BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a complex, chronic, lifelong inflammatory skin disease characterized by the development of erythematous, indurated, scaly, pruritic, and often painful skin plaques, and it is currently incurable. It profoundly affects psychological wellbeing and social functioning and has significant associated co-morbidities. To improve clinical approaches, understanding of the experiences of patients with psoriasis is needed.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences and coping behaviors of patients with psoriasis.
METHODS: A qualitative study approach was conducted. Through semi-struc

Cancer poses a set of physical and emotional challenges to the patient, spouse, and their relationship. One challenge for couples is discussing cancer-related concerns in a manner that facilitates intimacy. Current couple-based interventions have been shown to have mixed efficacy, and little is known about how they bring about improvements. This study aims to expand our understanding of dyadic communication and intimacy to adapt and/or develop more effective interventions for couples coping with cancer. To accomplish this goal, the present study examined affective and behavioral processes asso

INTRODUCTION: There is no cure for tinnitus, which is a highly prevalent condition in service members and veterans. Battlefield acupuncture (BFA) can be used to manage pain and stress-related symptoms. We investigated BFA as a safe, low-cost treatment for tinnitus perception and coping in eight chronic tinnitus patients who were followed for 6 months after two BFA treatments to identify changes in tinnitus severity or impact.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients completed case history, Tinnitus Screener, Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI), Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire (TRQ), and Hospital Anxiety a

BACKGROUND: When an individual's activities and performances in a normal environment are limited in nature, function, or quality, that person is considered to have a disability. Although many studies on disabled people's lived experiences have been conducted around the world, there is still a significant gap between nations in multiple cases such as culture, economic status, and the recommendation of a previous study in Ethiopia, which is one reason for conducting this research.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the lived experiences of disabled individuals living in Bahir Dar City.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The burden of statistics anxiety on students calls for effective interventions. This study investigated whether a cognitive reappraisal training designed to stimulate the generation of positive re-interpretations may yield behavioral changes in anxiety measures and changes in cerebral activation patterns reflecting the activation of approach/avoidance motivational tendencies (frontal EEG alpha asymmetry response).
METHODS: Three groups of female psychology students (n = 45) with statistics anxiety were tested. Two groups received a guided, two-week reappraisal train

BACKGROUND: Occupational health interventions for leaders are underrepresented in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). When creating and developing effective occupational health interventions, identification of the specific needs of the target group is regarded as an essential step before planning an intervention. Therefore, the aim of this study was (1) to examine the subjectively experienced work-related stressors of leaders in small and medium-sized IT and technological services enterprises, (2) to explore coping behaviors leaders use to deal with the experienced work-related stressor

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity continues to be a problem throughout the world. When estimating food insecurity, few studies analyze the contexts where the phenomenon takes place. By bearing in mind levels of marginalization in four states of Mexico, this paper answers two questions: (I) What problems are experienced with access to food, and how these difficulties affect the amount of food consumed in households? and (II) How do households experience the concern of running out of food?
METHODS: Our qualitative study draws data from urban and semi-urban areas of four Mexican states: Mexico City, T

Children with dyslexia are at elevated risk of internalising and externalising mental health concerns. Our aim was to scope the extent and nature of the literature investigating factors which may influence this association. We systematically searched the peer-reviewed and grey literature with no restrictions on the date. We included both qualitative and quantitative studies. Inclusion criteria included: (1) a focus on childhood (≤18 years) reading/learning difficulties; (2) internalising and/or externalising symptoms; and (3) a potentially modifiable third factor (e.g., self-esteem). Not seemingly measuring up to Western societies' educational and occupational expectations for success, adults with dyslexia are at risk for discrimination, humiliation, low self-esteem, low self-efficacy, depression, and anxiety. We analysed 113 responses to the final comment question that was incorporated at the end of a quantitative survey on the socioemotional experiences of adults with dyslexia. The final comment question was not intended for conveying personal experiences, yet the final comment responses were personal, in-depth, and substantive - indicators of quality recommended in surv

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a serious parasitic zoonotic disease that resembles malignancy with clinically silent infiltrative growth predominantly involving the liver. AE patients show high levels of comorbid psychological burden and fear of disease progression. This study aimed to examine AE patients' perspective on their disease-related psychosocial burden using qualitative methods.
METHODS: We conducted N = 12 semi-structured interviews with AE patients focusing on their disease-related psychosocial burden, coping strategies, information seeking behavior, and subjective il

