We investigated the neurobehavioral development, sexual maturation and fertility of the offspring of MA-treated rats. OBJECTIVE: To compare the parasitological and clinical efficacy of four weeks versus two weeks of treatment with aminosidine (paromomycin) ointment in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
METHODS: Double-blind, randomized trial of four weeks of aminosidine ointment (n = 108) vs two weeks of aminosidine ointment and two weeks of placebo (n = 108). Patients were assessed on days 15, 29, 45, and 105 for clinical cures and clinical and parasitological cures.

The history of a Moroccan girl is described with splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and pancytopenia after a holiday in her native country. Bone marrow smears were considered negative for Leishmaniasis in four different laboratories. All other diagnostic options could also not be confirmed. Reexamination of the bone marrow smears in a laboratory for tropical diseases revealed Leishmania donovani organisms. Treatment with sodium antimony gluconate was successful. Epidemiology, symptoms and diagnostic problems are discussed.

A number of metals are mutagenic in bacteria or phage. These include compounds of arsenic, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, platinum, and selenium. Compounds containing alumium, antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and tellium have been shown to induce chromosomal aberrations or abnormal cell divisions in animal or plant cells. Genetic evidence suggests that arsenic, chromium, and molybdenum compounds may influence the accuracy of DNA repair processes in microorganisms.

It has been done a bibliographic review of Salvadorean scientific works on leishmaniasis cutaneous from January 1900 to June 1984. The skin manifestation is not an epidemiologic problem up to now. It is possible that insecticides, used on cotton and coffee crops, as well as in the fight against malaria, etc., play a definite role. Instead of antimony components, it is suggested the use of phosphate of chloroquine inter-lesional.

Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis is not only a children disease. We observed 12 adult cases since 1971. Clinical presentation usually associates anarchic fever and splenomegaly, with anaemia, leucopenia, increased sedimentation rate and hypergammaglobulinemia. We must think to kala-azar, specially after a stay in an endemic country (mediterranean area), ask for parasites on bone-marrow smears and more often immunological diagnosis. Spontaneously fatal, the disease is easily cured by antimony derivatives.

Visceral leishmaniasis is the disease of poor; however availability of only expensive treatment of this disease impinges the socioeconomic condition of those affected. If untreated, almost all cases of visceral leishmaniasis are fatal.
