The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of bovine copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD) in 50 mM Hepes [4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1- piperazineethanesulfonic acid], pH 7.4, was decreased by approximately 50% when the solution was made 10 mM in phosphate, in spite of the fact that the ionic strength of both solutions was adjusted to be equal. Oral zinc was tried in 15 cases of multibacillary leprosy as an immunostimulant in addition to conventional antileprosy drugs. Results were compared with those in ten similar cases treated with dapsone alone. Deficiency of dietary Zn rapidly reduces both appetite and growth, the latter effect being apparently caused by a failure of cell replication. Diagnosis of presymptomatic Zn deficiency depends largely on estimation of plasma Zn concentration but is complicated by reductions of it during a range of stressful conditions. Metallothionein is a cysteine-rich, low molecular weight protein that binds zinc, copper and cadmium. It is inducible in liver, kidney and intestine by glucocorticoids, changes in the dietary zinc supply, acute administration of various metals, food restriction, infection, stress and endotoxin treatment. Regulation of synthesis involves altered gene expression. The pathogenesis of zinc deficiency and its relationship to hypogeusia were studied in three chronic dialysis units in Toronto. The difference between low plasma zinc levels at two of the hospitals compared to the normal levels in the third hospital was significantly related to levels of dietary zinc intake which in turn was due to the levels of dietary protein intake. The role of the trace metal copper (Cu) and the role of the trace metal zinc (Zn) in inflammation were studied in rats fed diets containing varying amounts of these metals. Rats fed a diet low in Cu for two months developed more carrageenin induced inflammation than did control rats eating normal food. In rats eating the low Cu diet supplemented by added Cu, inflammation was reduced to normal levels. Rats fed a diet low in Zn for three months developed more footpad swelling after challenge with carrageenin and with monosodium urate crystals than did control rats eating a normal diet.

Untoward effects were monitored by reference to clinical tolerance, hematological, hepatic and renal parameters, and serum concentrations of copper and iron. Delayed hypersensitivity to mumps was examined in 25 apparently well-nourished men receiving regular hemodialysis, each of whom had a history of mumps.
