Fed batch bioconversion of 2-propanol by a solvent tolerant strain of Alcaligenes faecalis entrapped in Ca-alginate gel.

A gram-negative, rod-shaped, aerobe, capable of converting 2-propanol (isopropanol, IPA) to acetone was isolated from an oil/sump, and identified by 16 S rDNA analysis as Alcaligenes faecalis. Investigations showed this strain to be extremely solvent-tolerant and it was subsequently named ST1. In this study, A. faecalis ST1 cells were immobilized by entrapment in Ca-alginate beads (3 mm in diameter), and used in the bioconversion of high concentration IPA. The biodegradation rates and the corresponding microbial growth inside the beads were measured at four different IPA concentration ranges f

In situ stabilization of chromium(VI) in polluted soils using organic ligands: the role of galacturonic, glucuronic and alginic acids.

Laboratory batch sorption and column experiments were performed to investigate the role of organic ligands such as galacturonic, glucuronic and alginic acids (main constituents of bacterial exopolymeric substances (EPS)) on Cr(VI) uptake and transport in heterogeneous subsurface media. Our batch sorption experiments demonstrate the addition of galacturonic, glucuronic and alginic acids to soils enhances Cr(VI) uptake by soil at pH values <7.7 depending on the concentration of the ligand and pH used. The enhanced Cr(VI) uptake at pH values <7.7 may be explained through either the catalytic redu

Release of furosemide from multiple-unit and single-unit preparations containing different viscosity grades of sodium alginate.

The release characteristics and the effect of viscosity of sodium alginate on the release rate of furosemide (a rather poorly soluble drug) from hard gelatin capsules (single-unit), and minitablets (multiple-unit) filled in hard gelatin capsules, were evaluated. Swelling and erosion experiments showed a different behavior for each viscosity grade. Polymer characteristics influenced significantly the release of the drug from the preparations prepared and tested. The results indicate that erosion plays a significant role, accelerates release rate and shortens duration of drug release. Low viscos

The effect of disinfecting alginate and addition cured silicone rubber impression materials on the physical properties of impressions and resultant casts.

Four commercially available disinfectants were tested and the dimensional stability and detail reproduction of impressions and their resultant casts were measured according to ANSI/ISO specifications. Results showed that alginate impressions immersed in chlorhexidine exhibited considerable dimensional change if not poured immediately. Moreover, alginate impressions soaked in a paraldehyde agent (Virkon) for more than 2 minutes produced casts of inferior surface quality whilst those sprayed and left in contact with phenol derivatives (C&J Spray) for 30 minutes resulted in casts which demonstrat

Transplantation of parathyroid tissue in experimental hypoparathyroidism: in vitro and in vivo function of parathyroid tissue microencapsulated with a novel amitogenic alginate.

Microencapsulation of tissues is an alternative to postoperative immunosuppression in transplantation. In 1994 iso-, allo- and xenotransplantation of microencapsulated parathyroid tissue was achieved in vivo. However, continued analysis of the coating substance (an alginate) determined mitogenic properties. Here, we report on the in vitro and in vivo function of parathyroid tissue microencapsulated with a novel amitogenic alginate suitable for use in humans. To assess in vitro function, parathyroid tissue encapsulated with mitogenic and amitogenic alginate was exposed to rising concentrations

Immunotherapy of tree pollen allergy with a modified alginate conjugated birch pollen extract compared to an aluminium adsorbed extract.

The safety and efficacy of two birch pollen extracts, one chemically conjugated to alginate (Anjuvac) the other adsorbed to aluminium hydroxide (Alutard), were investigated in an open multicentre comparative study of 63 birch pollen allergic patients. Both extracts decreased the nasal symptoms during the birch pollen season. The changes in specific IgE and IgG were much the same in both treatment groups. The adverse reactions recorded were mild in both groups, but more frequent in the Anjuvac group, probably because of a more aggressive dose schedule though there were twice as many asthmatics

Chronic (89-week) feeding study with hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate, starch acetate, lactose and sodium alginate in mice.

A chronic feeding study was carried out in mice with two chemically modified potato starches, hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate (HP-starch) and starch acetate (AC-starch), and with lactose and sodium alginate. Each of the materials was fed to a group of 75 male and 75 female mice for 89 wk. The dietary level of the test products was gradually increased until the diets contained (by weight) 55% HP-starch, 55% AC-starch, 55% lactose or 25% alginate. The control diet contained 55% pregelatinized potato starch. Each of the four test materials caused increased water consumption, distinct caecal and

Peptide Sequence and Backbone Conjugation Chemistry Direct Alginate Hydrogel Bioactivity for Human Mesenchymal Stem Cell Expansion.