Background: Individuals caring for patients with malignant gliomas experience high rates of anxiety; however, an in-depth understanding of their distress and evidence-based interventions to target their needs are lacking. Objective: We conducted semistructured interviews with caregivers with elevated anxiety to characterize their drivers of anxiety, identify modifiable intervention targets, and capture their preferences for a psychosocial intervention. Design: From 9/2017 to 3/2019, we conducted semistructured interviews with 21 caregivers of patients with malignant gliomas, at time points fol

Genetic services are rapidly growing in the Arab world leading to increasing number of patients being diagnosed with genetic disorders. Islam is the only/major religion of the local population in these countries. Muslim patients integrate religion in virtually every aspect of their lives, and it is vital to understand the role of Islam on their coping and decision-making in the context of genetic counseling. This will help provide patients with the most appropriate services aligned to their religious beliefs and will improve outcomes. Increasing numbers of patients are being diagnosed with Lon

While trauma is recognized as being common in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) cohorts, limited research has explored how trauma impacts the lived experience of IBD. The aim of this study was to develop an understanding of how trauma impacts the experience of living with IBD and its subsequent management. An interpretative phenomenological analysis with thematic analysis was conducted. Eighteen adults with IBD participated in this qualitative research study. Key themes identified included: (1) Trauma was associated with the journey of IBD; (2) the impact of IBD and trauma, and (3) coping strat

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its treatments have the potential to significantly impact mental health, provoking feelings of anxiety, depression, and distress, which can last long after treatment is over. One of the most rapidly emerging influences in the healthcare field is mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), which are designed to cultivate present moment awareness, attentional flexibility, compassion and acceptance, to reduce physical and psychological distress. However, there is limited research into the efficacy of MBIs or disease specific MBIs in shifting negative coping, ruminative thinking

People with Parkinson's disease (PwP) experience a variety of symptoms and fluctuations in these, which they have to cope with every day. In tailoring a person-centered treatment to PwP there is a lack of knowledge about the association between pre-dominant coping behaviors and clinical markers among PwP. To describe and compare specific clinical markers between 6 suggested coping behaviors. Thirty-four PwP, who previously had been classified into 6 different pre-dominant coping behaviors, were included in this mixed methods study. Six primary variables were included in the descriptive analysi

The goal of this two-part paper is to familiarize readers with a conceptual contrast, or inconsistency, inherent in the process of adaptation to adversity, trauma, and disability onset. The contrasting viewpoints include, first, the belief that the adaptation process is best understood through adherence to homeostatic principles that underlie human behavior. The opposing view promotes the belief that this process typically follows a trajectory of either disintegration or, more likely, growth, transformation and transcendence into higher functioning levels. In this first paper, the authors atte

Although stay-at-home orders and physical distancing measures are vital to managing the COVID-19 outbreak, there is concern these limitations on in-person contact may increase feelings of loneliness. The present study examined loneliness in relation to living situation, psychiatric symptoms, and coping skills utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim was to identify demographic and psychological factors that may contribute to greater feelings of loneliness. A sample of 125 adults (18 years and older) completed measures on loneliness, psychiatric symptoms, and coping skills in September

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based interventions can support recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Although measurement is a key determinant of outcomes, there is no comprehensive assessment of measurement approaches used to capture outcomes of these programs. Here, we review the domains targeted, measurement techniques used, and domains and techniques most affected by mindfulness-based interventions for mTBI.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review. After screening and full-text review, we included 29 articles and extracted data related to measurement domains, techniques, and results.

BACKGROUND: Coping via empathic responding may play a role in preventive behavior engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, and unlike trait empathy, is a potentially alterable target for changing health behavior.
PURPOSE: Our goal was to examine the role of empathic responding in preventive behavior engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, independent of trait empathy and perceived threat of COVID-19.
METHODS: Participants (N = 2,841) completed a baseline survey early in the pandemic, and a follow-up survey approximately 2 weeks later (M = 13.50 days, SD = 5.61). Preventive health behaviors,
