In situ quantification and tracking of volatile organic compounds with a portable mass spectrometer in tropical waste and urban sites.

This study outlines an experimental method for landfill volatile organic compounds (VOCs) characterization by means of a portable time-of-flight mass spectrometer in an insular tropical environment. The concentrations of six VOCs, three aromatic and three chlorinated compounds, frequently identified in landfill gas plume were determined in the main municipal solid waste of Guadeloupe archipelago and its surrounding areas (in the Leeward Islands). Measurements were carried out for various stages of waste degradation. Without mechanical forcing on the waste piles, the results for aromatic and ch…

Determination of very volatile organic compounds in water samples by purge and trap analysis with a needle-type extraction device.

Very volatile organic compounds (VVOCs), such as methanol, acetaldehyde, ethanol, acetone, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane, were extracted from water samples using a needle-type extraction device based on purge and trap analysis. The extracted analytes could then be determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. By introducing carbon molecular sieves as the extraction medium, aqueous VVOCs could be successfully extracted using the extraction needle. The limit of quantification for methanol, acetaldehyde, ethanol, acetone, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane were 75, 75, 7.5, 0.5, 10 and 0…

Profiling of volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath as a strategy to find early predictive signatures of asthma in children.

Wheezing is one of the most common respiratory symptoms in preschool children under six years old. Currently, no tests are available that predict at early stage who will develop asthma and who will be a transient wheezer. Diagnostic tests of asthma are reliable in adults but the same tests are difficult to use in children, because they are invasive and require active cooperation of the patient. A non-invasive alternative is needed for children. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) excreted in breath could yield such non-invasive and patient-friendly diagnostic. The aim of this study was to identi…

A full evaporation headspace technique with capillary GC and ITD: a means for quantitating volatile organic compounds in biological samples.

The full evaporation technique (FET), which is a variant of headspace analysis used to overcome matrix effects, was combined with capillary gas chromatography (GC) and ion-trap detection (ITD). The aim was to enable quantitative tests of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in blood and postmortem tissue samples. FET was applied to sample sized less than 35 mg whose VOCs were released from the matrix at an equilibration temperature of 130 degrees C. A capillary column with a nonpolar stationary phase was used for GC, and ITD was performed with the mass spectrometer run in full-scan mode. The pote…

Tuning the Hierarchical Pore Structure and the Metal Site in a Metal-Organic Framework Derivative to Unravel the Mechanism for the Adsorption of Different Volatile Organic Compounds.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the main classes of air pollutants, and it is important to develop efficient adsorbents to remove them from the atmosphere. To do this most efficiently, we need to understand the mechanism of VOC adsorption. In this work, we described how the metal organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, was used as a precursor to generate MOF derivatives (Zn-GC) through temperature-controlled calcination, which had adjustable metal sites and hierarchical pore structure. It was used as a model adsorbent to study the adsorption and desorption characteristics of different VOC…

Dryland Soil Rewetting Induces Strong Volatile Organic Compound Emissions With Potential to Form Ozone and Aerosols.

Drylands cover nearly half of Earth's terrestrial surface and are expanding under climate change. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) significantly influence atmospheric chemistry, yet microbial VOC emissions from dryland soils remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate VOC emissions associated with petrichor-the characteristic scent following rainfall after prolonged drought-across a steep aridity gradient extending into the Negev Desert. Soil rewetting triggered strong VOC fluxes (1-3.5 nmol m-2 s-1 ground area) dominated by sesquiterpenes and benzenoids, with emission patterns an…

Design and development of a versatile testing setup for volatile organic compound sensors under controlled operating conditions.

Gas sensors are widely used in industrial, medical, and environmental applications for monitoring and quantifying gas molecules under ambient conditions. However, the absence of a dedicated characterization/testing setup limits comprehensive evaluation and development of gas sensors. This work presents the development of a cost-effective and multifunctional gas sensor testing setup using an operational amplifier-based electrical interfacing circuit, a multifunctional data acquisition card, a syringe pump, and a LabVIEW-based control program. Initial system calibration done using standard known

Headspace Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Profiling of Infected and Non-Infected Wound Swabs-A Pilot Study.

Infections of chronic wounds are a major healthcare burden worldwide and can lead to poor health outcomes such as amputations of limbs and death. Detecting infections early significantly increases the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Screening of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from wound swab samples can potentially serve as a highly specific indicator of infection. Profiling of VOCs from infected and non-infected wounds was carried out. Swab samples were collected from 26 wounds from 23 patients (n = 20 diabetic patients; n = 3 non-diabetic patients). There were 16 wound…

Establishing the volatile organic compound profile and detection capabilities of human remain detection dogs to human bones.

The detection of skeletal remains using human remain detection dogs (HRD) is often reported anecdotally by handlers to be a challenge. Limited studies have been conducted to determine the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from bones, particularly when there is limited organic matter remaining. This study aimed to determine the VOCs emitted from dry, weathered bones and examine the detection performance of HRD dogs on these bones when used as training aids. The VOCs of four different bones (clavicle, rib, humerus, and vertebrae) from three cadavers were collected using sorbent tubes and…

LC-MS/MS Based Volatile Organic Compound Biomarkers Analysis for Early Detection of Lung Cancer.

(1) Background: lung cancer is the world's deadliest cancer, but early diagnosis helps to improve the cure rate and thus reduce the mortality rate. Annual low-dose computed tomography (LD-CT) screening is an efficient lung cancer-screening program for a high-risk population. However, LD-CT has often been characterized by a higher degree of false-positive results. To meet these challenges, a volatolomic approach, in particular, the breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) fingerprint analysis, has recently received increased attention for its application in early lung cancer screening thanks to…
