The effects of combined epidural and general anesthesia on the autonomic nervous system and bioavailability of nitric oxide in patients undergoing laparoscopic pelvic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Pneumoperitoneum during laparoscopic surgery is known to affect visceral blood flow and result in oxidative stress. Whether epidural anesthesia will effectively reduce visceral ischemia and oxidative stress by blocking the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) during laparoscopic surgery has not been proven. METHODS: Forty-five patients who were to undergo robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy were randomly assigned to the combined general-epidural anesthesia group (group GE, n = 22) or to the general anesthesia group (group G, n = 23). Blood pressure, heart rate, and the balance b

THE INFLUENCE OF MONTELUKAST ON THE ACTIVITY OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM ESTIMATED BY HEART RATE VARIABILITY IN EXPERIMENTAL PARTIAL BLADDER OUTLET OBSTRUCTION IN RATS.

Due to their paracrine action, leukotrienes released from the urothelium are involved in control of the bladder function. Anti-leukotriene agents appear to exert an ameliorating effect in bladder overactivity. It is unknown, whether their possible, modulatory impact on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may also contribute to the potentially beneficial effect of those compounds. Therefore, our aim was to indirectly estimate the ANS function using the heart rate variability (HRV) study in rats with experimental partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO), reflecting human benign prostati…

BOTULISM. STUDIES ON THE MANNER IN WHICH THE TOXIN OF CLOSTRIDIUM BOTULINUM ACTS UPON THE BODY : I. THE EFFECT UPON THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM.

A survey of the results of these experiments shows, we believe conclusively, that in botulinus intoxication in cats, dogs, and rabbits there is a specific effect upon the portions of the autonomic nervous system which Gaskell (14) described as the bulbosacral and prosomatic outflows of connector fibers respectively, which results in a blocking of the nerve impulses of these nerves. The experimental as well as the clinical evidence indicates that there is no damage to the nerves of the thoracicolumbar outflow. The exact location of the damage has not been ascertained nor has the mechanism by wh…

Effects of a programmed reflexology therapy on sleep quality, insomnia, and fatigue among individuals with poor sleep quality: evidence for autonomic nervous system modulation.

Poor sleep quality is closely associated with autonomic dysregulation and increased risks of cardiovascular, metabolic, and mental disorders. Foot reflexology is a widely used complementary therapy; however, its physiological mechanisms and comparative efficacy remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to compare the effects of manual reflexology treatment (MRT) and foot massage equipment (FEM) on autonomic nervous system function, sleep quality, insomnia severity, and fatigue in adults with poor sleep quality. Using a randomized crossover design, 32 participants with poor sleep quality…

The autonomic nervous system-lung interface in experimental BPD: NPY modulates immune response, alveolar growth and vascular muscularizationin neonatal mice exposed to oxidative stress.

Oxygen supplementation triggers inflammation and disrupts alveolar and microvascular growth in preterm infants, often leading to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is critical in lung tissue homeostasis and repair. The sympathetic co-neurotransmitter neuropeptide Y (NPY) emerges as a central regulator of the ANS-organ interface with immune-modulatory function. Here, we studied sympathetic nervous system (SNS) signaling and the contribution of NPY to a hyperoxia-based model of BPD. To this end, neonatal wild-type (WT) and NPY knockout mice (NPY-/-) were exposed…

Reference gene recommendations and PACAP receptor expression in murine sympathetic ganglia of the autonomic nervous system that innervate adipose tissues after chronic cold exposure.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is an important regulator of the stress response in mammals, influencing both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). PACAP has been reported to influence energy homeostasis, including adaptive thermogenesis, an energy burning process in adipose tissue regulated by the SNS in response to cold stress and overfeeding. While research suggests PACAP acts centrally at the level of the hypothalamus, knowledge of PACAP's role within the sympathetic nerves innervating adipose tissues in response

Bladder Neuromodulation in Acute Spinal Cord Injury via Transcutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation: Cystometrogram and Autonomic Nervous System Evidence From a Randomized Control Pilot Trial.

