Content validation of the Adapted Cycles Intervention Program (PROCICLOS-A) for children with Speech Sound Disorder - Activities.

PURPOSE: This document aims to describe and validate the activities of the Adapted Cycles Intervention Program (PROCICLOS-A) for children with speech sound disorders. METHOD: The study employs a prospective, cross-sectional design focusing on quantitative analysis. PROCICLOS-A consists of 12 sessions, with a specific phonological process selected as the target for every six sessions. In total, two phonological processes and two target sounds are chosen for each cycle, resulting in four target sounds for the intervention. Each of the 12 sessions includes six types of activities: auditory bomba

Tri-lobed Tongue: Rare Manifestation Accompany With Pierre Robin Sequence.

BACKGROUND: The tongue is an essential organ accounted for proper deglutition and articulation. Surgical repair should be planned soon after diagnosis of any structural abnormality to prevent later speech and swallowing disorders. The lobulated tongue could be isolated (sporadic) or in association with other disorders. Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) consists of the clinical trial of congenital micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction with variable inclusion of a cleft palate. We present the case of a rare congenital tri-lobed tongue with Pierre Robin sequence and its surgical management

Effects of recurrent otitis media in infancy on auditory perception and speech.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent otitis media is commonly encountered in children before 3 years of age. Conductive hearing loss up to 40 dB is frequently associated with suppurative otitis media. Good hearing is believed to be critical to the development of normal language. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of recurrent otitis media on auditory perception and speech. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 33 children with a history of at least three episodes of acute otitis media before 2 years of age. A control group of 29 children experienced one or fewer episodes

Speech and language therapy versus placebo or no intervention for speech problems in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease patients commonly suffer from speech and vocal problems including dysarthric speech, reduced loudness and loss of articulation. These symptoms increase in frequency and intensity with progression of the disease). Speech and language therapy (SLT) aims to improve the intelligibility of speech with behavioural treatment techniques or instrumental aids. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of speech and language therapy versus placebo or no intervention for speech and voice problems in patients with Parkinson's disease. SEARCH METHODS: Relevant trials were identif

A transactional model of oppositional behavior: underpinnings of the Collaborative Problem Solving approach.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) refers to a recurrent pattern of developmentally inappropriate levels of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. ODD is one of the most common (and debilitating) comorbid disorders within Tourette's disorder (TD). Diverse psychosocial treatment approaches have been applied to children's ODD-related behaviors. In this paper, the authors articulate a transactional developmental conceptualization of oppositional behavior and describe a cognitive-behavioral model of intervention-called collaborative problem solving (CPS

End-word dysfluencies in young children: a clinical report.

OBJECTIVE: We report on 12 children with end-word dysfluencies (EWDs). Our aim was to document this little-reported type of dysfluency and to develop a possible explanation for them and how they relate to developmental stuttering. METHOD: Audio recordings were made for 9 of the 12 children in the study. The EWDs were identified by consensus of two specialist speech pathologists and confirmed on acoustic displays. A segment of participant 1's speech was transcribed, including phonetic transcription of EWDs. RESULTS: The EWDs typically consisted of repetitions of the nucleus and/or the coda. H

Evaluation of a new concept of myofunctional therapy in children.

This prospective study was designed to evaluate a new concept of myofunctional therapy in comparison with conventional myofunctional therapy. 45 children aged three to sixteen years in need of myofunctional therapy were randomly divided into two groups: 19 children were referred to myofunctional therapy in private practices in Hamburg and served as controls. The remaining 26 children were treated with face former therapy at the Department of Orthodontics by a medical assistant specializing in myofunctional therapy. The overall observation time was six months. Every three months an overall clin

Impact of malocclusion and orthognathic reconstruction surgery on resonance and articulatory function: an examination of variability in five cases.

Articulatory patterns and nasal resonance were assessed before and 6 months after orthognathic reconstruction surgery in five patients with dentofacial deformities. Perceptual and physiological assessments showed disorders of nasality and articulatory function preoperatively, two patients being hyponasal, and one hypernasal. Four patients had mild articulatory deficits, and four had reduced maximal lip or tongue pressures. Operation resulted in different patterns of change. Nasality deteriorated in three patients and articulatory precision and intelligibility improved in only one patient and s

[Language development in children with cleft palate].

