Physical parameter estimation from porcine ex vivo vocal fold dynamics in an inverse problem framework.

This study presents a framework for a direct comparison of experimental vocal fold dynamics data to a numerical two-mass-model (2MM) by solving the corresponding inverse problem of which parameters lead to similar model behavior. The introduced 2MM features improvements such as a variable stiffness and a modified collision force. A set of physiologically sensible degrees of freedom is presented, and three optimization algorithms are compared on synthetic vocal fold trajectories. Finally, a total of 288 high-speed video recordings of six excised porcine larynges were optimized to validate the p

Cryptococcal infection of the vocal folds.

Cryptococcosis of the larynx is rare. In this manuscript we present a case of laryngeal cryptococcosis with a clear history of pigeon exposure. Cryptococcal laryngitis may present as hoarseness without other typical symptoms, even in immunocompetent individuals.

Characterization of the medial surface of the vocal folds.

A method is developed for the quantification of the medial surface of the vocal folds in excised larynges. Lead molds were constructed from the glottal airway of a canine larynx for 3 distinct glottal configurations corresponding to "pressed" folds, just barely adducted folds, and 1-mm-abducted folds as measured between the vocal processes. With a high-resolution laser striping system, the 3-dimensional molds were digitally scanned. Low-order polynomials were fitted to the data, and goodness-of-fit statistics were reported. For all glottal configurations, a linear variation (flat surface) appr

[Glottal configuration and histological findings in vocal muscles following trauma to cricoarytenoid joint].

OBJECTIVE: The unilateral cricoarytenoid joints of the rabbits were traumatized bluntly to investigate the changes of glottal configuration and histology of the vocal muscles. METHOD: 10 New Zealand white rabbits divided into 4 groups were studied. Under direct laryngoscope, the unilateral cricoarytenoid joint of each rabbit was traumatized bluntly. The glottal configuration and histology of the true cords demonstrated atrophy of the vocal muscles. The remarkable atrophy of the vocal muscles was evaluated after 1, 3, 6 and 9 months. RESULT: In 1 and 3 months after trauma, the glottal configu

Biomechanics of combined arytenoid adduction and medialization laryngoplasty in an ex vivo canine model.

Arytenoid adduction (AA) and medialization laryngoplasty (ML) are being performed concurrently in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis with a large posterior glottal gap. The biomechanical effects of this combined procedure on the larynx have not been studied. An excised canine larynx model was used to study the effects of AA, ML, and combined AA and ML (AA-ML) on vocal fold configuration (length and degree of medialization) and tension. AA-ML lengthens the affected vocal fold relative to the opposite vocal fold, although both were slightly shortened compared with the control state (n

Determination of vocal fold mucosal wave velocity in an in vivo canine model.

The vocal fold traveling wave is essential to normal voice production. The present investigation examined whether the velocity of the traveling wave (TWV) could be consistently determined in an in vivo canine model and if traveling wave velocity is affected by changes in the amplitude of recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation (RLNS) and superior laryngeal nerve stimulation (SLNS). The results showed that traveling wave velocity increased with an increase in recurrent laryngeal nerve stimulation at low constant superior laryngeal nerve stimulation, but was poorly correlated with increases in rec

Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Stimulator.

Electrical stimulation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a safe and promising therapeutic approach with the potentiality to overcome the shortcomings of conventional surgical glottal enlargement. Although aberrant or synkinetic reinnervation is commonly considered an unfavorable condition, particularly for recovery of vocal fold movement, its presence is essential to ensure the effective clinical performance of laryngeal pacemakers. Thus, the effective selection of patients who can profit from laryngeal pacemakers implantation demands the implementation of new diagnostic tools based on tests

Cadences of the collective: conspecific stimulation patterns interact with endogenous rhythms to cue socially mediated response shifts.

Many animals form behavioral collectives, and optimal interaction strategies often differ across social contexts. Sensory scenes generated by many interacting conspecifics are complex. Thus, maintaining socially calibrated responses requires individuals to distill key features from conspecific scenes to guide continued adjustments to social fluctuations. Túngara frogs produce mating calls in choruses varying in size, and interaction patterns differ across social environments; rivals alternate their calls in smaller choruses, but increasingly overlap one another's calls in a stereotyped fashion

Male proboscis monkey cranionasal size and shape is associated with visual and acoustic signalling.

