A dynamic model-based framework to test the effectiveness of biocontrol targeting a new plant invader- the case of Alternanthera philoxeroides in the Iberian Peninsula.

Biological invasions are one of the major threats to biodiversity at the global scale, causing numerous environmental impacts and having high direct and indirect costs associated with their management, control and eradication. In this work, we present a system-dynamic modelling approach for the biocontrol of the invasive plant species Alternanthera philoxeroides using its natural predator, Agasicles hygrophila, as a biocontrol agent. We have simulated different scenarios in the Finisterre region (Spain), where a single population of the invasive plant has been recently described. To assess the

Stomatal biology meets multimodal foundation model-driven AI.

Stomata regulate plant growth and environmental responses through their control of gas exchange and transpiration. However, high-throughput stomatal phenotyping and the integration of phenotypic, genetic, and multiomics data remain major challenges for biological discovery and for understanding stomatal function in plants. Here, we review emerging imaging technologies and foundation models for stomatal biology and discuss how advances in AI could transform plant stomatal research. The rapid accumulation of large-scale phenotypic, genetic, and omics datasets requires systematic integration of h

Engineered Polymer-Supported Biorthogonal Nanocatalysts Using Flash Nanoprecipitation.

Transition-metal catalysts (TMCs) effect bioorthogonal transformations that enable the generation of therapeutic agents in situ, minimizing off-target effects. The encapsulation of insoluble TMCs into polymeric nanoparticles to generate "polyzymes" has vastly expanded their applicability in biological environments by enhancing catalyst solubility and stability. However, commonly used precipitation approaches provide limited encapsulation efficiency in polyzyme fabrication and result in a low catalytic activity. Herein, we report the creation of polyzymes with increased catalyst loading and opt

Human Derived Exosome Injections (ASCE+ vs. CELLEXOSOME) Enhance Collagen Remodeling and Angiogenesis in Intact Skin: A Comparative Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Exosomes derived from human cells have emerged as promising biological agents for enhancing skin quality through stimulation of collagen remodeling and angiogenesis. While their role in wound healing is well established, their effects on intact, non-injured skin remain insufficiently investigated. Their biological activity depends on their molecular cargo, including growth factors, extracellular matrix-modulating proteins, and angiogenic microRNAs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of intradermal injection of two human-derived exosome formulations on dermal architecture and vascul

Comparison of Autologous Conditioned Serum and Platelet-Rich Plasma Following Arthrocentesis in Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) is a degenerative condition that negatively affects quality of life. Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely used, its efficacy remains controversial. Autologous conditioned serum (ACS), which targets inflammation via interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), has emerged as a novel biological therapy. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of two autologous biological agents, PRP and ACS, used as adjuncts to arthrocentesis, on pain, maximum mouth opening (MMO) and joint sounds in patients with TMJ-OA. METHODS: This randomized, si

Emerging drugs for the treatment of uveitis.

INTRODUCTION: Uveitis is a potentially visually debilitating disease when untreated or poorly controlled. Chronic intermediate, posterior, or panuveitis often requires systemic immunosuppressive therapy to prevent such visual loss. AREAS COVERED: This review discusses existing treatments for ocular inflammation including corticosteroids, antimetabolites, alkylating agents, T-cell inhibitors, and biologic agents. Potential drugs being studied in clinical trials are introducing new routes for local corticosteroid delivery, and novel immunomodulators are exploring new targets of the inflammatory

Physical and biological fate of protozoan (oo)cysts in slow sand filtration: A review.

Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of waterborne disease globally, in part due to its chlorine-resistant oocysts, low infectious dose, and ability to cause widespread outbreaks. Multiple barriers are employed in drinking water treatment to reduce risks from Cryptosporidium and other pathogens. Slow sand filtration (SSF), a low-carbon drinking water treatment system, has widely varying log removal values (LRVs) (0.09 to >7.2-log; median 2.64-log across published studies). This has been attributed to filter maturity, sand grain size, filter depth, and hydraulic loading rates. Additional enhancem

Treatment options for pemphigus foliaceus.

