Differences in eating disorder pathology among college students who engage in food and alcohol disturbance for specific motives and those who only drink alcohol.

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) is the use of compensatory behaviors within a drinking episode to enhance alcohol's effects (FAD-AE) and/or alcohol-related caloric compensation (FAD-CC). Prior work has found that FAD-AE and FAD-CC are positively associated with eating disorder (ED) outcomes; however, it is unclear whether ED outcomes differ by the type and number of FAD motives endorsed. This study examined whether domains of ED pathology differed between those who use alcohol only and those engaging in FAD for specific motives. Participants were 2801 (Mage = 19.48; 77.6% female; 68.8% Whit

Modeling Concurrent Hedonic Disruption During Excessive Drinking and Abstinence-Related Negative Affect in a Novel Selectively Bred Mouse Line: The Crossed High Alcohol Preferring X High Drinking in the Dark (cHAPxHDID) Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is often comorbid with depressive disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD). These comorbidities are often modeled by allowing C57BL/6 (B6) mice to drink alcohol and testing for depressive- and anxiety-like phenotypes 2-3 weeks into abstinence; however, it should be noted that B6 mice are both inbred, which may limit external validity, and show modest intakes compared to humans with AUD. We have created a new selectively bred line of high alcohol-preferring mice, the crossed High Alcohol Preferring X High Drinking-in-the-Dark mice (cHAPxHDIDs). Th

Living Up to Their Name: Blackout Rage Gallons (BORGs) Marked by High-Intensity Drinking and Alcohol Consequences in College Students.

OBJECTIVE: The blackout rage gallon (BORG) is an excessive drinking trend popular at some colleges in the United States and propelled by social media. Media reports depict harmful consequences of BORG use, but others view this trend as a strategy to reduce drink contamination, control alcohol intake, and minimize hangovers. This study provides the first detailed assessment of college students' perceptions and use of BORGs, including consequences and motivations for use and nonuse. METHOD: Participants (ages 18-25 years) were past-year college students (N = 103) from both public and private U.

Prospective and cross-sectional associations between affect, and frequency of alcohol use and binge drinking episodes in rural black men.

BACKGROUND: Black men may be especially prone to drinking-to-cope or drinking to alleviate negative affect in early adulthood due to a unique confluence of factors that impact drinking patterns in emerging and early adulthood. The current study examined these associations using a prospective longitudinal design among Black men in rural Georgia. We hypothesized that across time, increases in depression would be associated with decreases in state hope and perceived life chances. Similarly, we anticipated increases in depression and decreases in state hope and perceived life chances would be asso

Alcohol-Related Perceptions and High-Risk Drinking Among Brazilian College Students: The Role of Social Contexts, Motives, and Risk Behaviors.

Background/Objectives: Alcohol consumption is a major public health concern among university students. However, less is known about how positive and negative alcohol-related perceptions are jointly associated with drinking contexts, motives, and risk behaviors in Brazilian college samples. This study examined positive and negative perceptions of alcohol use and their associations with high-risk drinking, drinking contexts, motivations, and risk behaviors among Brazilian college students. Methods: This cross-sectional online study included 367 Brazilian college students aged 18 to 30 years (M =

MDMA administration reduces ethanol drinking and is associated with altered nociceptin and dynorphin system gene expression in alcohol-preferring rats.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) represents a major public health challenge, with current pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments showing limited efficacy. Recent clinical evidence suggests that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy may be effective for AUD, although concerns remain regarding its safety and potential for recreational use. This study investigated the effects of MDMA administration on alcohol intake in genetically selected Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferring (msP) rats, a well-established model of excessive drinking, and examined its impact on the dynorphin/κ-opioid receptor (DYN/K

Calling time on low-risk drinking guidelines: An evaluation of alternative methods to communicate risks of alcohol use to consumers.

BACKGROUND: Current epidemiological analyses suggest there is no risk-free level of alcohol consumption. Awareness remains low and consumption levels high. There is limited research on the types of alcohol warning label (AWL) messages to address this concern. AIMS: We tested alternative AWL messages with young adults to identify effective methods of communicating Canada's 2023 Guidance on Alcohol and Health. METHODS: We recruited 332 young adults attending two Canadian universities who drank at least monthly. Participants' knowledge of health risks from alcohol was assessed. Six AWLs were de

Simultaneous Alcohol and Cannabis Use With a Romantic Partner Present: Daily Associations With Drinking, Intoxication, and Consequences Among Young Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Simultaneous alcohol and cannabis use (commonly referred to as SAM) represents a significant public health concern for young adults. Romantic partners are a strong source of influence on substance use; however, research on SAM use among young adults with romantic partners is sparse. Using daily data, we tested whether SAM use was more likely on alcohol use days with a romantic partner present (vs. without), and whether SAM use days (vs. alcohol-only use) with a romantic partner present were differentially associated with alcohol use outcomes and sexual behaviors. METHOD: A communit

Serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors differentially modulate the acquisition and expression of voluntary alcohol drinking in male mice.