Children with cleft palate often suffer from hearing and speech and language problems. Detailed knowledge about the long-term outcome of various therapeutic strategies including velopharyngoplasty or speech therapy seems mandatory to design an efficient rehabilitation plan for affected children. In this follow-up study 417 children with cleft palate (excluding isolated cleft lip) were examined in an interdisciplinary approach by maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, audiologists and speech and language pathologists. We found that 92% of the children had speech or language d

Age of diagnosis and evaluation of consequences of submucous cleft palate.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of submucous cleft palate (SMCP) in a group of children with clefts. The reason for suspecting submucous cleft, age of diagnosis, effect of age on speech development, problems in speech, hearing and swallowing were compared with previous literature. METHODS: Retrospective chart review: Out of 33 patients with SMCP, registered by the Groninger cleft team over approximately 20 years (1990 until July 2012), 28 non-syndromic patients with a proven diagnosis of SMCP were included: 17 males and 11 females. Speech and hearing were examined and the number of pati

Temporal processing deficits in Hebrew speaking children with reading disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to assess to what extent specific reading disabilities and poor phonologic processing in children who read Hebrew, a primarily consonant orthography, are related to central auditory temporal processing deficits (TPDs).Twenty-four Hebrew-speaking children (ages 10-13) with and without reading disabilities were asked to discriminate auditorily pairs of syllables (/ba/ vs. /pa/) that differ by voice onset time (VOT) only. Two paradigms were used, 1 with a short interstimulus interval (ISI) (50 ms) and 1 with a long ISI (500 ms). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were m

Facial animation in children with Möbius syndrome after segmental gracilis muscle transplant.

Möbius syndrome is a complex congenital anomaly involving multiple cranial nerves, including the abducens (VI) and facial (II) nerves, and often associated with limb anomalies. Muscle transplantation has been used to address the lack of facial animation, lack of lower lip support, and speech difficulties these patients experience. The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of bilateral, segmental gracilis muscle transplantation to the face using the facial vessels for revascularization and the motor nerve to the masseter for reinnervation. The outcome of the two-stage procedure w

Residual clefts in the hard palate: correlation between cleft size and speech.

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between size of residual clefts in the hard palate and speech. SUBJECTS: Fifteen 7-year-old children born with complete cleft lip and palate were investigated. METHODS: All of the children were treated according to a surgical regimen involving early soft palate repair and delayed hard palate closure. Measures were taken of the area, length, and maximal width of the residual cleft in the hard palate about a year before its closure and correlated with a perceptual judgment of several speech variables. RESULTS: Significant positi

Superordinate Concepts - Semantic Sources, Cognitive Properties and Neural Representation.

Concepts are cognitive constructs that are fundamental to neuroscience. Superordinate concepts such as world, life, and person are widely used in common language but typically ill-defined. In an interdisciplinary approach we present superordinate concepts as three-part accounts that encompass the articulated concepts of objects, events, and narratives. Thereby, superordinate concepts integrate the physical, relational, and narrated nature of our environmental information into comprehensive verbal expressions. Owing to their distributed representations in large-scale neural networks that in add

Use of a Mechanical Forearm Holder During Elbow Arthroscopy in Lateral Decubitus Position.

Proper patient positioning is a key consideration when performing elbow arthroscopy. The lateral decubitus position for arthroscopic management of a variety of elbow disorders has recently gained popularity among elbow surgeons. There are several advantages of the lateral decubitus position. However, the elbow rests in 90° of flexion with the hand hanging free, and an assistant is required to maintain any adjustment to the elbow's flexion angle. This article describes how a commercially available low-profile multi-articulated mechanical upper-limb holder may be used as a mechanical forearm hol

Diagnostic overshadowing: self-injurious behaviour as a manifestation of pain in the head and neck.

In the healthcare domain, diagnostic overshadowing is a concerning issue involving the erroneous attribution of physical symptoms to a patient's mental health, behavioural intricacies, or pre-existing disabilities. Individuals facing learning and communication challenges are particularly susceptible to this phenomenon, struggling to articulate or comprehend their experienced symptoms. Likewise, patients with autism spectrum disorder can have an escalated risk due to possible challenges in interpreting bodily cues. This article delves into the specialised care required for individuals with lear

Re-Addressing Dementia by Network Medicine and Mechanism-Based Molecular Endotypes.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia are together a leading cause of disability and death in the aging global population, imposing a high personal, societal, and economic burden. They are also among the most prominent examples of failed drug developments. Indeed, after more than 40 AD trials of anti-amyloid interventions, reduction of amyloid-β (Aβ) has never translated into clinically relevant benefits, and in several cases yielded harm. The fundamental problem is the century-old, brain-centric phenotype-based definitions of diseases that ignore causal mechanisms and comorbidi

Spinning, hurting, still, afraid: Living life spaces with Type I Chiari Malformation.

Human geography's varied engagement with the brain has involved considerations of the way people know and respond to their environments, and their place-based experiences with emotions, mental illnesses and disorders, intellectual disabilities and particular neurological conditions. This paper argues however that this scholarship could be augmented by, and existing expertise be directed towards, considering physical brain abnormalities and injuries. As a case in point it considers the spatial experience of living with Type 1 Chiari Malformation. Through interviews with four sufferers, the rese
