female (85.7%) predominance was noted. Ocular findings were bilateral in 71% (five patients) of cases. Majority (10 eyes, 83%) of the patients had retinal vasculitis as the common finding. Antinuclear antibodies were positive in all the pati

Neuroretinitis in ocular bartonellosis: a case series.

We report a case series of neuroretinitis in ocular bartonellosis and describe the serologic verification for Bartonella henselae. This is a retrospective interventional case series of four patients who presented in the ophthalmology clinic of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia from June 2012 to March 2013. All four patients had a history of contact with cats and had fever prior to ocular symptoms. Each patient presented with neuroretinitis characterized by optic disc swelling with macular star. Serology analysis showed strongly positive for B. henselae in all of the patients. All patients wer

Ocular Surface Disease in a PICU: Incidence and Outcomes With a Dynamic Eye Care Protocol.

OBJECTIVES: Sedated intensive care patients have impaired ocular protective mechanisms putting them at risk for ocular surface disease with potential vision loss. Historically, routine eye care has been limited to critically ill patients receiving neuromuscular blockade. The aim of this project was to determine the occurrence rate of ocular surface disease in sedated and ventilated children, identify risk factors, and determine the progression of injury with routine eye care. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: A tertiary care medical-surgical PICU. PATIENTS: All intubated patients a

Mature secondary cataracts and reversible ocular hypotension.

Three eyes of three patients are reported with ocular hypotension and mature, white cataracts secondary to other ocular disease. Ocular pressures rapidly rose to and remained at normal levels with recovery of excellent vision in all three eyes following cataract extraction, with follow-up periods of 16 to 28 months. Thus a hypotensive eye with a mature, white cataract secondary to other eye disease is not necessarily hopeless, and hypotony is not a contraindication to cataract extraction in such patients.

General considerations in ocular toxicity risk assessment from the toxicologists' viewpoints.

Humans commonly obtain approximately 80% of external information from vision. Since loss of vision markedly decreases quality of life, risk assessments for visual toxicity of new drugs are extremely important. However, the ICH S4 guideline for nonclinical toxicity study of new drugs only indicates a brief instruction for ophthalmologic examinations, and submitted data for drug approval according only to this guideline are not always considered sufficient in light of ocular toxicity risk assessments. The eye is an assembly of many specialized sub-organs which have specific functions, and its in

Enucleation is the process of retrieving the ocular globe from a cadaveric donor leaving the rest of the globe undisturbed. Excision refers to the retrieval of ocular tissues, especially cornea, by cutting it separate from the ocular globe. Evisceration is the process of removing the internal organs referred here as retina. The ocular globe consists of the cornea, the sclera, the vitreous body, the lens, the iris, the retina, the choroid, muscles etc (Suppl. Figure 1). When a patient is suffering from corneal damage, the cornea needs to be removed and a healthy one must be transplanted by kera

Long-term ocular symptoms following COVID-19 linked to immune dysregulation, dysautonomia and peripheral neuropathy.

COVID-19 does not require hospitalization in most cases, but post-acute sequelae can persist and are a public health concern. In a prospective cross-sectional study, we examine persistent ocular symptoms (POS) emerging in non-hospitalized individuals after COVID-19, with individuals without POS post-recovery as controls. Using symptom and quality of life data, clinical examinations and biofluid proteomics, we document ocular symptoms persisting from 3 months up to 3 years post-infection. POS lead to significant vision disability and are linked to clinical findings not detectable in routine exa

Sustained release ocular drug delivery systems for glaucoma therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is a group of progressive optic neuropathies resulting in irreversible blindness. It is associated with an elevation of intraocular pressure (>21 mm Hg) and optic nerve damage. Reduction of the intraocular pressure (IOP) through the administration of ocular hypotensive eye drops is one of the most common therapeutic strategies. Patient adherence to conventional eye drops remains a major obstacle in preventing glaucoma progression. Additional problems emerge from inadequate patient education as well as local and systemic side effects associated with adminstering ocular hy

Ocular ischemic syndrome in a child with moyamoya disease and neurofibromatosis.

Ocular ischemic syndrome is extremely rare in childhood. Patients with moyamoya disease may be particularly susceptible to the development of ocular ischemia due to the associated carotid occlusion. A 19-month-old boy presented with neurofibromatosis and signs of ocular ischemia. At 29 months of age, he developed dense right vitreous hemorrhage and eventually lost vision in that eye due to phthisis. At almost six years of age, he developed an acute hemiplegia and was then diagnosed with moyamoya disease. This rare instance of childhood ocular ischemia in conjunction with moyamoya disease and n

Intra-ocular hydatid cyst in a child: A rare presentation.

Intra-ocular cystic lesion in a young child can be parasitic lesion, old retinal detachment with cysts or simply a vitreous cyst. Intra-ocular localization of hydatid cysts is extremely rare accounting for less than one percent of all cases. This case describes a young child with left eye pain, redness and progressive diminution of vision with progressively enlarging intra- ocular cyst. Diagnosed as intra-ocular hydatid cyst, the radiological, intraoperative and microbiological features of same are described. Also, the management required in such a case is discussed.

Eye Signs in Stroke.

A large part of the central nervous system is involved in the normal functioning of the vision, and hence vision can be affected in a stroke patient. Transient visual symptoms can likewise be a harbinger of stroke and prompt rapid evaluation for the prevention of recurrent stroke. A carotid artery disease can manifest as transient monocular visual loss (TMVL), central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), anterior ischemic optic neuropathy or ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS). Stroke posterior to the optic chiasm can cause sectoranopias, quadrantanopias, or hemianopias, which can be either congruous o