The large nose adorned by adult male proboscis monkeys is hypothesised to serve as an audiovisual signal of sexual selection. It serves as a visual signal of male quality and social status, and as an acoustic signal, through the expression of loud, low-formant nasalised calls in dense rainforests, where visibility is poor. However, it is unclear how the male proboscis monkey nasal complex, including the internal structure of the nose, plays a role in visual or acoustic signalling. Here, we use cranionasal data to assess whether large noses found in male proboscis monkeys serve visual and/or ac

Neonatal Anoxia Impacts Rats' Maternal Behavior and Offspring Development due to Ultrasonic Vocalization's Impairment.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a severe clinical condition, among others, affecting the brain after offspring exposure to neonatal anoxia, which causes persistent sensorimotor and cognitive deficits. During peripartum, maternal behaviors are crucial for the healthy development of the offspring. In rats, the vocalization of newborns, around 40 kHz, corresponds to separation calls that encourage their mothers to retrieve them. Alterations in this pattern affect the maternal behavior addressed to the offspring. This study aimed to evaluate the maternal behavior of primiparous rats whose offsp

Flexibility in motor timing constrains the topology and dynamics of pattern generator circuits.

Temporally precise movement patterns underlie many motor skills and innate actions, yet the flexibility with which the timing of such stereotyped behaviors can be modified is poorly understood. To probe this, we induce adaptive changes to the temporal structure of birdsong. We find that the duration of specific song segments can be modified without affecting the timing in other parts of the song. We derive formal prescriptions for how neural networks can implement such flexible motor timing. We find that randomly connected recurrent networks, a common approximation for how neocortex is wired,

Remote acoustic monitoring of North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) reveals seasonal and diel variations in acoustic behavior.

Remote acoustic monitoring is a non-invasive tool that can be used to study the distribution, behavior, and habitat use of sound-producing species. The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is an endangered baleen whale species that produces a variety of stereotyped acoustic signals. One of these signals, the "gunshot" sound, has only been recorded from adult male North Atlantic right whales and is thought to function for reproduction, either as reproductive advertisement for females or as an agonistic signal toward other males. This study uses remote acoustic monitoring to analyze

Effects of chronic stress on the onset and progression of Huntington's disease in transgenic mice.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a tandem repeat mutation encoding an expanded polyglutamine tract. Our previous work showed that memory deficits in HD transgenic mice could be accelerated by increased levels of stress hormone, while memory in WT mice remained unaffected. HD patients experience higher levels of stress compared to the general population and symptoms of HD also include motor, cognitive, psychiatric, sexual and olfactory abnormalities, and an associated decline in activities of daily living. Therefore we investigated the impact of a robust stress

Histologic Examination of Vocal Fold Mucosal Wave and Vibration.

OBJECTIVES: Despite gross anatomic and histologic differences between human and canine vocal folds, similar wave patterns have been described yet not fully characterized. We reconstructed vocal fold (VF) vibration in a canine hemilarynx and performed histologic examination of the same vocal fold. We demonstrate comparable wave patterns while exploring the importance of certain anatomic architectures. METHODS: An in vivo canine hemilarynx was phonated against a glass prism at low and high muscle activation conditions. Vibration was captured using high-speed video, and trajectories of VF medial

Control of Pre-phonatory Glottal Shape by Intrinsic Laryngeal Muscles.

OBJECTIVES: Surgical manipulations to treat glottic insufficiency aim to restore the physiologic pre-phonatory glottal shape. However, the physiologic pre-phonatory glottal shape as a function of interactions between all intrinsic laryngeal muscles (ILMs) has not been described. Vocal fold posture and medial surface shape were investigated across concurrent activation and interactions of thyroarytenoid (TA), cricothyroid (CT), and lateral cricoarytenoid/interarytenoid (LCA/IA) muscles. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine hemilarynx model. METHODS: The ILMs were stimulated across combinations of fou

Clinical and Cellular Evidence of Glycyrrhiza glabra and Platycodon grandiflorus for Vocal Fold Nodules Complementary Treatment.

Vocal fold nodules (VFNs) are the most frequent cause of hoarseness. The management comprised medical, surgical and physical therapy but the effectiveness is not always satisfactory. In this study, we try to figure out an alternative treatment from our clinical experience summary. We retrospectively reviewed VFNs patients who received traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments from July 2018 to August 2020 and traced their Chinese Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-C10) and multidimensional voice program (MDVP) analysis results. For further evaluation, we conducted an inflammatory response of por