Aim: Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation is used to decrease incontinence in chronic neurogenic bladder. We report the findings from a subset of patients in a randomized control trial of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) for bladder neuromodulation in acute spinal cord injury (SCI) in whom heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded before and after cystometrogram (CMG). The aim was to correlate autonomic nervous system (ANS) changes associated with the CMG changes after the trial using HRV analyses. Methods: The study was a double-blinded sham-controlled 2-week trial with consecu…

Mental stress peripheral vascular reactivity is elevated in women with coronary vascular dysfunction: Results from the NHLBI-sponsored Cardiac Autonomic Nervous System (CANS) study.

BACKGROUND: Women with chest pain, ischemia, and no obstructive coronary artery disease often have coronary vascular dysfunction (CVaD). Peripheral vascular reactivity to mental stress may contribute mechanistic understanding of stress-induced ischemia in women with CVaD. METHODS: 62 women (41 CVaD and 21 controls) underwent mental stress testing (MST) with anger recall, mental arithmetic, and forehead cold pressor (COP) challenge. Emotional arousal was measured (Likert scale). Reactive hyperemia index (RHI) was calculated before and after MST by peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT). Stress PA

Assessment of respiratory disturbance index determined with a non-restrictive monitor and of autonomic nervous system parameters in heart failure patients: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: There is a link between sympathetic overactivity and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), and both of which are important indicators of the development of heart failure. To manage the increasing numbers of heart failure patients, any method used to check for them needs to be as non-invasive, simple, and cost-effective as possible. The purpose of this study is to assess screening of SDB with a non-restrictive monitor and the autonomic nervous system in heart failure patients. METHODS: The subjects were 49 patients (mean age: 67 years; male: 78%) hospitalized for worsening heart failur…

Topological changes of the human autonomic cardiac nervous system in individuals with a retroesophageal right subclavian artery: two case reports and a brief review.

The topological changes of the human autonomic cardiac nervous system in two cadavers with a retroesophageal right subclavian artery (Rersa) were compared with the normal autonomic cardiac nervous system. The following new results were obtained in addition to the conventional deficient finding of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve. (1) Right superior cardiac nerves arising from the superior cervical ganglion were consistently observed in both cadavers, in addition to the right thoracic cardiac nerves along the Rersa. (2) A segmental accompanying tendency of the right cardiac nerves was recogn

Acute effects of aerobic versus anaerobic running on heart rate variability and autonomic nervous system indices in male college athletes: a within-subject comparison.

BACKGROUND: During rhythmic exercise, overall, heart rate variability (HRV) decreases with increasing intensity, and resting measurements do not reliably reflect responses during activity. Nonneural oscillations in the high-frequency band caused by increased respiratory effort further complicate HRV interpretation. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) balance, particularly between parasympathetic and sympathetic activity, is crucial for optimal athletic performance, highlighting the importance of non-invasive assessments. This study aimed to examine the acute effects of aerobic versus anaerobic runn…

Autonomic nervous system and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: a study based on the analysis of RR interval changes before, during and after paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: To evaluate the presence of an abnormal autonomic modulation before, during and immediately after paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed Holter recordings of 65 patients with 110 PAF episodes lasting more then 30 s. Mean RR interval, co-efficient of variation and short-term heart rate variability were measured before, during and after PAF episodes. We observed a significant correlation between the coupling interval and both the cycle length measured from 30 min up to few cycles before PAF onset, and ventricular response. When comparing the heart rate vari

Evaluation of the autonomic nervous system of the heart in male patients with mitral valve prolapse syndrome using respiratory sinus arrhythmia and dynamic exercise.

The autonomic nervous system of the heart was evaluated in two male groups composed of 11 patients with mitral valve prolapse and of 10 normal subjects, using the heart rate response in two types of tests: respiratory sinus arrhythmia at rest and dynamic exercise. Sinus arrhythmia was of higher magnitude in patients with mitral valve prolapse when compared to the control group; however, the differences reached statistical significance only at a respiratory frequency of 7 cycles/min. With respect to dynamic exercise (25, 50, 100, 150 W during 4 min), the heart rate response, either in terms of …
