The correction of wall abdominal defects often requires the use of implants such as polypropylene meshes. In spite of presenting good tissue acceptance, these biomaterials can migrate to adjacent viscera, promote enterocutaneos fistulas, tissue adherence and visceral erosions. In this work, the barrier effect of chitosan films associated with polypropylene meshes on adhesion formation experimentally induced in Wistar rats was evaluated. The animals were divided into two groups with 10 animals each. Animals in the CPP group were implanted with chitosan films associated with polypropylene meshes

Inertial focusing has been utilized to advance assisted reproductive technologies (ART) for animal breeding and in vitro fertilization (IVF) by separating sperm cells from biofluids with complex cell backgrounds. While existing studies have aimed to design and optimize sperm separation devices, the fundamental mechanism behind the unique focusing behavior of sperm in spiral channels remains largely unknown: sperm cells focus near the outer wall, whereas most other cells focus near the inner wall. This is primarily due to the lack of a direct modelling scheme for capturing the detailed inertial

BACKGROUND: The bone-specific protein osteocalcin (OCN) is an established marker of vascular calcification and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) osteogenic trans-differentiation. Recent studies have revealed the regulatory function of externally administered OCN on atherosclerosis and vascular remodeling. However, the role of OCN in VSMCs involved in cell migration and neointima formation has not been clearly described.
METHODS: Rat carotid-artery balloon-injury was performed to induce neointima formation. OCN expression was detected in injured carotid arteries by western blot and immunofluo

OBJECTIVE: Thermal ablation is a commonly used therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nevertheless, inadequate ablation can lead to the survival of residual HCC, potentially causing rapid progression. The underlying mechanisms for this remain unclear. This study explores the molecular mechanism responsible for the rapid progression of residual HCC.
METHODS: We established an animal model of inadequate ablation in BALB/c nude mice and identified a key transcriptional regulator through high-throughput sequencing. Subsequently, we conducted further investigations on RAD21. We evaluated the

BACKGROUND: Intestinal fibrosis, one of the complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is associated with fistula and intestinal stricture formation. There are currently no treatments for fibrosis. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes have been proven to exert inhibitory and reversal effects in IBD and other organ fibrosis. In this study, we explored the role of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (hucMSC-Ex) in IBD-related fibrosis and its associated mechanism to provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of IBD-related intestinal fibrosis.

Dietary knowledge of migratory birds along their migration routes is fundamental for understanding ecological and evolutionary aspects of bird migration, how migrants select and repeatedly use specific non-breeding areas, accumulate fuel for migration and breeding, and assess carrying capacity at key sites in the migratory network. Local changes in food availability and foraging habitat have been shown to contribute to population declines in migratory shorebirds. Nevertheless, the diet of many migratory bird populations remains unknown at key migratory sites. We address this knowledge gap for

BACKGROUND: Programmed death-1 (PD-1) is critical in reprogramming tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) polarization and is associated with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) progression and prognosis. LUAD is the most common histological subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but checkpoint blockade response rates remain below 20 %. Understanding PD-1/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1)-TAM interactions in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is needed to improve outcomes.
METHODS: Of 90 enrolled patients, 80 with pathologically confirmed LUAD (biopsy or post-surgery, January 2017-January 2019) were

AbstractComplex interactions between animal migration and infection are increasingly recognized as important for shaping when and where wildlife are infectious. Bird migration may facilitate spatial spread of zoonotic pathogens but remains poorly understood, owing in part to limited seasonal sampling. Using serology for immunoglobulin Y antibodies, we evaluated seasonal exposure to West Nile virus (WNV) of American robins (Turdus migratorius) sampled monthly during 2021 and 2022 in Indiana and compared our seroprevalence results to those of robins from previous studies across North America usi…

Clinically, the immune checkpoint inhibitor anti-PD-1 antibody has shown a certain effect in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is limited to a small number of patients with HCC. This study aims to reveal whether carnosic acid nanocluster-based framework (CA-NBF) has a sensitization effect on anti-PD-1 antibody in the treatment of HCC at the cellular and animal levels. MHCC97H cells were treated with CA-NBF, anti-PD-1 and their combination. The effects of CA-NBF and anti-PD-1 on cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, invasion, and migration were evaluated by MTT assay,

BACKGROUND: Tumor cells of diffuse-type gastric cancer (DGC) are discohesive and infiltrate into the stroma as single cells or small subgroups, so the stroma significantly impacts DGC progression. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are major components of the tumor stroma. Here, we identified CAF-specific secreted molecules and investigated the mechanism underlying CAF-induced DGC progression.
METHODS: We conducted transcriptome analysis for paired normal fibroblast (NF)-CAF isolated from DGC patient tissues and proteomics for conditioned media (CM) of fibroblasts. The effects of fibroblast

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) have been widely used due to their unique properties. The OPFRs are mainly metabolized in the liver. However, whether the plasma level of OPFRs was involved in the progression of liver cancer remains unclear. Triphenyl phosphate (TPP) is one of the OPFRs that are mostly detected in environment. In this study, we performed CCK8, ATP, and EdU analyses to evaluate the effect of TPP at the concentrations at 0.025-12.8 μM on the proliferation, invasion, and migration of Hep3B, a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line. Tumor-bearing mouse model was used for

Activated fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) play a central role in the formation of synovial pannus and joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Targeting FLSs could be a potential therapeutic strategy. The objective of this study is to explore the role of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) in proliferation, migration and invasion of FLSs promoted by the sonic hedeghog (SHH) signaling pathway in patients with RA. Activation of SHH signaling was evaluated by real-time PCR and Western Blot. Levels of phosphorylation of JNK and c-Jun were detected by Western Blot. FLSs proliferation was quant

Liver inflammation as a response to injury is a highly dynamic process involving the infiltration of distinct subtypes of leukocytes including monocytes, neutrophils, T cell subsets, B cells, natural killer (NK) and NKT cells. Intravital microscopy of the liver for monitoring immune cell migration is particularly challenging due to the high requirements regarding sample preparation and fixation, optical resolution and long-term animal survival. Yet, the dynamics of inflammatory processes as well as cellular interaction studies could provide critical information to better understand the initiat

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma, X breakpoint 2 interacting protein (SSX2IP), which has been identified as an acute myeloid leukemia associated antigen, is a potential target for leukemia immunotherapy. In rodents, its homologous gene, ADIP, plays an important role in the regulation of cell adhesion and migration, underlying its potential role in promoting metastasis of other cancers.
METHODS: To investigate the correlation between the expression level of SSX2IP and the clinicopathologic factors of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 53 cases were studied by qPCR and statisted. To directly testing S

Cyathostomins are the most prevalent parasitic pathogens of equids worldwide. These nematodes have been controlled using broad-spectrum anthelmintics; however, cyathostomin resistance to each anthelmintic class has been reported and populations insensitive to more than one class are relatively commonplace. The faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) is considered the most suitable method for screening anthelmintic sensitivity in horses, but is subject to variation and is relatively time-consuming to perform. Here, we describe a larval migration inhibition test (LMIT) to assess ivermectin (IVM)

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are increasing in high-latitude oceans, yet behavioural responses of anadromous fishes to these potential stressors during short marine feeding seasons remain poorly understood. We combined acoustic telemetry (internal temperature and depth) with satellite-derived sea surface temperature data to quantify Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) responses to MHWs in the coastal Labrador Sea across two contrasting summers: 2023, with frequent early-season MHWs, and 2024, dominated by a late-season event. Using non-MHW detections, we fit seasonal baselines for each fish and calcul