INTRODUCTION: Studies suggest that serotonin (5-HT) plays an important role in alcohol use disorder (AUD). While several receptor subtypes modulate the role of 5-HT in AUD, evidence suggests that 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors may be directly involved in alcohol drinking due to their interaction with the mesolimbic dopaminergic system. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C antagonists, alone or in combination, on the acquisition and expression (i.e., return to alcohol drinking after a period of abstinence/treatment) of voluntary alcohol drinking in male …

Reductions in World Health Organization Risk Drinking Levels as a Primary Efficacy End Point for Alcohol Clinical Trials: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a highly prevalent and costly psychiatric disorder. Abstinence has been considered the optimal outcome of treatment for AUD. Yet, most individuals with AUD do not seek treatment because they do not have a goal of abstinence. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently qualified reductions in drinking, defined by at least a 2-level reduction in the World Health Organization risk drinking levels (WHO RDLs), as a primary end point for alcohol pharmacotherapy trials. The approval of drinking reductions as an end point for alcohol clinical trials al

Expectancies for alcohol analgesia and drinking behavior among veterans with chronic pain: The moderating role of discrimination in medical settings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain and alcohol use are highly prevalent and frequently co-occur among U.S. military veterans. Expectancies for alcohol analgesia (i.e., degree to which one believes that drinking can reduce or manage pain) may contribute to alcohol consumption, dependence, and related harms. Discrimination in medical settings (i.e., inequitable treatment in healthcare contexts) has been linked to deleterious health outcomes and may amplify associations between expectancies for alcohol analgesia and indices of hazardous drinking. Our goal was to test discrimination in medica

The impact of the U.S federal minimum legal drinking age law on alcohol involved firearm suicide: a regression discontinuity approach.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death for young people. Half of young adult suicides are by firearm, and many involve alcohol consumption. We aimed to assess the impact of the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) of 21 years on rates of alcohol positive firearm and non-firearm suicide. METHODS: We used a regression discontinuity approach with data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) 2005-2021, among U.S suicide decedents in 14 states aged 16-35 years. The primary outcomes were the change in the proportion of tests positive for alcohol and the change in rates of alc

Sex- and ALDH2-dependent differences in alcohol metabolism and psychomotor performance: a study in Han Chinese adults after binge drinking.

BACKGROUND: Psychomotor impairments due to alcohol consumption may lead to a series of negative consequences. However, the influence of sex and ALDH2 polymorphism on psychomotor dysfunction has not yet been investigated. METHODS: One-hundred and three participants, genotyped for ALDH2 rs671, were administered a dose of 1.0 g/kg of white spirits. The blood ethanol concentration (BEC) and acetaldehyde concentration (BAAC) were measured at specific time intervals before and after alcohol consumption. Additionally, auditory simple reaction time (ASRT), visual choice reaction time (VCRT), pursuit

The impact of adolescent drinking on traumatic brain injury-induced cognitive deficits and alcohol preference in adult C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Industrial workers and active military personnel within combat roles face heightened risk for blast pressure wave traumatic brain injury (bTBI). Previous studies have shown that experiencing TBI is associated with increased alcohol (EtOH) consumption and illicit substance use. Notably, alcohol use typically begins during late adolescence or early adulthood, a period that precedes many TBI incidents; moreover, early-onset drinking is further associated with heightened risk of developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD) even in the absence of TBI. Adolescent binge drinking can induce la

Conformity to masculine norms and its association with drinking behaviors and alcohol-related consequences among adult men: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Studies typically show that men are at higher risk for heavy alcohol use than women. Research linking conformity to masculine norms and drinking behaviors among adult males has grown steadily during the past 10 years. We conducted the first meta-analysis that examines (a) the strength of the associations between conformity to masculine norms and alcohol use outcomes, and (b) the extent to which the strength of these associations would be affected by the specific type of drinking behavior or methodological factors. METHODS: We included 35 studies (N=32,412) in this meta-analysis th

Drinking motives link positive and negative life events to problematic alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Stressful life events are associated with problematic drinking, and alcohol misuse has been exacerbated during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. While coping motives may account for this association, positive life events (PLEs) and enhancement motives are understudied. To address these gaps, we examined the associations of history of alcohol use disorder (AUD), negative life events (NLEs), and PLEs with problematic alcohol use and tested coping and enhancement motives as mediators. METHODS: The sample included baseline and follow-up data from 241 participants enrolled

Tobacco use, cirrhosis, and age are predictors of readiness to change and continued drinking following brief alcohol intervention in veterans.

Alcohol use disorder is prevalent within the Veterans Health System, especially in patients being seen in hepatology clinics, and needs a point-of-care strategy. A brief alcohol intervention based on AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) may be needed for the management of hazardous alcohol intake, but feasibility is unclear. We aimed to define predictors of readiness to cease alcohol intake (0-10, 10 being ready to quit now) and continued drinking after using a brief alcohol intervention in veterans seen in hepatology clinics cross-sectionally and longitudinally over 6 months.
