A double blind cross over randomized study was conducted in 7 normal healthy volunteers. Single dose (700 mg) of buffered aspirin or aspirin with calcium carbonate or aspirin with caffeine was administered orally, at least 3 days apart. Blood samples were drawn at different time intervals after administration of drug for estimation of salicylate levels. The values of different pharmacokinetic parameters (AUC0-infinity, Cmax and tmax) did not show any significant difference, suggesting that these three brands of aspirin are biologically equivalent.

Amniotic fluid N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity was measured in 21 normal pregnancies to determine reference values, and in 10 pregnancies with fetuses who had prenatally recognised renal and urinary tract malformations. Levels of N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase (NAG) were examined in 575 patients with various psychiatric diagnoses and 38 non-ill controls. Ten percent of affectively disordered patients and 19% of chemically dependent patients had abnormal NAG levels, whereas none of the 38 controls did (P less than 0.05 and P less than 0.003 respectively). Other psychiatric diagnostic groups were not associated with abnormal levels of this enzyme.

Processes of acetylation and parameters of cavitary digestion were investigated in 65 children with gastroduodenobiliary diseases. The most pronounced shifts of all the parameters studied were recorded in patients with chronic gastroduodenitis attended by metabolic dyskinesia of the biliary tract. A combination of vitamins was tested that produces protective effect on the acetylation system in the liver.

Glycosides of the fully acetylated 3-amino-3,6-dideoxy-L-hexosides in the gluco, galacto, manno, and talo configurations have been treated with chromium trioxide in acetic acid. The alpha-L-methyl glycosides, which exist in the more stable chair conformation 1C4, with an axially oriented aglycon, are resistant to this oxidation, whereas the beta-L-linked glycoside having the gluco configuration (1C4 conformation) and the alpha-L-methyl glycoside having the talo configuration (4C1 conformation), both with equatorially oriented aglycons, are oxidized to the corresponding 5-adulosonates.
