Overuse of psychotropic medications among children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders: perspective from a developing country.

Psychopharmacotherapy can be an effective part of the treatment for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However debate continues over the potential benefits and costs of these treatments; additionally little is known about the pattern of psychotropic medication use in developing countries. We aimed to survey the use of psychotropic medication, their subcategories and its associations among a representative local sample of 345 Iranian pupils with ASDs. All required information about demographics as well as clinical and medication history of children was collected through intervie

Fluoxetine during development reverses the effects of prenatal stress on depressive-like behavior and hippocampal neurogenesis in adolescence.

Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period is a growing health problem, which affects up to 20% of women. Currently, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs) medications are commonly used for treatment of maternal depression. Unfortunately, there is very little research on the long-term effect of maternal depression and perinatal SSRI exposure on offspring development. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the role of exposure to fluoxetine during development on affective-like behaviors and hippocampal neurogenesis in adolescent offspring in a rodent model of mater

Prevention of problem gambling in Chinese adolescents: relevance of problem gambling assessment and positive youth development frameworks.

Although research findings show that adolescent gambling behavior is a growing problem, there are not many theory-driven prevention programs in the Chinese context. In this paper, two approaches of developing Chinese adolescent prevention program are described. In the first approach, it is argued that related programs should be developed with reference to the risk factors of problem gambling based on problem gambling assessment tools and frameworks. The modified Chinese G-MAP is used as an example to illustrate this approach. In the second approach, it is argued that programs incorporating pos

Development of a theater-based nutrition and physical activity intervention for low-income, urban, African American adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight is disproportionately worse in minority and low-income populations. Theater is a promising and effective tool for delivering health education to these underserved populations, but no known studies have examined the use of theater to promote both nutrition and physical activity to minority youth. OBJECTIVE: To develop an interactive, theater-based intervention that conveys health messages to low-income, urban, African Americans and engages them in learning ways to adopt a healthy lifestyle. METHODS: Community partners worked to develop a theater-based nutritio

Incidences of menstrual cycle abnormalities in adolescence, and matches between the age at menarche and the development of menstrual cycle abnormalities.

In this study the clinical data of all girls who visited the ambulance for paediatric and adolescent gynaecology at the university clinic for gynaecology and obstetrics in Vienna between 2001 and 2008 because of menstrual cycle abnormalities were used (n = 255). Most frequently, the girls suffered from dysmenorrhoea (29%), tempoanomaly (24%) and metrorrhagia (19%). For 57%, it was possible to find an underlying cause, mainly (24%) a hormonal one. The therapy was in 54% of all cases hormonal. In a second step, the study analyses matches between the age at menarche and the development of menstru

Intrauterine exposure to maternal enterovirus infection as a risk factor for development of autoimmune thyroiditis during childhood and adolescence.

Maternal intrauterine enterovirus infection during pregnancy increases the risk for the offspring to develop type 1 diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes mellitus and autoimmune thyroiditits (AIT) are closely linked. A common pathogenetic factor is possible. The objective of this study was to investigate a possible association between maternal enterovirus infection during pregnancy and the development of AIT in the offspring. Sera taken at delivery from 31 mothers whose children subsequently developed AIT was analyzed for immunoglobulin (Ig)A, IgG, and IgM antibodies against enterovirus, and comp

Renal function, cytogenetic measurements, and sexual development in adolescents in relation to environmental pollutants: a feasibility study of biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Human exposure to chemicals is normally monitored by measurement of environmental pollutants in external media. We investigated whether biomarkers in adolescents can show exposure to, and health effects of, common environmental pollutants. METHODS: We recruited 200 17-year-old adolescents (120 girls) from a rural control area and from two suburbs polluted by a lead smelter and two waste incinerators. We measured biomarkers of exposure and of effect in blood and urine samples, and obtained questionnaire data. School doctors measured testicular volume and staged sexual maturation.

Toward Developing Laboratory-Based Parent-Adolescent Conflict Discussion Tasks that Consistently Elicit Adolescent Conflict-Related Stress Responses: Support from Physiology and Observed Behavior.

Parent-adolescent conflict poses risk for youth maladjustment. One potential mechanism of this risk is that stress in the form of increased arousal during conflict interactions results in adolescents' impaired decision-making. However, eliciting consistent adolescent stress responses within laboratory-based tasks of parent-adolescent conflict (i.e., conflict discussion tasks) is hindered by task design. This limitation may stem from how conflict topics are assessed and selected for discussion. Within a sample of 47 adolescents (ages 14-17) and parents, we investigated whether a modified versio

Development of an intervention for middle adolescents (15-17 years old) using the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) to empower adolescent decision-making regarding HPV vaccination uptake.

INTRODUCTION: In the United Kingdom, where a school-based human papillomavirus vaccination programme vaccinates 12-13 year old students, parents/guardians have been the primary decision-makers regarding receipt of the vaccination. As the average age of first sexual intercourse is 15-17 years old, education at this time could provide an opportunity for unvaccinated students to self-consent to vaccination. The aim of this study was to develop a HPV intervention, aimed at middle adolescents (15-17 years old), using the 3 stages of the Behaviour Change Wheel. METHODS: A systematic review informed

Amplifying Youth Voices in Public Health: Assessing the Sustained Impact of PATCH Youth Engagement Programs on Adolescent Health, Well-Being and Leadership Development.

