The objective of this study was to describe a case of giant myelolipoma associated with undiagnosed congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase (21OH) deficiency. Five seven year-old male patient referred with abdominal ultrasound revealing a left adrenal mass. Biochemical investigation revealed hyperandrogenism and imaging exams characterized a large heterogeneous left adrenal mass with interweaving free fat tissue, compatible with the diagnosis of myelolipoma, and a 1.5 cm nodule in the right adrenal gland. Biochemical correlation has brought concerns about differential diagno

A 49-year-old man with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, suggestive of islet cell origin, showed clinical and biochemical features of ectopic ACTH syndrome and underwent bilateral adrenalectomy. Light microscopy revealed adrenocortical compact cell hyperplasia and lipid depletion. The zona glomerulosa was detected in small foci and fasciculata cells extended up to the capsule. Electron microscopy disclosed enlargement of adrenocortical cells, massive SER accumulation, RER increase, lipid depletion, prominence of the Golgi apparatus and development of complex interdigitations between closely apposed c

Neuroendocrine differentiation and nerve distribution were studied in sections from human cortex (n=11) and cortical lesions (hyperplasias, n=9; adenomas, n=13; carcinomas, n=14) with four markers, namely chromogranin A(CgA), synaptophysin (SYN), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 and small synaptic vesicle protein (SV)2. All but two cases expressed neuroendocrine differentiation. NSE was the most commonly occurring marker and the NSE immunoreactive cells were detected in normal cortex, mainly in zona glomerulosa, as well as in adenomas and carcinomas. SYN and PGP 9.

This review discusses the biological roles of steroid sulfotransferase enzymes (ST's) and steroid sulfate sulfohydrolases (sulfatases) mainly in mammalian tissues. In addition, some consideration is given to certain characteristics of these enzymes and, where possible, to their biological control. A considerable number of ST's of varying specificities, substrate affinities, and kinetics appear to exist. Several of these possess the properties of regulatory enzymes. ST's which act upon estrogen in reproductive tissues, such as uterus, are of particularly high affinity, appear to be under some b

PURPOSE: A clinical case presenting secondary amenorrhea accompanied by an adrenal adenoma and hyperprogesteronemia is described in this study.
METHODS: Selective catheterization and sampling of adrenal and ovarian veins were performed.
RESULTS: The source of hyperprogesteronemia was located in the right adrenal gland. A progesterone-producing tumor in the right adrenal gland was diagnosed and removed. Twenty-six days after tumor resection, menstruation occurred.
CONCLUSIONS: Progesterone-producing tumors should be considered with the presence of an adrenal mass and hyperprogesteronemia. Co

Primary aldosteronism is the most common type of secondary hypertension affecting 6-10% of patients with primary hypertension. PA is mainly caused by unilateral hyperaldosteronism due to an aldosterone-producing adenoma, unilateral hyperplasia with or without micronodules or bilateral zona glomerulosa hyperplasias with or without macro or micronodules. The development of antibodies against the terminal enzyme of aldosterone biosynthesis (CYP11B2) has permitted the further characterization of normal adrenals and resected adrenals from patients with primary aldosteronism. Normal adrenals exhibit

Laparoscopic procedures are preferred by surgeons and patients alike because of decreased pain, reduced perioperative morbidity, and an earlier return to self-reliance. During the last decade, laparoscopic adrenalectomy has become the technique most commonly used for the removal of benign adrenal tumors. The indications for laparoscopy in malignant adrenal tumors remains controversial, because oncologic resections have not been reproducible compared with open techniques.

OBJECTIVE: Metastases of the adrenal gland are a frequent finding in patients with malignant tumors like bronchogenic carcinoma or breast cancer. Only limited and conflicting data on adrenocortical function in these patients are available.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: We investigated the impact of adrenal macrometastases on adrenocortical function in a series of 28 tumor patients using the ACTH(1-24) stimulation test and dexamethasone suppression test. Seven normal controls (Con), eleven patients without adrenal metastases (No Met), eight patients with unilateral (Uni Met) and nin

In addition to the morphological examination, the measurement of the content of corticosteroids was done in aldosterone-producing adenoma. Histologically, the adenoma consists of four types of cells. The major component of the adenoma was clear-type cells. In this type of cells, the activities of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase showed weakly positive. The fine structure was characterized by numerous lipid vacuoles and poor organellae. On the contrary, intermediate- and compact-type cells revealed higher than moderate activities of these enzymes. The surgical treatment of adrenocortical diseases indicated for hormone-secreting neoplasms and for definite cases of Cushing's disease. The surgical indication will be discussed. Since primary hyperaldosteronism caused by nodular hyperplasia of the adrenals needs a medical rather than a surgical treatment, a preoperative diagnosis and location of aldosterone producing adenomas has to be performed.

Adrenocortical tumors are rare tumors in childhood. Virilization is the most common symptom, but about 5.5% of patients may also present with isolated Cushing's syndrome. A girl 15 years and 8 months of age presented with complaints of striae on her legs, acne for 2 weeks, and amenorrhea for 2 months. On physical examination, extensive striae were observed on her legs and abdomen. On hormonal investigation, her adrenocorticotropic hormone level was <5 pg/ml, cortisol was 35.4 µg/dl. Her hypercortisolism raised suspicion of Cushing's syndrome. Adrenal MRI revealed a right adrenal mass approxima

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with poor survival rates and few treatment options. Preclinical models are indispensable to further strengthen our understanding of disease progression and development of novel therapeutic treatments. Here, we report the establishment of a new cell line named ZUC-1 originating from the resection of an advanced primary ACC and its characterization at the genomic, cellular and molecular level. ZUC-1 cells were successfully propagated as monolayer cultures and three-dimensional spheroids. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed for ZUC-1 cells c

A 16-year-old girl presented with a high fever that had persisted for more than 4 weeks. Computed tomography revealed a 4-cm mass in the left adrenal gland. Clinically, there were no obvious symptoms of adrenal hormone excess; however, serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein levels were significantly elevated. After laparoscopic left adrenalectomy, the fever subsided, and her IL-6 level normalized. The tumor was pathologically diagnosed as adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), with a Weiss score of 5/9. The tumor cells were immunoreactive for IL-6. To our knowledge, this is the first case

Simultaneous bilateral adrenal masses are less common in patients with Cushing syndrome (CS). This case report focuses on the clinical features, diagnostic workup, and treatment of a patient with bilateral adrenal tumors causing Cushing syndrome, with a horseshoe kidney. We report a case of bilateral adrenal tumors presenting with Cushing syndrome with a horseshoe kidney. Adrenalectomy was undertaken to manage the excess cortisol. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC). The preoperative cortisol level was 1750 nmol/L, which dropped significantl

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and highly aggressive endocrine malignancy. Although surgery can cure localized disease, but the majority of patients experience recurrence of ACC. The 5-year survival rate of patients with metastatic ACC is <15%, and the prognosis is poor. Therefore, it is urgent to explore the potential diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for ACC. Recently, it has been proved that non-coding RNA (ncRNAs) is widely involved in pathological and physiological processes, including tumorigenesis and development. Aberrantly expressed ncRNAs have been found to be invo