Pemphigus foliaceus belongs to a group of rare autoimmune blistering mucocutaneous conditions. Systemic corticosteroids have markedly reduced the mortality from the disease but its utility is restricted by adverse events. This is further complicated by the fact that steroid-sparing agents are also associated with serious adverse events and there are only few randomized controlled trials demonstrating a beneficial response from the use of these agents. Azathioprine and mycophenolate mofetil appear to be the most feasible first line adjunctive agents in terms of inducing and maintaining remissio

Recognition and management of bioterrorism infections.

Recent events have demonstrated that bioterrorists have the ability to disseminate biologic agents in the United States and cause widespread social panic. Family physicians would play a key role in the initial recognition of a potential bioterrorism attack. Familiarity with the infectious agents of highest priority can expedite diagnosis and initial management, and lead to a successful public health response to such an attack. High-priority infectious agents include anthrax, smallpox, plague, tularemia, botulism, and viral hemorrhagic fever. Anthrax and smallpox must be distinguished from such

Application of PMCA to screen for prion infection in a human cell line used to produce biological therapeutics.

Advances in biotechnology have led to the development of a number of biological therapies for the treatment of diverse human diseases. Since these products may contain or are made using human or animal (e.g. cattle) derived materials, it is crucial to test their safety by ensuring the absence of infectious agents; specifically prions, which are highly resilient to elimination and produce fatal diseases in humans. Many cases of iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have been caused by the use of biological materials (e.g. human growth hormone) contaminated with prions. For this reason, it is imp

Discovery of novel sulfonamide derivatives containing pinacolone moieties as fungicide candidates against Botrytis cinerea.

BACKGROUND: Botrytis cinerea is one of the most serious plant diseases and severely threatens agricultural production. The rapidly intensifying resistance makes most commercial chemical fungicides lose control efficacy. Developing new fungicides with novel structures and modes of action is an effective measure to solve this problem. RESULTS: In this work, 29 novel sulfonamide compounds containing pinacolone scaffolds were designed and synthesized based on the active substructure splicing strategy. The biological activity assay on three kinds of Botrytis cinerea strains manifested that these c

Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp Successfully Treated with a Combination of Ixekizumab and Tofacitinib.

AIM: Dissecting Cellulitis of the Scalp (DCS) is a rare form of neutrophilic primary cicatricial alopecia (PCA). It usually occurs in black males and is less commonly reported in Asian populations. There are no systematic treatment guidelines for this disease, the hypothetical co-pathogenesis of DCS and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has led to the fact that most of the current biological therapies for DCS are based on the experience of HS, such as biologics and JAK inhibitors. Both agents alone have been reported in the treatment of HS and DCS, but the efficacy is uncertain. For severely refra

Biological treatment of acute agitation or aggression with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder in the inpatient setting.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia and bipolar disorders are chronic illnesses that commonly present with symptoms of acute agitation and aggression. These symptoms must be managed rapidly to prevent potential harm to the patient and others, including their caregivers, peers, and health care workers. A number of treatment options are available to clinicians to manage acute agitation and aggression, including non-pharmacologic behavioral and environmental de-escalation strategies, as well as biological treatment options such as pharmacologic agents and electroconvulsive therapy. We summarize the availab

The Role of Novel Small Molecule Drugs in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Treatment algorithms have traditionally been based on biological therapy when conventional therapy was not successful in controlling inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Novel small molecule drugs (SMDs) for IBD include the Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors Tofacitinib, Filgotinib and Upadactinib and the sphingosine-1 phosphate (S1P) inhibitors Ozanimod and Etrasimod. SMDs have advantages over biologics, such as oral administration, lack of immunogenicity, and rapid onset of action. All agents are effective in treating ulcerative colitis, while Upadactinib is the only SMD for Crohn's disease. There i
