BACKGROUND: Entamoeba (E.) histolytica is an obligate parasite of humans and non-human primates.
METHODS: This report describes the pathomorphological, immunohistological, and microbiological findings of fatal E. histolytica infection in two mantled guerezas (Colobus guereza) and one Hanuman langur (Semnopithecus entellus) from an epizootic outbreak of amebiasis in an open-range recreation park.
RESULTS: Pathomorphological examination revealed multifocal necrotizing and granulomatous hepatitis with intralesional protozoan trophozoites in all three cases. In addition, necrotizing and ulcerati…

BACKGROUND: Stool microscopy, the commonly used test for diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis, is unreliable as it does not differentiate Entamoeba histolytica, the causative agent for amebiasis, from non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar and Entamoeba moshkovskii.
METHODS: Two hundred and forty-six stool samples collected between January to February 2009, were examined microscopically for E. histolytica/E. dispar/E. moshkovskii complex cysts and trophozoites. Nested multiplex PCR targeting a 16 S-like rRNA gene for differential detection of all the three morphologically similar forms of E. histolytic…

Twenty-eight cases of either intestinal amebiasis, amebic liver abscess, or both, most of which were of moderate-to-severe intensity, were treated with intravenous metronidazole, pioneered by the Research Group on Chemotherapy of Tropical Diseases, Japan. This study was not conducted as a formal clinical trial, and all patients either underwent colectomy for intestinal amebiasis, received oral metronidazole, or both. Despite these limitations, intravenous metronidazole was shown to be well tolerated and seemed to be very effective. This agent should be more widely recommended than previously t…

An open comparative, prospective and randomized study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy and safety of quinfamide and etofamide in the treatment of intestinal amebiasis. This study evaluate two populations: children (1-16 years) and adults (17-80 years). The drugs used were quinfamide at doses of 4.3 mg/kg b.i.d. in children, and 100 mg t.i.d. adults both for one day; and etofamide at doses of 200 mg t.i.d. in children and 500 mg b.i.d. in adults both for three days. A total of 110 patients were included, 54 in the quinfamide group and 56 in the etofamide group. No significant difference…

Ten cases of hepatic amoebiasis are notified in Bamako during 14 months among hospitalized adults. The diagnosis has aimed from clinical signs, specific antibodies seen through hemagglutination and echography. These patients are treated by tinidazole: 2 g/day in unique dose during 3-9 days. The duration of treatment depends on clinical evolution. In any cases the recovery is obtained within subsequent range from 1 to 9 months. This leading is compared with other treatments proposed in the literature. The briefness of treatment, its quick efficacy and the absence of secondary effects have helpe

The authors report a short but homogenous group of 23 cases (15 men and 8 women) of hepatic amebiasis in Yaoundé (Cameroun), all of them confirmed by immunology. They state 2 isolated fevers, 4 jaundices. Nearly all cases were treated by tinidazole with very fast and evident success. One patient was operated and died. The great interest of immunology is underlined for the diagnosis and we wish its generalization, particularly in tropical countries.

The authors have studied the effects of PGE1 on rats (Wistar strain) infected with Entamoeba histolytica, and inoculated with PGE1 either in massive dosage and killed after 3-5 and 7 days, or with daily minimum quantity of PGE1 and killed on days 7 and 15 after inoculation. The results show an inhibition effect of PGE1 on development and survival of amoebae in the coecum of rats inoculated with the two modalities described above. The fractionated dosage gives better results and less side effects.

We had the opportunity of studying an epidemic of autochthonous amoebiasis occurring in the autumn of 1974 in a small town of 4000 inhabitants 30 km from Grenoble. Attention was originally attracted by the occurrence in this town of two cases of hepatic amoebiasis and one of intestinal amoebiasis identified by rectoscopy. Systematic investigations (coproctic examinations and serological tests for amoebiasis by indirect antibody fluorescence) were then carried out on everyone in the locality with digestive disorders which were possibly referable to amoebiasis, and on the other members of their
