A prospective study of amblyopic children was carried out in 1982-1992 in the ophthalmology unit of a community health center, a referral center for 14,000 preschool children. Here, we systematically explore the size and spacing requirements for identifying a letter among other letters. We measure acuity for flanked and unflanked letters, centrally and peripherally, in normals and amblyopes. We find that acuity, overlap masking, and crowding each demand a minimum size or spacing for readable text. Just measuring flanked and unflanked acuity is enough for our proposed model to predict the observer's threshold size and spacing for letters at any eccentricity. Visual acuity, the character of fixation, the angle of deviation, refraction, monocular determination of accommodation and blood supply of the ciliary body have been studied in 50 schoolchildren (100 eyes) with convergent strabismus and amblyopia of various degree. Children with amblyopia of high and moderate degrees have shown a sharp fall or absolute absence of the positive part of relative accommodation and reduced blood supply of the ciliary body. Between the mentioned indices and degree of amblyopia there exists a positive connexion.
