The role of the differential outcomes procedure and schizotypy in the recognition of dynamic facial expressions of emotions.

Emotional facial expression recognition is a key ability for adequate social functioning. The current study aims to test if the differential outcomes procedure (DOP) may improve the recognition of dynamic facial expressions of emotions and to further explore whether schizotypal personality traits may have any effect on performance. 183 undergraduate students completed a task where a face morphed from a neutral expression to one of the six basic emotions at full intensity over 10 s. Participants had to press spacebar as soon as they identified the emotion and choose which had appeared. In the f

Identification of genomic regions associated with resistance to gastrointestinal parasites in an indigenous sheep by single- and multiple-locus methods.

We investigated the association between 157 SNPs located in 75 candidate genes involved in the immune system and proxy traits for resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. A total of 211 lambs from eight flocks were sampled. Nematode eggs per gram were counted and classified as: (i) Strongyles, (ii) Nematodirus spp., (iii) Trichuris spp. and (iv) Marshallagia marshalli. Single- and multiple-locus models were used to test the marker-trait associations. Seven significant SNPs were identified on chromosomes OAR6, 15, 16, and 19. These findings provide insights for breeding nemarode-resis

Highest correlations between emotion regulation strategies and mood symptoms in bipolar disorder: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with alterations in emotion regulation (ER) strategies, with both depressive and (hypo)manic symptoms correlated with utilization of maladaptive instead of adaptive strategies. However, which ER strategies are the most affected during the most severe mood symptoms remains unclear despite the potentially relevant treatment implications. To this end, we conducted a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) of studies documenting correlations between ER and depressive and (hypo)manic symptoms of BD, from inception until November 9th, 2023. We i

A new perspective on positive symptoms: expression of damage or self-defence mechanism of the brain?

Usually, positive neurological symptoms are considered as the consequence of a mere, afinalistic and abnormal increase in function of specific brain areas. However, according to the Theory of Active Inference, which argues that action and perception constitute a loop that updates expectations according to a Bayesian model, the brain is rather an explorer that formulates hypotheses and tests them to assess the correspondence between internal models and reality. Moreover, the cerebral cortex is characterised by a continuous "conflict" between different brain areas, which constantly attempt to ex

Bayesian reinforcement learning: A basic overview.

We and other animals learn because there is some aspect of the world about which we are uncertain. This uncertainty arises from initial ignorance, and from changes in the world that we do not perfectly know; the uncertainty often becomes evident when our predictions about the world are found to be erroneous. The Rescorla-Wagner learning rule, which specifies one way that prediction errors can occasion learning, has been hugely influential as a characterization of Pavlovian conditioning and, through its equivalence to the delta rule in engineering, in a much wider class of learning problems. Effects of IV fluid restriction according to site-specific intensity of standard fluid treatment-protocol.

BACKGROUND: Variation in usual practice in fluid trials assessing lower versus higher volumes may affect overall comparisons. To address this, we will evaluate the effects of heterogeneity in treatment intensity in the Conservative versus Liberal Approach to Fluid Therapy of Septic Shock in Intensive Care trial. This will reflect the effects of differences in site-specific intensities of standard fluid treatment due to local practice preferences while considering participant characteristics. METHODS: We will assess the effects of heterogeneity in treatment intensity across one primary (all-ca

Methylmercury Effects on Birds: A Review, Meta-Analysis, and Development of Toxicity Reference Values for Injury Assessment Based on Tissue Residues and Diet.

Birds are used as bioindicators of environmental mercury (Hg) contamination, and toxicity reference values are needed for injury assessments. We conducted a comprehensive review, summarized data from 168 studies, performed a series of Bayesian hierarchical meta-analyses, and developed new toxicity reference values for the effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on birds using a benchmark dose analysis framework. Lethal and sublethal effects of MeHg on birds were categorized into nine biologically relevant endpoint categories and three age classes. Effective Hg concentrations where there was a 10% redu

Medication use and risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: using machine learning for an exposome-wide screen of a large clinical database.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that non-genetic factors have important etiologic roles in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), yet identification of specific culprit factors has been challenging. Many medications target biological pathways implicated in ALS pathogenesis, and screening large pharmacologic datasets for signals could greatly accelerate the identification of risk-modulating pharmacologic factors for ALS. METHOD: We conducted a high-dimensional screening of patients' history of medication use and ALS risk using an advanced machine learning approach based on gradient-bo

Gaussian process emulation to improve efficiency of computationally intensive multidisease models: a practical tutorial with adaptable R code.

