Hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) are the most common primary hepatic neoplasm of dogs and occur at a high prevalence in captive fennec foxes ( Vulpes zerda). Of 54 captive fennec fox submissions to Northwest ZooPath, 15 (28%) foxes were diagnosed with HCC. This group consisted of nine males, four females, and two foxes of unspecified gender. Affected foxes ranged in age from 8 to 13 yr (mean 10.3 yr). Clinical signs included weight loss/inappetence ( n = 2), lethargy/weakness/ataxia ( n = 3), and seizures-shaking/tremors ( n = 4). The levels of halocarbons have been determined in rural air in central Michigan using a sampling procedure employing pre-concentration on a porous polymer. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) with an electron capture detector. Both qualitative and quantitative confirmation of the results were achieved by GC-mass spectrometry. Trichlorofluoromethane, chloroform, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene were determined in the range of 30-130 parts per trillion. During the 18 months beginning in July 1975, an outbreak of shigellosis in Seattle's community of gay men involved both Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei. Functional dyspepsia remains a major challenge for clinicians with no approved drugs available in the Western World. In October 2016, a meeting was held in Washington, DC, sponsored by the American Gastroenterological Association's Center for Diagnostics and Therapeutics, which included members of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the pharmaceutical industry, experts in FD, and representatives of patient organizations. This white paper summarizes our current status, progress with a validated patient reported outcome instrument in functional dyspepsia, future directions and needs.

Two dogs were referred to the Kansas State University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for pulmonary arterial embolization and one to Washington State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for right heart embolization of jugular catheter fragments. Endovascular retrieval of foreign bodies was accomplished under general anesthesia in all three cases. Although the incidence of, and complications associated with catheter embolization in dogs are unknown, it appears that they can be safely and easily retrieved with a nitinol gooseneck snare.

Ixodes pacificus (the western blacklegged tick) occurs in the far western United States (US), where it commonly bites humans. This tick was not considered a species of medical concern until it was implicated in the 1980s as a vector of Lyme disease spirochetes. Monitoring mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) on a former plutonium production site along the Columbia River at the Hanford Site, Washington (USA) revealed 27 (23%) of 116 adult males had unusually shaped, velvet-covered antlers and abnormally developed testicles. Multiple recent reports have suggested that Candida wound infection and sepsis are major complications of severe burn injury. Our current burn treatment plans include aggressive early burn excision and grafting, avoidance of invasive monitoring and central hyperalimentation lines, enteral nystatin, and judicious use of antibiotics. Using an HIV transmission model in 30 states and Washington DC, we simulated ending Ryan White services from Parts C and D and the Ending the HIV Epidemic and Minority AIDS initiatives in February 2026. We projected 23 883 additional infections by 2030 (95% credible interval 2812-53 813) - a 17.6% (2-39.5%) excess. A 'conservative' estimate of suppression losses projected 8.1% (4.4-12.3%) more infections. Ryan White services are critical to preventing US HIV transmission.

This article examines incarceration as a chronic condition with social, biological, and psychological elements. We do so through the lens of "institutionalization," a concept that emerged during interviews conducted with 26 people incarcerated in Washington state prisons as a chronic and often disabling state resulting from prolonged incarceration. Bicycle-sharing programs are increasingly popular and have the potential to increase physical activity and decrease air pollution, but anecdotal evidence suggests helmet use is lower among users of bicycle-sharing programs than cyclists on private bicycles. We conducted a cross-sectional study to assess helmet use among users of a bicycle-sharing program in Washington, DC. Helmet use was significantly lower among cyclists on shared bicycles than private bicycles, highlighting a need for targeted helmet promotion activities.

In a population-based case-control study of 200 cases and 400 controls in western Washington State, the authors assessed associations between meningioma and ionizing radiation in medical and occupational settings. No significant associations were observed for diagnostic studies or occupational settings, but associations were observed for radiation therapy to head or neck (odds ratio 3.7, 95% CI 1.5 to 9.5), especially for neoplastic conditions. Only four patients (2%) had meningiomas that followed high-dose cranial radiation.

Osteonecrosis, osteopenia and osteoporosis, hypertension, and mitochondrial toxicity are among the medical conditions observed in patients with HIV disease. In some cases, these disorders have been associated with antiretroviral therapy or particular antiretroviral agents. In other cases, their etiology remains unclear. Meg D. Four patients underwent successful repair of an isolated orbital floor fracture under local anesthesia. The surgical approach was by antero-inferior orbitotomy, with placement of a Nylamid plate (S Jackson Inc, Washington, DC). The anesthetic technique used was a peribulbar and infratrochlear nerve block with local supplementation. Digital control of the globe was maintained during the peribulbar injection to prevent ocular perforation. We conclude that local anesthetic for this procedure in carefully selected cases is safe and efficacious, avoiding the morbidity of a general anesthetic.
