Molecular and morphological characterization of Austrodiplostomum ostrowskiae Dronen, 2009 (Digenea: Diplostomatidae), a parasite of cormorants in the Americas.

The diplostomid genus Austrodiplostomum currently contains two species, i.e. A. mordax and A. ostrowskiae. Adults of these species inhabit the intestine of cormorants of the genus Nannopterum, whereas larval forms (metacercariae) are found in the eyes (vitreous humor) of freshwater fishes. Records of both species have been established across a wide geographic range in the Americas. Diplostomid adults and metacercariae were collected from a wide geographical range that spans from south-eastern Mexico, southwards to Central and South America. Even though the diplostomid has been largely reported…

Phylogeography of West Nile virus: from the cradle of evolution in Africa to Eurasia, Australia, and the Americas.

West Nile virus (WNV) is the most widely distributed of the encephalitic flaviviruses and is a major cause of encephalitis, with isolates ob … many centuries ago, probably due to trade and exploration during the 19th century. Likewise, in the Americas, WNV was successfully introduced in 1999 and subsequently became endemic across most temperate regions of North America (NA). In contrast to previous suggestions, an isolate from the epidemic in Israel in 1998 was not the direct progenitor of the NA …

Multivariate discrimination between two cryptic Haemagogus species associated with the transmission of yellow fever virus in the Americas.

Mosquitoes of the genus Haemagogus are important vectors of yellow fever virus and other arboviruses and are the principal reservoirs of these viruses in nature. Haemagogus capricornii and Haemagogus janthinomys are closely related species between which females are morphologically cryptic. A morphometric study of these species was performed on male and female specimens from 14 municipalities in Brazil. Morphometric analyses were able to distinguish females. Multivariate morphometrics may be a useful tool for taxonomic studies of cryptic species in this group.

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among gastroenteritis-causing pathogens recovered in Europe and Latin America and Salmonella isolates recovered from bloodstream infections in North America and Latin America: report from the SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program (2003).

Gastroenteritis-causing pathogens are the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Complicating the clinical diarrhoea syndrome is the emergence of antimicrobial resistance among the responsible bacterial pathogens. The reported increases in fluoroquinolone resistance in Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter have been extremely worrisome considering the primary role of ciprofloxacin as a treatment. In this study, 1479 bacterial isolates from gastroenteritis infections were collected in Europe and Latin America, which included Salmonella spp. (834; 56%), Shigella spp. (311; 2

The Molecular Epidemiology of Hepatitis B Virus and Its Resistance-Associated Mutations in the Polymerase Gene in the Americas.

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus of major public health concern whose error-prone polymerase has driven the emergence of ten distinct genotypes and a multitude of resistance-associated mutations (RAMs). Herein, we conducted a retrospective observational study analyzing 8152 hepatitis B virus (HBV) sequences from 27 regions across the Americas, retrieved from GenBank, to construct a database and examine associations among HBV genotypes/subtypes, geographic distribution, resistance-associated mutations (RAMs), and resistance to nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) used in the treatment of chron…

Vaccination Week in the Americas: An Ongoing Initiative to Strengthen and Sustain Measles and Rubella Elimination in the Region.

Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) is a yearly regional initiative that promotes the benefits of vaccination to all persons in the region. In its 22-year history, more than 1.15 billion people have been reached under the framework of VWA across more than 40 countries and territories. This review examines multiple PAHO and WHO data points, documents and reports related to measles/rubella vaccination coverage and VWA since its inception. Its goal is to document the impact that the VWA has had in maintaining and accelerating measles and rubella disease elimination, in the context of PAHO's Di…

Phylogenetic Affinities of Uvulifer Spp. (Digenea: Diplostomidae) in the Americas with Description of Two New Species from Peruvian Amazon.

Uvulifer Yamaguti, 1934, is a genus of diplostomoidean digeneans that parasitizes kingfishers worldwide. Species have a Neascus-type metacercaria that encysts in or on fish intermediate hosts, often causing black spot disease. Only 3 prior studies published DNA sequence data for Uvulifer species with only 1 including a single named species (Uvulifer spinatus López-Jiménez, Pérez-Ponce de León, & García-Varela, 2018). Herein we describe 2 new species of Uvulifer from the green-and-rufous kingfisher, Chloroceryle inda (Linnaeus), collected in Peru ( Uvulifer batesi n. sp. and Uvulifer pequenae n

Lobomycosis-like disease in common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from Belize and Mexico: bridging the gap between the Americas.

Lobomycosis and lobomycosis-like diseases (LLD) (also: paracoccidioidomycosis) are chronic cutaneous infections that affect Delphinidae in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In the Americas, these diseases have been relatively well-described, but gaps still exist in our understanding of their distribution across the continent. Here we report on LLD affecting inshore bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Caribbean waters of Belize and from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean off the southwestern coast of Mexico. Photo-identification and catalog data gathered between 1992 and 2…

ITS-2 rDNA sequencing of Gnathostoma species (Nematoda) and elucidation of the species causing human gnathostomiasis in the Americas.

From several gnathostome species the complete internal transcribed spacer ITS-2 ribosomal DNA (rDNA) repeat sequence and a fragment of the 5.8S rDNA were obtained by direct polymerase chain reaction cycle-sequencing and silver-staining methods. The size of the complete ITS-1 sequence in agarose gel electrophoresis was also obtained. The ITS-2 enabled the differentiation of Gnathostoma spinigerum from Thailand and Gnathostoma binucleatum from Mexico and Ecuador and confirmed the validity of the latter. Assessment of vector microfilarial uptake as a comparatively non-invasive technique for monitoring onchocerciasis treatment campaigns in the Americas.

Since 1992, efforts have been made to combat onchocerciasis in Guatemala through mass distribution of ivermectin. The impact of the campaign is assessed by taking skin-snips from sentinel groups within selected communities. This method gives an estimate of the prevalence and intensity of infection, and thus the efficacy of the treatment. In some communities people are becoming reluctant to volunteer for skin-snipping, and so there is a need for an alternative technique that will give quantitative results. In most hyperendemic communities in Guatemala, biting blackflies are so ubiquitous that f

Identifying food environment policies and research needs in Latin America and the Caribbean: insights from the Community of Practice in Nutrition and Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (COLANSA).

BACKGROUND: Nutrition-related health issues remain a significant public health challenge in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where rapid transformations in food systems have contributed to increasing obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Government policies are key to shaping healthier food environments, but their implementation and evaluation vary widely across countries. This study aimed to identify national-level public policies that promote healthy food environments in the LAC region and to outline priority areas for research to strengthen their implementation, from the

Characterizing HIV risk among cisgender men in Latin America who report transgender women as sexual partners: HIV risk in Latin America men.

Cisgender men (CM) who report transgender women (TW) as sexual partners are an understudied population in the HIV epidemic in Latin America. The current study sought to characterize this group in a 2012 cross-sectional online survey of Latin American CM who were members of a sexual networking website for men who have sex with men (N = 11,847). Multivariable logistic regression models were fit to estimate demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial correlates of having a TW sexual partner and engaging in condomless sex. Overall, 0.9% (n = 106) reported a TW sexual partner in the last 12 months; o
