OBJECTIVE: Determine the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) as a mechanism of traumatic ocular injury in women, typical injury patterns, and the clinical course of affected patients. Encourage IPV screening and safety assessment in patients presenting with characteristic ocular trauma.

In this review of common and uncommon donor reactions and injuries, donation-associated deaths were found to be extremely rare and generally thought to be coincidental; the rate of coincidental deaths was less than what would be expected based on life insurance tables. BACKGROUND: Nonmissile penetrating injuries to the head and neck caused by a steel bar are rare, and a standard management strategy is lacking.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old woman sustained a steel bar injury with penetration of the head and neck. Computed tomography and three-dimensional reconstruction were performed for preoperative evaluation. Digital subtraction angiography was performed to confirm potential vascular injury. The steel bar was successfully removed through an open surgical procedure by a multidisciplinary team.

A 10-month-old boy presented with traumatic internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion caused by blunt injury after falling from a baby carrier attached to a standing bicycle. Physical examination found bruises on the scalp in the right temporal region and the right shoulder, but no wound in the neck. Chest radiography showed a right clavicular fracture. He developed left hemiparesis at 19 hours after the injury. Computed tomography revealed cerebral infarct and angiography showed cervical ICA occlusion. We describe an accidental injury to the ulnar nerve at the elbow following steroid injection for medial epicondylitis in a patient with undetected recurrent dislocation of the nerve. The chalky substance found on exploration to intermingle with the nerve fascicles was removed and the nerve was placed under the flexor-pronator mass. After surgery, complete resolution of the epicondylar pain was noted, along with significant improvement in two-point discrimination of the ulnar digits. Head injury is one of the commonest reasons for infants (< 1 year) to attend the Emergency Department (ED). Clinical management varies considerably and concern about non accidental injury results in a high admission rate in some hospitals. Chest tube thoracostomy is a commonly performed procedure in the emergency department, operating room, and intensive care unit. We report an extremely rare case of accidental insertion of a chest tube into the left atrium via the right pulmonary vein during an interventional radiology-guided placement of the catheter. To our knowledge, such a case has not been reported to date. The anesthetic and surgical management of this injury are discussed.

Left ventricular pseudoaneurysms (LVPs) occur as a complication of myocardial infarction, cardiac surgery and, rarely, due to thoracic trauma, infective pericarditis or iatrogenisis due to accidental perforation of the myocardium. Ventricular pseudoaneurysms are acquired by blood-filled spaces outside the cardiac chambers communicating with the ventricle. We present a case of LVP presented after a blunt non-penetrating chest injury. The patient underwent successful aneurysmorrhaphy.

We report a case of an otherwise healthy neonate diagnosed at birth with a classic metaphyseal lesion of the proximal tibia following external cephalic version for frank breech presentation and a subsequent urgent cesarean section. Although the classic metaphyseal lesion is considered highly specific for infant abuse, this case demonstrates the importance of obtaining a history of obstetric trauma for neonates presenting to the imaging department for suspected non-accidental injury.

We report a 73-year-old woman with right pleural gas gangrene, treated successfully by thoracoscopic debridement. The clinical course and chest computed radiography and thoracoscopy findings suggested that her condition resulted from a relatively rare esophageal injury after she accidentally ingested a fish bone. Video-assisted thoracoscopic intervention has proved useful in cases involving pleural gas gangrene.

The study was performed in 72 preparations of right and left brain hemispheres of people from birth up to 90 years who died accidentally or from diseases not related to the CNS pathology and without brain injuries. Complication of cytoarchitecture of sublayer III3 area 8 was found to continue in postnatal ontogenesis. In the second childhood (8-12 years) it approximates to that of an adult and remains unchanged during following age periods.

The patient described had myasthenia gravis manifested by laryngeal stridor after accidental exposure to chlorine gas. The diagnosis was established by correction of abnormal pulmonary function after injection of edrophonium chloride. The patient subsequently had generalized myasthenia gravis. The autoimmune injury causing this disease may have been the chlorine gas exposure, since the temporal relationship is very strong and chlorine is important in the modulation of acetylcholine synthesis.