Peptide-functionalized alginate hydrogels are a promising biomaterial candidate for supporting the expansion of adherent human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) toward therapeutic applications. Despite widespread RGD-modified alginates, critical aspects of peptide conjugation chemistry, including verification of the coupling orientation and role of amino acids flanking the core RGD motif, remain underexplored. Through systematic material characterization and peptide sequence design, this work addresses these important research gaps. We first thoroughly characterized the alginate backbone composit…

Reed-inspired dual-siloxane engineering of cellulose nanofibril/alginate aerogels for wet-dry-tolerant thermal insulation.

Cellulose-based aerogels are promising sustainable thermal insulators, but their hydrophilic skeletons absorb moisture, causing capillary-shrinkage-induced collapse and insulation loss. Meanwhile, rigid hydrogen-bonded or ionically cross-linked networks fatigue under cyclic deformation. Inspired by reed structures, which integrate a water-repellent exterior with a lightweight porous interior, a two-step methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dual-siloxane strategy was developed to regulate wettability and junction flexibility in cellulose nanofibril/sodium alginate aerogels,

One-pot dual-crosslinked gelatin/alginate hydrogels for microstructure and texture regulation in 3D-printed meat analogues.

3D printing technology can precisely simulate the complex structure of natural meat, but balancing the viscosity and mechanical properties of printing inks remains challenging. This study proposes a one-pot dual-crosslinking strategy. CaCO3/GDL-mediated ionic crosslinking provides immediate structural support for 3D printing, while temperature regulation delays the TG enzyme crosslinking rate. This enables the interpenetration of covalent and ionic networks to form a composite network structure, ensuring long-term product stability. The effects of crosslinking sequence and gelatin concentratio

A slow-release ionic crosslinking strategy for a sprayable ceramifiable sodium alginate hydrogel toward sustainable wildfire suppression.

Developing spray-applied fire-retardant materials for wildfire suppression requires rapid deployment, effective surface retention, and sustained protection after water loss and during prolonged heating. This poses a significant challenge to traditional water-based fire-retardant materials, whose protective effectiveness often decreases as water evaporates. Herein, a sprayable ceramifiable sodium alginate-based hydrogel is developed, enabled by the gradual release of Ca2+ from the CaCO3/GDL system under ambient conditions. The hydrogel retained water for up to 17 h at 60 °C. Among all formulati

Folic acid-targeted chitosan-alginate blend nanoparticles for enhanced ixabepilone delivery and antitumor efficacy in breast cancer.

Ixabepilone (IXA) is a potent antineoplastic agent capable of overcoming tumor resistance in breast cancer; however, its clinical utility is limited by systemic toxicity and off-target effects. To address these limitations, IXA-loaded blend nanoparticles combining the advantages of targeted FACS and FAALG polymer systems (FACS-FAALG blend NPs) were developed and comprehensively characterized. The nanoparticles exhibited a mean size of 218.17 ± 6.9 nm and an encapsulation efficiency of 53.7 ± 7.7%. In vitro release studies conducted at pH 5.5, 6.5, and 7.4 demonstrated pH-responsive behavior, w

Gas-Shearing Microfluidic Fabrication of Alginate/Chitosan Hydrogel Microreactors for Genipin-Mediated Dual-Mode Lipase Immobilization.

Enzyme immobilization is an effective strategy to improve catalyst recovery and operational stability, but conventional approaches are often limited by diffusion resistance, steric hindrance, and insufficient control over the enzyme microenvironment. Hydrogel-based materials are attractive supports because their hydrated, tunable, and porous networks help preserve enzyme conformation while improving substrate diffusion and mass transfer. Here, a gas-shearing microfluidic strategy was developed to fabricate alginate/chitosan hydrogel microreactors for dual-mode lipase immobilization through ent

Pulsed Electric Field Enhanced Cross-Linking of Alginate and Fish Gelatin for Anti-Oxidative Activities and Entrapment of Nutrients.

Pulsed electric field (PEF) processing has emerged as a promising non-thermal technology capable of modifying biomolecular structures and enhancing functional properties in food systems. In this study, PEF was applied to fabricate cross-linked alginate-fish gelatin materials, and their structural characteristics, antioxidative activity, and nutrient entrapment capacity were compared with those produced using conventional homogenization. Structural analysis revealed that PEF processing generated smaller particle sizes (~80 nm) compared with homogenization (250-550 nm) and produced more compact