BACKGROUND: The rapidly growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has expanded the number of multidisease models predicting future care needs and health system priorities. Usefulness of these models depends on their ability to replicate real-life data and be readily understood and applied by public health decision-makers; yet existing simulation models of HIV comorbidities are computationally expensive and require large numbers of parameters and long run times, which hinders their utility in resource-constrained settings. Spatiotemporal patterns and risk mapping of provincial hand, foot, and mouth disease in mainland China, 2014-2017.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has remained a serious public health threat since its first outbreak in China. Analyzing the province-level spatiotemporal distribution of HFMD and mapping the relative risk in mainland China will help determine high-risk provinces and periods of infection outbreaks for use in formulating new priority areas for prevention and control of this disease. Furthermore, our study examined the effect of air pollution on HFMD nationwide, which few studies have done thus far. METHODS: Data were collected on the number of provincial monthly HFMD infection

Spatiotemporal Distribution of Human Rabies and Identification of Predominant Risk Factors in China from 2004 to 2020.

Human rabies is a prevalent issue in China, posing a significant public health concern in the country. This study fitted the Bayesian model of separable in spatial and temporal variation and inseparable spatiotemporal variation in disease risk respectively based on Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation (INLA) to investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics of human rabies across 31 provinces in China from 2004 to 2020. It also investigated the influence of natural and socio-environmental factors on the incidence of the disease. Within the study period, a total of 26,807 cases of human rabi

Identifying key multifunctional components shared by critical cancer and normal liver pathways via SparseGMM.

Despite the abundance of multimodal data, suitable statistical models that can improve our understanding of diseases with genetic underpinnings are challenging to develop. Here, we present SparseGMM, a statistical approach for gene regulatory network discovery. SparseGMM uses latent variable modeling with sparsity constraints to learn Gaussian mixtures from multiomic data. By combining coexpression patterns with a Bayesian framework, SparseGMM quantitatively measures confidence in regulators and uncertainty in target gene assignment by computing gene entropy. We apply SparseGMM to liver cancer

The osteology of the Late Triassic reptile Scleromochlus taylori from μCT data.

Scleromochlus taylori is one of the most enigmatic members of the herpetofauna from the Lossiemouth Sandstone Formation (Upper Triassic) of Elgin (Moray, Scotland). For many years it was thought to be closely related to pterosaurs and dinosaurs, but the anatomy of this animal is difficult to interpret because of the notoriously poor preservation of the six available specimens, which comprise void space in the sandstone after the bones were destroyed by diagenesis. Historically, these fossils have been studied using physical molds, which provide only incomplete, and potentially distorted, infor

Individual participant data from digital sources informed and improved precision in the evaluation of predictive biomarkers in Bayesian network meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to develop a network meta-analytic model for the evaluation of treatment effectiveness within predictive biomarker subgroups, by combining evidence from individual participant data (IPD) from digital sources (in the absence of randomized controlled trials) and aggregate data (AD). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A Bayesian framework was developed for modeling time-to-event data to evaluate predictive biomarkers. IPD were sourced from electronic health records, using a target trial emulation approach, or digitized Kaplan-Meier curves. The model is illustrated using two examples:

Pharmacological prevention of postoperative delirium in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: a bayesian network meta-analysis.

The incidence of postoperative delirium in patients undergoing cardiac surgery is very high and increases morbidity and mortality. The possibility of pharmacological means to reduce its incidence is very attractive. At present, there is still no clear demonstration that any drug can prevent postoperative delirium in these patients. The aim of this Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) was to evaluate whether there is evidence that a drug is effective in reducing the incidence of POD in cardiac surgical patients. Our NMA showed that preoperative ketamine at subanesthetic doses can significantly