INTRODUCTION: For over 10 years, the Wisconsin-based Providers and Teens Communicating for Health (PATCH) Program has worked alongside youth ages 14-19 to enhance adolescent health programs, policies, and practices. This evaluation explores the lasting effects on those who participated in the PATCH program as an adolescent. METHODS: All former Wisconsin PATCH participants were invited to complete a retrospective pre-post survey that asked them to reflect on their attitudes, actions, and knowledge before and after participating in PATCH. The survey used 5-point Likert scales and open-ended que

An Integrated Analysis of Environmental, Team, and Parental Relations on Psychosocial Skills Development and Their Association With the Mental Health of Adolescent Athletes.

The development of psychosocial skills in youth athletes is related to multiple sports' subsystems, including parental, team, and environmental factors. These subsystems shape athletes' ability to acquire life skills, cope with stress, and build resilience which influence mental health. Understanding these interactions is essential for designing effective interventions that promote well-being and protect against mental illness. This study examined how subsystems within the youth sport system relate to psychosocial skills and their relation to athletes' mental health. A quantitative, cross-sect

Inconsistent reporting of past self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in children: A longitudinal analysis of data from the adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

In longitudinal research with adolescents and adults, one-third of individuals who report self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) fail to report this history in the future. However, there is limited information regarding this phenomenon in children. This study examined the prevalence, correlates, and developmental shifts of inconsistent reporting of SITBs in children using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study baseline (BL, ages 9-10), Year 1 (Y1), and Year 2 (Y2) assessments. Lifetime SITBs were assessed annually using a computerized clinical interview. Reporting co

[Features of the state of health, including physical development, of adolescent girls living in the middle and high mountains of the Kyrgyz Republic].

Adolescent girls aged 15-18 are in an active process of growth and development, as evidenced by the dynamics of changes in height and weight indicators. Low values of average growth indicators were determined among girls in Batken, on average 2 cm less than the average indicators of girls in Bishkek, however, the statistical analysis performed did not confirm the reliability of these differences. In 84.3% of the surveyed adolescent girls living in Naryn, iron deficiency anemia was detected. Kidney and urinary tract diseases (31.4%) took the first place in the structure of diseases among girls

Prospective associations of concerns about physique and the development of obesity, binge drinking, and drug use among adolescent boys and young adult men.

IMPORTANCE: Relatively little is known about the prevalence of concerns with physique and eating disorders among males and their relation to subsequent adverse outcomes. A broader range of eating disorders needs to be defined to diagnose these illnesses appropriately in males. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether males with psychiatric symptoms related to disordered eating and concern about physique are more likely to become obese, to start using drugs, to consume alcohol frequently (binge drinking), or to develop high levels of depressive symptoms. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The data c

Effects of early-life abuse differ across development: infant social behavior deficits are followed by adolescent depressive-like behaviors mediated by the amygdala.

Abuse during early life, especially from the caregiver, increases vulnerability to develop later-life psychopathologies such as depression. Although signs of depression are typically not expressed until later life, signs of dysfunctional social behavior have been found earlier. How infant abuse alters the trajectory of brain development to produce pathways to pathology is not completely understood. Here we address this question using two different but complementary rat models of early-life abuse from postnatal day 8 (P8) to P12: a naturalistic paradigm, where the mother is provided with insuff

Development of an explainable machine learning model for predicting depression in adolescent girls with non-suicidal self-injury: A cross-sectional multicenter study.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescent girls is a critical predictor of subsequent depression and suicide risk, yet current tools lack both accuracy and clinical interpretability. We developed the first explainable machine learning model integrating multicenter psychosocial data to predict depression among Chinese adolescent girls with NSSI, addressing the critical need for culturally tailored risk stratification tools. In this cross - sectional observational study, our model was developed using data from 14 hospitals. We used five categories of data as predictors, including individual,

Measuring Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Stigma Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Western Kenya: Scale Development, Validation, and Associations with PrEP Adherence.

Qualitative studies suggest stigma is a barrier to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa, but there are few quantitative data or validated measures available. This study sought to develop and validate a scale to measure PrEP stigma among AGYW in western Kenya. An initial scale was developed, then pilot tested with 200 AGYW taking PrEP. The final scale was used in a longitudinal study with 250 AGYW to assess the prevalence and sources of PrEP stigma and to test whether PrEP stigma is associated with PrEP adherence, measured

Exploring Behavioural Patterns in Youth Predisposed to Bipolar Disorder and the Role of Interpersonal Trauma Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe, persistent disorder that causes functional impairment. Besides heritability, environmental factors, such as traumatic experience, impact the development of BD. Little is known about the early developmental signs of this disorder; therefore, this study aims to look at the impact of interpersonal trauma on the early developmental signs of BD. Specifically, differences in psychopathological behaviours were investigated between (1) at-risk children and controls and (2) at-risk children who experienced an interpersonal traumatic event and those who d
